This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Handicapped School Children in Michigan First, let us consider \the education of the partially sighted in cities large enough to have a special class before we take up the education of these pupils in the rural districts and in the smaller cities where there are not enough such children to form a special class. From the. Point of view of education, the partially sighted child is one whose vision, even after it has been corrected as far as possible by glasses, is so defective that he cannot read ordinary print at all or without injury to vision, yet is able to read large print. The classes that have. Been formed for such children in the public schools are commonly known as conservation of Vision classes or sight saving classes. The latter name is preferable. In selecting pupils for a sight saving class there evidently is little difficulty in finding the child whose vision is so defective that he cannot even with glasses read ordinary print. The problem is to discover those pupils who are able to read print of ordinary size; yet in so doing are straining their eyes. Half the pupils in the sight saving classes of Cleveland are myopes. Book The Education and Care of Physically Handicapped Children

Download or read book The Education and Care of Physically Handicapped Children written by Joseph J. Endres and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education and Care of Physically Handicapped Children: Services Authorized Through Children's Courts; Procedure; State Aid The. Laws enacted providing for the physical care, education and general welfare Of the thousands of physically handicapped children of the State are the culmination of years Of work on the part of many civic and social agencies and hundreds of interested citizens to guarantee to _every such child the best medical attention; a good general education and training for useful service. This task now becomes a public trust as well as a public responsibility. There is no group of children in the State more deserving of generous help and sympathetic treatment than the thousands burdened with severe physical handicaps. The Legislature has wisely placed the major responsibility for this work upon local public agencies. It has clearly recognized the need for local leadership and active local participation in developing an effective statewide program for physically handicapped children. TO the children's court judges throughout the State has been given the authority to issue orders providing for the physical care and education of physically handicapped children within their jurisdiction. This power has created an effective method for the development of a necessary statewide service for both rural and urban children afflicted with severe physical defects. It is important to stress the value Of such a service both from the standpoint Of local communities and the State, whereby the cost may be absorbed jointly by the county and State, whenever the parents are unable to bear the total or some portion of this expense. Download or read book Negotiating Disability written by Stephanie L. Kerschbaum and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disability is not always central to claims about diversity and inclusion in higher education, but should be. This collection reveals the pervasiveness of disability issues and considerations within many higher education populations and settings, from classrooms to physical environments to policy impacts on students, faculty, administrators, and staff. While disclosing one’s disability and identifying shared experiences can engender moments of solidarity, the situation is always complicated by the intersecting factors of race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class. With disability disclosure as a central point of departure, this collection of essays builds on scholarship that highlights the deeply rhetorical nature of disclosure and embodied movement, emphasizing disability disclosure as a complex calculus in which degrees of perceptibility are dependent on contexts, types of interactions that are unfolding, interlocutors’ long- and short-term goals, disabilities, and disability experiences, and many other contingencies.

Book Disability Studies and the Inclusive Classroom

Download or read book Disability Studies and the Inclusive Classroom written by Susan Baglieri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book’s mission is to integrate knowledge and practice from the fields of disability studies and special education. Parts I & II focus on the broad, foundational topics that comprise disability studies (culture, language, and history) and Parts III & IV move into practical topics (curriculum, co-teaching, collaboration, classroom organization, disability-specific teaching strategies, etc.) associated with inclusive education. This organization conforms to the belief that least restrictive environments (the goal of inclusive education) necessarily emerges from least restrictive attitudes (the goal of disability studies). Discussions throughout the book attempt to illustrate the intersection of theory and practice.

Book A History of Disability

Download or read book A History of Disability written by Henri-Jacques Stiker and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to attempt to provide a framework for analyzing disability through the ages, Henri-Jacques Stiker's now classic A History of Disability traces the history of western cultural responses to disability, from ancient times to the present. The sweep of the volume is broad; from a rereading and reinterpretation of the Oedipus myth to legislation regarding disability, Stiker proposes an analytical history that demonstrates how societies reveal themselves through their attitudes towards disability in unexpected ways. Through this history, Stiker examines a fundamental issue in contemporary Western discourse on disability: the cultural assumption that equality/sameness/similarity is always desired by those in society. He highlights the consequences of such a mindset, illustrating the intolerance of diversity and individualism that arises from placing such importance on equality. Working against this thinking, Stiker argues that difference is not only acceptable, but that it is desirable, and necessary. This new edition of the classic volume features a new foreword by David T. Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder that assesses the impact of Stiker’s history on Disability Studies and beyond, twenty years after the book’s translation into English. The book will be of interest to scholars of disability, historians, social scientists, cultural anthropologists, and those who are intrigued by the role that culture plays in the development of language and thought surrounding people with disabilities.
