Excerpt: ... chapter xvii Suggestions For Courses Of Study It does not seem possible to make a course of study, or courses of study, in manual arts and industries that would be equally valuable in different sections of the country, or even in different schools in the same locality. Certain lines of the work represented in the course should be related as intimately as possible to home and community life with which the pupils come in contact. As these conditions vary in different sections of the country, and in different communities, so must the course of study vary if the work is to be most interesting and educative. But, there are certain interests and activities that are more or less common in all communities. These will constitute a basis for a general suggestive outline which may be filled in and supplemented as necessary or desirable for local conditions. First, there are certain lines of early racial industrial activities that have historical as well as manual art values, and that appeal to the combined play and constructive impulses of children. In their proper time and place, and within common-sense limitations, these have educational value for all children, and hence should find a place in the course of study. For example, the making of simple textiles and pottery were among the early efforts of the man to utilize the materials of his environment. Rushes and coarse grasses were everywhere available for the simple mats, and clay could always be found for making the "coiled" bowls or pots. In either of these processes no tools were needed. They were genuine hand-made articles. To trace the discoveries and inventions in connection with the development of these and similar arts and industries, from their crude beginnings down to present day...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Arts for Vocational Ends The agitation of industrial education during the past few years has made all teachers of the manual arts in elementary and grammar grades, as well as in the high school, consider the question of the sufficiency of their subject and the efficiency of their teaching. If the manual arts were first introduced into the public schools for the purpose of making boys and girls more efficient, community workers and if, after twenty-five years of instruction in the manual arts, it is found that boys and. girls are still unable, when they leave school, to meet reasonable community demands, then something should be done to change this condition. Certainly the public schools should be held responsible for an education which will enable the youth of our land to perform a service upon leaving school immediately profitable both to themselves and to the community at large. If one is to receive a profitable return from a wage-earning occupation he must prepare particularly to do A what is required of those engaged in the occupation. A, vocational tendency, therefore, must obtain somewhere in the process of education. Inasmuch as the large majority of those at any time enrolled in the public schools must find a means of livelihood early in life, it is imperative that the public schools, even in the lower grades, offer an opportunity for vocational work. This demand is an effort to meet some of the fundamental educational needs of our school system and the social need for a larger number of intelligent trained workers for the industries. It has resulted in the teaching of a variety of the manual or mechanic arts and in the development of a number of systems of instruction. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training in the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is well, also, that we should be on our guard against a kind of pseudo manual training that is finding its way into the schools. As is always the case with new move ments, there is a good deal of experimenting with little knacks, which do nothing for either discipline or knowl edge. These are put forward by well-meaning persons as manual training, and great harm is done in this way in misleading the public and wasting the time and energies ofpupfls. Download or read book New Methods in Education written by J. Liberty Tadd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Methods in Education: Art; Real Manual Training; Nature Study This book is primarily a protest against present methods Of educa tion. The Old education is dependent too much upon books. Books are mere aids - they are not the original sources of education or infor mation, but artificial and second-hand ones. Nature and experience are the best teachers, and by immediate acquaintance with and direct exercise upon the myriad forms of life we get the best training. Chil dren are told too much; they do not work out truths for themselves. Reading, writing and arithmetic are made main facts instead Of inci dentals Of education. Some pupils become exceptionally proficient in these branches at the expense of essentialities. Mv endeavor will be. To show that much school work should and can be carried on to better advantage as regards pupils, teachers, economy and environment by the method here set forth than by the ordinary system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Copper Work: An Illustrated d104 Book for Teachers and Students in the Manual Arts During the past few years many experiments have been tried in the development of Manual Training Courses and much time has been spent in discussing of what lines of work they should consist. Wood and iron were the first materials used and are yet indispensable, but experience has led those who are developing this work to believe that there are other materials as well adapted to Manual Train ing work in all its various forms. Clay, used not only for modeling but for ceramic work as well, leather, brass, and copper are materials that have also been put to the test and found satisfactory in many ways. In ancient times copper was known as a useful metal, and down through the ages it not only held its own but increased in usefulness. Among its valuable properties may be mentioned toughness and ductility; its toughness enables it to be beaten into thin strong sheets, while its ductility enables it to be drawn out into fine wire. Copper readily forms important alloys, such as brass from copper and zinc. Work in sheet copper and brass has been introduced into the public school course with gratifying results. It has proved itself to be a valuable departure from other branches of Manual Training work and gives promise of being per manent. Sheet copper and brass offer possibilities for various kinds of treatment, either in the flat work which includes saw piercing, embossing and enameling, or in the raised work. There is something about this work that appeals to pupils and holds their interest. The nature of the material, hard enough to offer some resistance and yet pliable enough to allow its being wrought into many forms, the durability of the object when completed, and the variety of colors that may be obtained, especially with copper, all tend to make the subject not only interesting but fascinating. All exercises in sheet metal should be of some real value to the pupil; no time should be spent on work done simply for practice, but the various steps should be learned in the making of useful objects of artistic worth. In this, as in other work, it seems best to give each member of the class the same work for a while until he has become acquainted with the different tools and learned the limita tions of the material. When this has been accomplished, each pupil may be allowed to work out his own designs. In this the educational value is very greatly increased. The pupil conceives the idea and makes several sketches of it, carrying it through repeated changes until it is brought to the perfected design appropriate in every way to the idea. Some may not be fortunate enough to get a full equipment so that all of the various kinds of metal work may be done, but such may be able to make a beginning by doing light work in saw piercing, which requires a very limited equipment. Download or read book Manual Arts Public School Manual Arts an Agency for Vocational Education written by F. D. Crawshaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Arts Public School Manual Arts an Agency, for Vocational Education Some experiments which have been made in recent years to provide for better equipped industrial workers have seemed to indicate that little account has been taken of manual training in the public schools - this training to be so organized as to accomplish in part at least the desired results. Unquestionably the trade school, the special industrial school, and the continuation school are each and all a means to the desired end. It is a question, however, whether our present public school organization may not do much that it is not now doing to aid in the industrial education movement. Admitting, if we can, that the schools are not fulfilling their obligation to society in this respect, and that manual training teachers are shareholders with their brother teachers concerned in more purely academic subjects in helping to solve the problem of industrial education, what can they do to change their methods? The Present Facilities Already we have in public school manual arts departments from four to eight shops equipped for wood and metal work. We have drawing rooms to provide for three kinds of mechanical drawing and as many kinds of freehand drawing. We have science laboratories for practically all the sciences that are taught.
