Book The Education of Teachers Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Education of Teachers Classic Reprint written by W. H. Payne and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Teachers It may help the reader to interpret the doctrines embodied in the following essays if he has before him a brief synopsis of the writers opinions on the education of teachers. Every man who has patiently studied the problems of education has formed for himself, little by little, an educational creed, or confession of faith; and it is well on such an occasion as the writing of a book to throw into articulate form the articles of ones faith or belief as they relate to the field of thought traversed by writer and reader. Teaching is a spiritual art and classifies with music, poetry and oratory, rather than with the mechanic arts, the arts that deal with matter and its fixed and uniform relations. As teaching has to do with spirit, methods of teaching should not be fixed and invariable, but flexible and fluid, adapted to the modes and phases of variable spirit. In all intelligent and effective teaching, principles, rather than rules, should be held at a premium. Versatile teaching will draw its methods from prolific principles and will reflect the personality of the teacher who uses them. When methods become uniform, teaching becomes mechanical and wooden. Teachers should be educated rather than trained, education pointing to versatility and freedom, training to uniformity and mechanism. A teachers education should be of the liberal type. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the Music Teacher IT has been well said that many things reach the intellect that never reach the consciousness.' Thus, one may read the injunction Love thy neighbor as thyself; may give intellectual as sent to it as a wise and just line of conduct to pursue, and yet may never so thoroughly adopt it as to resolve it into a spontaneous impulse to action. Now the whole purpose of life clearly shows itself to be the up-building of the consciousness; the perception of facts by the intellect and their conscious acceptance by the inner self as working principles. Thus the individual is strengthened and his field of vision is enlarged. His purpose becomes specifically directed, and his work is more perfectly accomplished. The object of this book is to bring certain essential facts particularly before the teacher; 1 Sigurd Ibsen, Human Quintessence. Book Principles of Teaching Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Teaching Classic Reprint written by Nathan A. Harvey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Teaching Some men need to apologize for living, and the preface of a book is frequently in the nature of an apology for its existence. Whether a book needs an apology or not. it is sometimes advantageous to a reader to know the author's point of view, and what he expects the book to accomplish. Of the five hundred thousand teachers in the United States, about one hundred thousand are teaching their first term of school this year. Of this one hundred thousand, scarcely more than ten thousand have had any professional training, or have given to the subject of teaching any serious preliminary thought that could be called professional study. The professional aspect of the work must be presented to them after the work of teaching has been entered upon. In the hope that it may contribute somewhat to the realization that there is a professional aspect of teaching, and a body of educational doctrine worth while for a teacher to know, this volume is sent forth. The book has grown out of the attempt to give to young persons preparing to teach the largest amount of professional knowledge in the shortest possible time. This necessarily involves the selection of somewhat isolated topics, rather than a closely integrated body of educational doctrine. Book Twenty Talks to Teachers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twenty Talks to Teachers Classic Reprint written by Thomas E. Sanders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Talks to Teachers Twenty talks TO teachers is an epitome of some of the discussions used by the author in teachers' insti tutes. It is not a profound book. It was not intended to be. Its object is to call the attention of young teachers to some of the every day conditions and problems which they must solve for themselves. The average term of service of teachers is little'o'ver three years, hence the great mass of teachers are young in service. A number of these have expressed themselves as being pleased with the discussions in institutes, especially so because they were plain homely talks rather than learned discussions. Perhaps these and others may appreciate them as well in the printed form. No one is expected to agree with all that is said. If the topics are suggestive to young teachers, if the book helps them over a1few of the hard places, if it sets them thinking on some topics, if the advice that is given proves sound, and if it should encourage a few to deeper study, better preparation and broader reading, it will have done well. Trusting that it may form the basis of profitable discussions in teachers' institutes and meetings it is sub mitted to the great body of young teachers whose zeal, enthusiasm and optimism, has done so much in the past, is doing yet, and will continue to do so much for our schools and out of whose work must grow in the future a worthy profession of teaching. Book A Student s History of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Student s History of Education Classic Reprint written by Frank Pierrepont Graves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's History of Education There is a growing conviction among those engaged in training teachers that the History of Education must justify itself. It is believed that, if this subject is to con tribute to the professional equipment of the teacher, its material must be selected with reference to his specific needs. Antiquarian interests and encyclopaedic complete ness are alluring and may in their place prove praise Worthy and valuable, but they do not in themselves supply any definite demand in the training of teachers. The greatest services that the History of Education can perform for the teacher are to impel him to analyze his problems more completely and to throw light upon the school practices with which he is himself concerned. By presenting a series of clear-cut views of past conditions, often in marked contrast to his own, it should make him conscious that the present educational situation has to a large degree been traditionally received, and it should at the same time especially help him to understand the origin and significance of current practices. In this way a study of the History of Education will disrupt the teacher's complacent acceptance of the pres ent, and will enable him to reconstruct his ideas in the light of the peculiar conditions out of which the educa tion of his times has sprung. Whenever historical records do not assist in such an analysis and synthesis of present day problems, they may be frankly dismissed from dis cassion. This conception of the subject, I have myself. Book The Profession of Teaching Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Profession of Teaching Classic Reprint written by O. I. Woodley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Profession of Teaching The plan and purpose of this discussion of the profession of teaching, though simple and clear, treats the subject from a somewhat unusual point of view and hence requires a few words of explanation. Some time ago, in a discussion between a well-known attorney and an educator, the former emphatically asserted that there was no such thing as a profession of teaching, and that there could not be with the present American system of education. This statement, though backed by many strong arguments, did not shake the firm belief of the representative of that same educational system, that teaching is as truly a profession as any of those occupations that are indisputably classed as such. A desire to establish his conviction and to secure unquestionable proof of its correctness led to a general analysis of vocations with the particular object of discovering the nature and characteristics of a profession and of determining the requirements for becoming a worthy member of it. The first chapter of this book is the direct outgrowth of that study. A further study of the particular requirements which the profession of teaching makes upon those who wish to be teachers in a truly professional sense has resulted in the conclusions set forth in the succeeding chapters. It is evident that the demands which the larger idea of education makes upon the teacher cannot be met without a clear understanding on his part of these demands and the means to be employed in meeting them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching as a Business: Four Addresses My earliest ideas of art are connected with a picture in the advertising columns of the weekly newspaper. It represented two men: one lean and lank and decrepit, walking about to save funeral expenses, and labelled "Before taking"; the other blooming with full vigor of manhood, and labelled "After taking." Dr. Andrews has shown you the teacher "before taking"; I am to show you the other one. A careful compilation of the characteristics ascribed to the ideal teacher in previous addresses upon the subject shows that he must be affable, benignant, courteous, decorous, exact, fervent, genteel, humorous, immaculate, judicious, keen, lenient, modest, neat, orderly, prompt, quiet, robust, scholarly, tranquil, ubiquitous, vigilant, wary, 'xemplary, youthful, and zealous.
