Book excerpt: Mozi (fifth century B.C.) was an important political and social thinker and formidable rival of the Confucianists. He advocated universal love--his most important doctrine according to which all humankind should be loved and treated as one's kinfolk--honoring and making use of worthy men in government, and identifying with one's superior as a means of establishing uniform moral standards. He also believed in the will of Heaven and in ghosts. He firmly opposed offensive warfare, extravagance--including indulgence in music and allied pleasures--elaborate funerals and mourning, fatalistic beliefs, and Confucianism.

Book excerpt: "Among all Chinese philosophers, he comes closest to the Christian teachings, for he alone taught universal love as the basis of society and of peace, and showed that Heaven loved the people equally... He enunciated the clearest teachings "against offensive wars," and even developed in great detail the technique of defensive warfare. He also developed a system of logical method... But what is more, Motse's teachings were a stern call to action... Mencius referred to him as one who "would wear his head and his heels off to benefit the world." He taught and practised altruism, frugality and the hard life... His influence grew so great that for two centuries after Confucius, the Mohists became the rivals of Confucianists... Why the Mohist School's influence suddenly stopped completely remains a matter of speculation." - Lin Yutang, 1942 Mo Tzŭ (4th century BC) was an influent sage of Ancient China, among other schools of thought, he made the greatest opposition to Taoism and Confucianism, the two main schools of thought at that time. Mohism's influence sudden fall brought some consequences to what we know of his work: many chapters are lost, thus, although we can read most of his work, we are not able to read his complete work. This edition of Y. P. Mei's translation bring us the following chapters: Befriending the Learned / Self-cultivation / On Dyeing / The seven causes of anxiety / Indulgence in Excess ] Exaltation of the Virtuous I / Exaltation of the Virtuous II / Exaltation of the Virtuous III / Identification with the Superior I / Identification with the Superior II / Identification with the Superior III / Universal Love I / Universal Love II / Universal Love III / Condemnation of Offensive War I / Condemnation of Offensive War II / Condemnation of Offensive War III / Economy of Expenditures I / Economy of Expenditures II / Simplicity in Funerals IIIWill of Heaven I / Will of Heaven II / Will of Heaven III / On Ghosts III / Condemnation of Music I / Anti-Fatalism I / Anti-Fatalism II / Anti-Fatalism III / Anti-Confucianism II / Geng Zhu / Esteem for Righteousness / Gong Meng / Lu's Question / Gong Shu

Book Basic Writings of Mo Tzu Hs n Tzu and Han Fei Tzu

Download or read book Basic Writings of Mo Tzu Hs n Tzu and Han Fei Tzu written by Di Mo and published by New York : Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1967 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mo Tzu, Hsün Tzu, and Han Fei Tzu were three of the most important philosophers in ancient China. This collection of their basic writings points to three very different positions within in the spectrum of Chinese thought and reveals the diversity of of the Chinese intellectual tradition. Presenting the principle doctrines of Mo Tzu (470391 B.C.) and his followers, early rivals of the Confucian school, this section includes writings on music, fatalism, Confucians, and "universal love"--the cornerstone of Mo-ist philosophy--Hsün Tzu (born ca. 312 B.C.) provided the dominant philosophical system of his day. Although basically Confucian, he differed with Mencius by asserting that the original nature of man is evil, and also expounded on such subjects as good government, military affairs, Heaven, and music. Representative of the Fachia, or Legalist, school of philosophy, the writings of Han Fei Tzu (280?233 B.C.) confront the issues of preserving and strengthening the state through strict laws of punishment and reward. His lessons remain timely as scholars continue to examine the nature and use of power.

Book Education in Traditional China

Download or read book Education in Traditional China written by Thomas H.C. Lee and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study in English on the social, institutional and intellectual aspects of traditional Chinese education. The book introduces the Confucian ideal of 'studying for one's own sake', but argues that various intellectual traditions combined to create China's educational legacy. The book studies the development of schools and the examination system, the interaction between state, society and education, and the vicissitudes of the private academies. It examines family education, life of intellectuals, and the conventions of intellectual discourse. It also discusses the formation of the tradition of classical learning, and presents the first detailed account of student movements in traditional China, with an extensive bibliography. While a general survey, this book includes various new ideas and inquiries. It concludes with a critical evaluation of China's rich educational experiences.

Book The Book of Master Mo

Download or read book The Book of Master Mo written by Mo Zi and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key work of ancient Chinese philosophy is brought back to life in Ian Johnston's compelling and definitive translation, new to Penguin Classics. Very little is known about Master Mo, or the school he founded. However, the book containing his philosphical ideas has survived centuries of neglect and is today recognised as a fundamental work of ancient Chinese philosophy. The book contains sections explaining the ten key doctrines of Mohism; lively dialogues between Master Mo and his followers; discussion of ancient warfare; and an extraordinary series of chapters that include the first examples of logic, dialectics and epistemology in Chinese philosophy. The ideas discussed in The Book of Master Mo - ethics, anti-imperalism, and a political hierarchy based on merit - remain as relevant as ever, and the work is vital to understanding ancient Chinese philosophy. Translator Ian Johnston has an MA in Latin, a PhD in Greek and a PhD in Chinese, and was Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Sydney University until his retirement. He has published translations of Galen's medical writings, early Chinese poetry (Singing of Scented Grass and Waiting for the Owl), and early Chinese philosophical works (the Mozi and - with Wang Ping - the Daxue and Zhongyong). In 2011 he was awarded the NSW Premier's Prize and the PEN medallion for translation. Unlike previous translations, this version includes the complete text. It also includes an introduction and explanatory end notes. 'A landmark endeavour' Asia Times 'A magnificent and valuable achievement' Journal of Chinese Studies 'Eminently readable and at the same time remarkably accurate...Johnston's work will be the standard for a long time' China Review International 'Compelling and engaging reading...while at the same time preserving the diction and rhetorical style of the original Chinese' New Zealand Journal of Asian Studies

Book The Mozi as an Evolving Text

Download or read book The Mozi as an Evolving Text written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozi (ca. 479-381), known as the first outspoken critic of Confucius, is an important but neglected figure in early Chinese philosophy. The book Mozi, named after master Mo, was compiled in the course of the fifth - third centuries BCE. The seven studies included in the The Mozi as an Evolving Text take a fresh look at the Core Chapters, Dialogues, and Opening Chapters of the book Mozi. Rather than presenting a unified vision of Mohist thought, the contributions search for different voices in the text and for evolutions or tensions between its chapters. By analysing the Mozi as an evolving text, these studies not only contribute to the rejuvenation of Mozi studies, but also to the methodology of studying ancient Chinese texts.

Book The Philosophy of Chinese Moral Education

Download or read book The Philosophy of Chinese Moral Education written by Zhuran You and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book depicts a unique historical and cultural phenomenon, the philosophy of Chinese moral education, in an attempt to capture the essence of Chinese culture. While tracing the historical journey of this philosophy, the book rearranges and interprets the conceptual frameworks concerning moral education in various Chinese philosophical schools and religions. In so doing, it summarizes the ideas of human relations, man and nature, cosmology, moral virtues, and educational approaches, posing intriguing questions about how they have influenced Chinese characteristics, social norms, and value orientations. In particular, the book brings up discussions on the culture of family and state, the challenges that the philosophy had encountered in early modern and present China, as well as the prospect of regeneration of the philosophy and its significance for our world today. This is the book to read if you want to have a deep understanding about China and its belief and educational system.
