Book Flight Evaluation of a Stability Augmentation System for Light Airplanes

Download or read book Flight Evaluation of a Stability Augmentation System for Light Airplanes written by Franklin F. Eckhart and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a flight evaluation of a Stability Augmentation System (SAS) for light airplanes are reported and discussed. Twenty-six non-instrument rated private and commercial pilots, whose distribution by rating and flight hours was typical of those who are involved in IFR disorientation accidents, and five instrument rated commercial pilots were flown. Quantitative measures of the bank angle, airspeed, altitude and heading were recorded during a series of planned VFR and IFR tasks with the SAS ON and OFF. Qualitative data were obtained from the subject pilots by questionnaire and the recorded observations of the safety pilot. A statistical analysis was made of the differences in pilot performance during system ON and system OFF operation. It was shown that the stabilizing effects of SAS, although not sufficient in itself to prevent this type of accident, significantly improved the non-instrument rated pilot's ability to maintain control of the airplane during an inadvertent encounter with IFR conditions. Book Stability Control Augmentation System Evaluation

Download or read book Stability Control Augmentation System Evaluation written by Marvin Easter and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made to evaluate competency of pilots trained in aircraft having a stability augmentation system. This is to determine the necessity of issuing restricted certificates to private pilots if they are unable to pass the private flight check by manual operation of controls. This project was to train five students to required flight performance for a private pilot certificate in a Cherokee-140 equipped with the Mitchell AK-153 Stability Augmentation System. When the students reached private pilot proficiency, they were given three flight checks. The first with the system on, the second with it off, and the third in a different aircraft without the stability system. All students passed the checks without difficulty. The results of the project indicate that all students reached private pilot proficiency in an average time. The stability system had no particular effect on the students' control of the aircraft with or without visual references. Therefore, it would seem unnecessary to issue restricted pilot certificates. Book Flight Evaluation of a Pilot assist Stability Augmentation System for Light Aircraft

Download or read book Flight Evaluation of a Pilot assist Stability Augmentation System for Light Aircraft written by R. Walchi and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the utility of a light aircraft pilot-assist stability augmentation system in extricating the noninstrument qualified pilot from accidentally encountered instrument flight conditions. Ten noninstrument rated pilots flew a predetermined course consisting of visual flight and instrument flight conditions. The aircraft was equipped with the pilot-assist system and a conventional stability augmentation system. The utility of the pilot-assist system was established through comparisons of continuous photographic data recordings of the airspeed, heading, bank angle, altitude, and altitude rate indicators on the aircraft's instrument panel, and through comparisons of pilot opinionnaire and detailed questionnaire data obtained for flights with both systems. The analysis of these data for both the pilot-assist system and the conventional stability augmentation system demonstrated that the utility of the pilot-assist system exceeded that of the conventional system. This relative utility was demonstrated both in terms of improvements in pilot performance and potential pilot acceptance. (Author).

Book Control stability Augmentation System Evaluation

Download or read book Control stability Augmentation System Evaluation written by Warren G. Crook and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment was performed to investigate the proficiencies of student pilots trained to the required flight performance for a private pilot's certificate in airplanes incorporating a stability augmentation system. Two selected flight schools trained five subjects each. Upon reaching the required proficiency, each student was given three separate flight checks with and without the use of the stability systems and an additional check in a same class airplane not having a stability system. Results indicated pilot competence was not effected one way or another by training with such a system. All students met the required performance standards and were issued unlimited private pilots certificates. (Author).

Book Selection of Optimal Stability Augmentation System Parameters for a High Performance Aircraft Using Pitch Paper Pilot

Download or read book Selection of Optimal Stability Augmentation System Parameters for a High Performance Aircraft Using Pitch Paper Pilot written by Robert P. Denaro and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pitch paper pilot is a computer program which yields pilot parameters for a pitch tracking task and predicts the pilot rating of the aircraft handling qualities. Using Pitch Paper Pilot, optimal SAS gains are selected for the fixed form Stability Augmentation System of a high performance aircraft with structural bending. This aircraft was described in the Design Challenge to the 1970 Joint Automatic Control Conference. The final augmented aircraft responses compared favorably with desired normal acceleration response envelopes. The pilot model in Pitch Paper Pilot is modified in this study to include pilot lag and remnant which results in greater rating accuracy, although a few cases still show room for improvement.

Book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control

Download or read book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Book Flight Stability and Automatic Control

Download or read book Flight Stability and Automatic Control written by Robert C. Nelson and published by WCB/McGraw-Hill. This book was released on 1998 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Flight Stability and Automatic Control presents an organized introduction to the useful and relevant topics necessary for a flight stability and controls course. Not only is this text presented at the appropriate mathematical level, it also features standard terminology and nomenclature, along with expanded coverage of classical control theory, autopilot designs, and modern control theory. Through the use of extensive examples, problems, and historical notes, author Robert Nelson develops a concise and vital text for aircraft flight stability and control or flight dynamics courses.

Download or read book Stability Augumentation System for Light Aircraft Providing Pilot Assist and Turn written by Siegfried Knemeyer and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patent concerns a conventional stability augmentation system for automatically maintaining a wings level constant heading attitude. The system is provided with a switch on the control wheel which introduces an offset signal into the stability augmentation system causing the system to produce and stabilize on a turn rate determined by the magnitude of the offset signal.
