The authors present and discuss connectionist models of cognitive maps which are based on local representation, versus models which are based on distributed representation, as well as connectionist models concerning language and spatial relations. As is well known, Gibson's (1979) ecological approach suggests a view on cognition which is diametrically different from the classical main stream view: perception (and thus cognition) is direct, immediate and needs no internal information processing, and is thus essentially an external process of interaction between an organism and its external environment. The chapter by Harry Heft introduces J. J. Gibson's ecological approach and its implication to the construction of cognitive maps in general and to the issue of wayfinding in particular. According to Heft, main stream cognitive sciences are essentially Cartesian in nature and have not as yet internalized the implications of Darwin's theory of evolution. Gibson, in his ecological approach, has tried to do exactly this. The author introduces the basic terminology of the ecological approach and relates its various notions, in particular optic flow, nested hierarchy and affordances, to navigation and the way routes and places in the environment are learned.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the quasi-experimental study was to determine whether Linguistic Cognitive Maps or Non-Linguistic Cognitive Maps better improve reading comprehension in fourth grade students. Fourth grade students from six classrooms in a small municipal school district in the Mississippi Delta participated in the study. Linguistic Cognitive Maps were added to traditional instruction in one school, Non-Linguistic Cognitive Maps were added to traditional instruction in another school, and one school was used as a control with no additional instruction added. Cognitive maps have been shown to aid students in constructing knowledge from text. However, a review of the literature failed to locate a study in which the effectiveness of one form of cognitive map over the other was compared. Data was analyzed by two three-way ANOVAs to investigate possible interactions between method, gender, and learning status of the students. No significant difference between the groups was found on the Star Reading gain scores. However, on the ThinkLink post-test only, a significant difference was found between the control group and the Linguistic Cognitive Map group. This difference was in the direction of the control group. No significant difference in ThinkLink posttest only scores were found between the two treatment groups. Several possible reasons emerged for these results, including last minute personnel changes, initial differences between the groups, classroom scheduling, and length of time of the study itself. Recommendations included increasing the length of time for the study, increasing the number of schools in the study, and additional training time for teachers and students.
