Teaching is a spiritual art and classifies with music, poetry and oratory, rather than with the mechanic arts, the arts that deal with matter and its fixed and uniform relations. As teaching has to do with spirit, methods of teaching should not be fixed and invariable, but flexible and fluid, adapted to the modes and phases of variable spirit. In all intelligent and effective teaching, principles, rather than rules, should be held at a premium. Versatile teaching will draw its methods from prolific principles and will reflect the personality of the teacher who uses them. When methods become uniform, teaching becomes mechanical and wooden. Teachers should be educated rather than trained, education pointing to versatility and freedom, training to uniformity and mechanism. A teachers education should be of the liberal type. It is believed that, if this subject is to con tribute to the professional equipment of the teacher, its material must be selected with reference to his specific needs. Antiquarian interests and encyclopaedic complete ness are alluring and may in their place prove praise Worthy and valuable, but they do not in themselves supply any definite demand in the training of teachers. The greatest services that the History of Education can perform for the teacher are to impel him to analyze his problems more completely and to throw light upon the school practices with which he is himself concerned. By presenting a series of clear-cut views of past conditions, often in marked contrast to his own, it should make him conscious that the present educational situation has to a large degree been traditionally received, and it should at the same time especially help him to understand the origin and significance of current practices. In this way a study of the History of Education will disrupt the teacher's complacent acceptance of the pres ent, and will enable him to reconstruct his ideas in the light of the peculiar conditions out of which the educa tion of his times has sprung. Some time ago, in a discussion between a well-known attorney and an educator, the former emphatically asserted that there was no such thing as a profession of teaching, and that there could not be with the present American system of education. This statement, though backed by many strong arguments, did not shake the firm belief of the representative of that same educational system, that teaching is as truly a profession as any of those occupations that are indisputably classed as such. A desire to establish his conviction and to secure unquestionable proof of its correctness led to a general analysis of vocations with the particular object of discovering the nature and characteristics of a profession and of determining the requirements for becoming a worthy member of it. The first chapter of this book is the direct outgrowth of that study. A further study of the particular requirements which the profession of teaching makes upon those who wish to be teachers in a truly professional sense has resulted in the conclusions set forth in the succeeding chapters. It is evident that the demands which the larger idea of education makes upon the teacher cannot be met without a clear understanding on his part of these demands and the means to be employed in meeting them.
