Book Trained Peer Counselor Effect on the Personal Growth of Freshman Students at a Private Liberal Arts College

Download or read book Trained Peer Counselor Effect on the Personal Growth of Freshman Students at a Private Liberal Arts College written by JoAnn Willis and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary problem of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of trained peer counselors on the personal growth of freshman students at a small liberal arts college. An effort was also made to determine if training residence hall student assistants in counseling skills affected freshman perceptions of those assistants. A final concern of the investigation was to study the academic achievement of freshman students as related to the sex of the student and the availability of peer counseling. The sample for the study consisted of 140 randomly selected freshman men and women, living in residence halls at Northwest Nazarene College during the 1975-76 school year. Four groups were involved in the study: male experimental, female experimental, male control, and female control. The two experimental groups lived in residence hall wings where trained peer counselors were available. The two control groups lived in wings without peer counselors. The study encompassed a 25 week time period. The Omnibus Personality Inventory (OPI) was used as a measure of personal growth. The three hypotheses related to personal growth were tested using a two way, fixed model, analysis of covariance. The hypotheses concerned with academic achievement used a two way, fixed model, analysis of covariance, also. For this test the student's ability index, a z-score computed from the student's performance on several standardized mental ability tests, was used as the covarient to his second term cumulative grade point average. Ivy's Counselor Effectiveness Scale (CES) was used to measure freshman perceptions of their residence hall student assistants. The hypotheses regarding these perceptions were tested using analysis of variance. The mean scores of the CES were examined to determine what difference, if any, was perceived by the freshman students in those assistants who were trained in counseling skills and those who were not. Statistical significance was set at the .05confidence level for all hypotheses. Personal growth as measured by the OPI appears to be unaffected by peer counseling. However, a difference was evident between men and women on certain OPI scales. Men were found to be more scholarly, reflective, and critical in their thinking process while women reported themselves to be better adjusted emotionally and more caring of others. Although no difference was found in academic achievement between the experimental and control groups, there was a difference between men and women students. Freshman women achieved more highly than freshman men. The freshman ratings showed the trained peer counselors to be perceived more positively than their non-trained counterparts in both the total score of the CES and on certain subscores. The results of this study show that training of dormitory assistants does lead to a more positive perception of those assistants.

Book excerpt: A step-by-step model for training peer counselors forms the basis of this trainer's manual and for the accompanying exercises for trainees which are organized into two books for effective skill building. Chapter I of the trainer's manual contains an open letter to the trainer which lists requirements for being effective in training peer counselors. Chapter II looks at the concept of peer counseling and its components, chapter III examines the changing roles of counselors, and chapter IV presents research findings on peer counseling. Chapter V focuses on development of the trainer. Chapter VI discusses the setting up of a peer counseling program, chapter VII reviews the training model and procedures to follow, and chapter VIII presents the training program itself, which is divided into modules designed to cover all eight basic communication skills. Following this chapter are two sets of modules for the two books of activities for trainees, 13 modules for Book 1, The Introductory Program, and 11 modules for Book 2, Applying Peer Helper Skills. Chapter IX describes operationalizing peer counselors/helpers and advanced training, chapter X deals with program evaluation, chapter XI discusses peer counseling in action, and chapter XII provides guidelines for the paraprofessional in human services. Appendixes contain pre- and posttests on the positive values continuum, evaluation forms, other forms and application blanks, and rating sheets. Lists of references and additional readings are included. (NB)

Book Exploring the Effects of Personal Counseling on the Development of Counselors in Training

Download or read book Exploring the Effects of Personal Counseling on the Development of Counselors in Training written by Kathleen H. Driscoll and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Graduate students from all disciplines report stressful experiences related to academic workload, lack of a healthy work life balance, assistantship responsibilities, and finances (Fox, 2008; Mazzola et al., 2011; Oswalt & Riddock, 2007; Wyatt & Oswalt 2013). Specifically, counselors in training (CITs) experience a combination of graduate school academic rigor with the practice of sitting with clients and developing skills, knowledge, and counseling style. Becoming a counselor is emotionally demanding (Folkes-Skinner, 2016; Folkes-Skinner, Elliot, & Wheeler, 2010; Howard, Inman, & Altman, 2006; Orlinksy & Rønnestad, 2005; Skovholt & Rønnestad, 2003) and interpersonal and intrapersonal changes are elicited through training (Furr & Carroll, 2003). As self-exploration is emerging in training, perturbation of the self is also developing, occasioning developmental transitions that present unique challenges. It appears that CITs need support throughout their counselor development journey to buffer personal and psychological distress. Although there may be many such factors, including emotional, logistical, and financial support from family and friends, the support of other students in the program, and faculty who are sensitive to student struggles, personal counseling seems one approach to self-care and self-awareness that warrants attention. It seems possible that personal counseling may be an avenue for CITs that could facilitate increased self-awareness, healthy counselor development, and personal well-being. To date, research on personal counseling has been primarily a) international, b) with participants who were mandated to access counseling, and c) with participants who were from a range of interdisciplinary mental health training programs. Accordingly, little is known specifically about US-based CITs' experiences related to accessing personal counseling during their training program. That is, counselor education researchers have yet to uncover the breadth and depth of the lived experiences of US-based CITs who voluntarily access counseling services. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of CITs accessing personal counseling and how this impacts counselor development in specific regards to self-awareness, empathy development, self-reflection, tolerance for ambiguity, self-efficacy, and self-care. The following research questions were addressed through this study: (1) What are the experiences of CITs utilizing personal counseling during their training program? (2) How do CITs understand how their personal counseling experience has influenced their development as a professional counselor? Through qualitative interviews, the experiences of CITs and the impacts on counselor development were explored, as well as the positive and negative aspects of these experiences. In analyzing ten individual interviews with master's level CITs voluntary seeking counseling, five domains emerged that provide insight into the research questions. The domains include the following: (1) previous counseling experience, (2) motivation, (3) personal takeaways of going to counseling, (4) professional takeaways of going to counseling, and (5) other. Categories and subcategories emerged within these domains as well including the following: a) academic/professional encouragement, b) meaningful counseling experiences, c) family, social and cultural influences, d) logistical barriers, e) counselor relationship, f) learning from the counseling, g) positive impact on counselor development, and h) personal counseling is considered "best practice". Research results, study limitations, implications for counselor educators, counselor training, and CITs, and future research directions are discussed."--Abstract from author supplied metadata
