Book Read 180 Implementation

Download or read book Read 180 Implementation written by Robin L. Felty and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mixed methodological study examined the impact the READ 180 reading program has on increasing the percentage of minority and economically disadvantaged eighth grade students achieving proficiency in reading on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). The descriptive case study also investigated the program's effect on students' motivation to read. Participants in the study included seven eighth grade teachers who worked exclusively with eighth grade students in an alternative education school located in an urban school district in Pennsylvania. Quantitative and qualitative data collection provided information about READ 180's effect on increasing reading proficiency on the PSSA, and teachers' perceptions about the effectiveness of the program on improving reading proficiency and students' motivation to read. Quantitative reading data from 22 eighth grade students were obtained throughout the 2006-2007 school year from 4Sight Benchmark Reading Test 1, Test 3 and Test 5. Additional quantitative data were collected through administration of the PSSA Reading test. Qualitative data were gathered from seven teachers who completed the Teachers' READ 180 Perceptions Survey, a 20-item Likert scale instrument, and five teachers who participated in subsequent interviews and classroom observations. Findings of the study showed that READ 180 improved the reading proficiency of students on the PSSA. Baseline data from 4Sight Test 1 indicated that three students read at grade level with proficiency. Posttest data from the PSSA showed that 50% of the eighth grade students read with proficiency. Research findings from the survey responses revealed teachers' perceptions that the READ 180 program improved students' reading proficiency in specific ways. A high level of agreement occurred among participants' perceptions that READ 180 improved students' decoding skills, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Higher levels of agreement were seen in participants' perceptions that READ 180 increased students' motivation to read.

Book The Direct Effects of Principal student Discussions Upon Eighth Grade Students Gains in Reading Achievement An Experimental Study

Download or read book The Direct Effects of Principal student Discussions Upon Eighth Grade Students Gains in Reading Achievement An Experimental Study written by Jack P. Silva and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School effectiveness and instructional leadership research over the past thirty years have largely concluded that principal effects on student achievement are small and indirect; it has been assumed that principal effect is important, but mediated through other school factors. To the contrary, this experimental study found that one-on-one discussions between a principal and a non-proficient student that focused upon the student's 2008 reading score and a goal for their 2009 reading score had a direct and significant effect upon the student's subsequent reading achievement gains on a state reading test. Students in the experimental condition who held discussions with a principal prior to the state reading test showed reading gains significantly larger than students in the control condition who had their discussions after the state reading test. The randomly-assigned subjects of this study (20 in the experimental condition and 21 in the control condition) were 41 of the 66 eighth grade students who made up the entire non-proficient population of a large suburban middle school. Student achievement gain was calculated as the difference between the predicted versus actual reading percentile score as reported by the state's value-added system of assessment. The results of this study provide hope and potential benefit to principals who are challenged by the urgent leadership imperatives of No Child Left Behind and who seek the most immediate and direct ways to improve student achievement. Given this study's encouraging results, further investigations should be made into the principal-student discussion effect upon students of different genders, of different grade levels, and of different communities.

Book A Comparative Implementation of Two Independent Reading Programs for Eighth Grade Students

Download or read book A Comparative Implementation of Two Independent Reading Programs for Eighth Grade Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Research indicates that independent reading correlates highly with academic success and career achievements. The purpose of this action research project is to compare the effect of two reading programs on reading motivation and comprehension in eighth-grade classrooms. Data was collected on five eighth-grade classes using a reading motivation survey and two computerized comprehension measures. Results indicate a statistically significant increase in comprehension for the independent reading program which used comprehension strategies to assess reading, while the group that used the Accelerated Reader program decreased in comprehension. Motivation was not affected in either of the groups."--leaf 4.

Book Examining the Role of Treatment Adherence and Instructional Quality in the Context of a Content area Reading Instructional Treatment for Eighth Graders

Download or read book Examining the Role of Treatment Adherence and Instructional Quality in the Context of a Content area Reading Instructional Treatment for Eighth Graders written by Philip James Capin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatively few reading intervention studies have investigated treatment fidelity data and the extent to which fidelity is associated with student outcomes. This study extends the extant research by examining treatment adherence and quality and the extent to which these components of treatment fidelity relate to posttest performance for eighth grade students who received a content-area reading treatment targeting improved content knowledge and reading comprehension. Data were analyzed to address the following questions: (1) Do treatment adherence and quality indicate a general factor of fidelity? (2) Do treatment adherence and quality predict greater performance in content acquisition and reading comprehension? (3) To what extent are the effects of treatment adherence and quality on student outcomes moderated by teacher's classroom management performance and student characteristics (pretest reading performance level, limited English proficiency status, special education status, and gender)? Situated within a larger randomized controlled trial examining the effects of a content-area instructional program, this study used data from the subsample of students (n = 790) in classes randomly assigned to treatment. Results showed a general factor of fidelity did not sufficiently predict treatment adherence and quality. Treatment adherence and quality were significant, positive predictors of content knowledge performance, which indicates that increases in both dimensions of treatment fidelity were associated with improvements in content knowledge posttest performance. However, a significant interaction between treatment adherence and quality was present. Interaction plots revealed instructional quality led to greater levels of posttest performance for students in classrooms with high levels of instructional adherence; however, instructional quality was not strongly associated with posttest performance when instruction was implemented with low adherence. Results also showed instructional quality was a significant, positive predictor of performance on the ASK Reading Comprehension subtest. Moderator analyses revealed teachers' classroom management and students' pretest performance influenced the effects of treatment adherence and quality on student outcomes. These findings help to elucidate the conditions under which the PACT instructional treatment leads to improved outcomes and, more broadly, underscores the importance of examining dimensions of treatment fidelity and the interplay between treatment fidelity dimensions and other teacher- and student-level characteristics when interpreting treatment effects.
