Book The Education of a Statesman

Download or read book The Education of a Statesman written by John T. Shaw and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a dangerous time—the international system is teetering, jolted by a raging pandemic, climate change, income inequality, cyber threats, terrorism, authoritarian regimes, nationalist demagogues, and frightened and impatient publics. But the career and hard-earned wisdom of famed diplomat, Jan Eliasson, offers warnings, guidance, and hope. The Education of a Statesman examines Eliasson’s remarkable diplomatic career—including Swedish diplomat, president of the United Nations General Assembly, and Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations—and scrutinizes the innumerable lessons he has learned which are applicable to our current period of “maximum danger” in global affairs. Combining elements of idealism and realism, Eliasson helps us understand the substance, theater, and spirit of diplomacy--statecraft, stagecraft, and soulcraft on the world stage. His story provides insights on the complexities of this perilous time and suggests what can be done to renew the international order and calm the raging discontent that has infected international and domestic politics. Historian John Shaw analyzes this master diplomat and provides an insider’s perspective on diplomacy and international politics: what happens during backroom meetings, high-profile international conferences, and charged debates at the United Nations. This book shows what must be done to confront this pivotal moment so “the bad guys stop winning” and the forces of rationality, fairness, and pluralism prevail—or at least have a fighting chance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Statesman, Plato brings together--only to challenge and displace--his own crowning contributions to philosophical method, political theory, and drama. In his 1980 study, reprinted here, Mitchell Miller employs literary theory and conceptual analysis to expose the philosophical, political, and pedagogical conflict that is the underlying context of the dialogue, revealing that its chaotic variety of movements is actually a carefully harmonized act of realizing the mean. The original study left one question outstanding: what specifically, in the metaphysical order of things, motivated the nameless Visitor from Elea to abandon bifurcation for his consummating non-bifurcatory division of fifteen kinds at the end of the dialogue? Miller addressed in a separate essay, first published in 1999 and reprinted here. In it, he opens the horizon of interpretation to include the new metaphysics of the Parmenides, the Philebus, and the "e;unwritten teachings."e;

Book Mr Churchill s Profession

Download or read book Mr Churchill s Profession written by Peter Clarke and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1953, Winston Churchill received the Nobel Prize for Literature. In fact, Churchill was a professional writer before he was a politician, and published a stream of books and articles over the course of two intertwined careers. Now historian Peter Clarke traces the writing of the magisterial work that occupied Churchill for a quarter century, his four-volume History of the English-Speaking Peoples.As an author, Churchill faced woes familiar to many others; chronically short of funds, late on deadlines, scrambling to sell new projects or cajoling his publishers for more advance money. He signed a contract for the English-Speaking project in 1932, a time when his political career seemed over. The magnum opus was to be delivered in 1939, but in that year, history overtook history-writing. When the Nazis swept across Europe, Churchill was summoned from political exile to become Prime Minister. The English-Speaking Peoples would have to wait.The book would indeed be written and become a bestseller, after Churchill left public life. But even before he took office, the massive project was shaping his worldview, his speeches and his leadership. In these pages, Peter Clarke follows Churchill's monumental quest to chronicle the English-Speaking Peoples - a quest that helped to define the enduring 'special relationship' between Britain and America. In the process, Clarke gives us not just an untold chapter in literary history, but a fresh perspective on this iconic figure: a life of Churchill the author.

Book The Statesman

Download or read book The Statesman written by Henry Taylor and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-12-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Henry Taylor's classic treatise The Statesman, originally published in 1836, is the first modern book to be devoted to the subject of public administration. It has been read and studied by generations for its keen insights into the relationship between public administrators and elected officials in a democracy. It has also been appreciated for its wit. The present volume is the first twentieth-century edition to be based on the revised and expanded text that Taylor published in 1878 as part of his Collected Works. It is also the first edition to be fully annotated. The lengthy editors' introduction to this volume emphasizes the relevance of Taylor's thought to the fundamental issues of public administration in the contemporary United States. The editors demonstrate the superiority of Taylor's understanding of the relationship between politics and administration to the widely accepted model of that relation that derives from the thought of Woodrow Wilson. Above all, they argue, Taylor's insights merit our attention because they indicate how a properly organized civil service can be a locus of statesmanship in a democracy, fulfilling the intentions of the authors of the American Constitution in a contemporary context that differs significantly from what the Founders themselves anticipated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declaration of Statesmanship is a one-of-a-kind American Government high school course. It unites history, philosophy, and civics in a dynamic blend of narrative and argument. The authors of the course continually endeavor to match the thoughtfulness and elegance of the multiplicity of original sources and fundamental texts found in this course which were pivotal in the founding of the nation. The course has three primary parts. In the first, the text explores the ideals and principles of this nation as expressed in The Declaration of Independence. It examines the philosophy and religious teaching that influenced the founders in their decision to write the Declaration and leave Great Britain. Then the text considers the Declaration in detail and shows how The Articles of Confederation and The Constitution establish a government which fulfills the Declaration's ideals. The second part of the course investigates how some of our greatest statesman were guided by these same ideals when dealing with the difficult questions of slavery and civil rights. From even before the founding there was a conflict between the ideas of liberty and the existence of slavery. This part of the course reviews how the founding generation addressed the problem of slavery present in the new nation and how future statement have used those same ideals in their struggles. America needs great statesmen, but it has an even greater need, a need of people capable of living as free men. In the third part, the course uses Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America to analyzes the peculiarities of America which allowed this experiment in democracy to be so successful, and what is needed to maintain the freedom and self-rule which we have inherited. Declaration of Statesmanship has been designed as a one semester course in American Government for high school students. The program is made up of 4 different components which give students everything they need. Reading Book: The Reading Book contains the bulk of the original writings and documents which accompany the course. This course is the perfect tool to inform future generations of their rights, duties and responsibilities as American citizens living in the civic state that is the American Government.
