Book The ACP Group and the EU Development Partnership

Download or read book The ACP Group and the EU Development Partnership written by Annita Montoute and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes a systematic and critical assessment of the nature, evolution, and prospects of the development partnership between the 79-member African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) group of states and the 28-member European Union (EU). A core theme that runs through the work is that the ACP’s partnership with the EU remains an important framework for addressing development challenges in the African, Caribbean, and Pacific regions, but needs to adapt to changes in the global political economy, as well as internal developments in both the ACP and the EU, to sustain its relevance and effectiveness. This is crucial for the ACP group, in particular, given its origins in, and core focus on, development cooperation with Europe. The authors in this volume examine the history of the ACP-EU partnership since 1975; the EU’s relationship with the African, Caribbean, and Pacific regions individually; ACP experiences with economic partnership agreements with the EU; and new political issues, in particular, security, migration, and diasporas. Shedding light on the future prospects of this relationship, this book will be of interest to both scholars and policymakers working on the ACP-EU relationship and related development issues, including trade, aid, security, and migration.

Download or read book The European Union and the Developing Countries written by Olufemi Babarinde and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors from different backgrounds (including law, political science and economics) analyze the forces that gave rise to the new agreement as well as the negotiating process of the new agreement, and the negotiations that are taking place to produce the planned Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) that are to replace the existing non-reciprocal trade preferences that are incompatible with WTO law.

Book Beyond Market Access for Economic Development

Download or read book Beyond Market Access for Economic Development written by Gerrit Faber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-17 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economic Partnership Agreements between the European Union and the Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries have drastically restructured Europe’s trade architecture towards the third world. This volume examines the consequences of EPAs for development in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Starting from the observation that the establishment of free trade as such will substantially impact upon economic development, the different contributions focus on the potential contribution of non-traditional aspects of EPAs. More specifically, the authors analyze the role of Aid for Trade schemes, regulatory integration issues and broader foreign policy considerations. How can these non-market access aspects stimulate development in Africa, and how have they been addressed in the EPAs? In short, this brings us to the question whether the ‘light version EPAs’ as they currently stand are a missed chance or a blessing in disguise?

Book Did you say free trade

Download or read book Did you say free trade written by Jacques Berthelot and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The headlong rush of the European Union (EU) in Free Trade Agreements reaches the paroxysm of absurdity when it imposes them on West Africa, whose per capita GDP is 21 times lower than its own. This Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) would make West Africa lose 76% of its customs revenue on its imports from the EU and lead to a sharp rise in unemployment due to the loss of competitiveness of its companies including the informal sectors. The latter will be worsened by the premature signing, with support from the EU, of the Continental Free Trade Area by 13 of 16 West African States, all this based on a number of untruths from the European Commission, as identified in this book.

Book The Economic Partnership Agreements Between the EU and the ACP States

Download or read book The Economic Partnership Agreements Between the EU and the ACP States written by Konstantin Meier and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the deadlocks in the negotiations of Economic Partnership Agreements between the EU and the African ACP states in comparison to the successful conclusion of a comprehensive CARIFORUM-EU EPA. In order to approach the topic of deadlock in multinational negotiations, two theoretical concepts from Guy Olivier Faure and Amrita Narlikar are applied. After a detailed overview of the history and state of play in the EPA negotiations, the thesis presents an exploratory research using statistical data, extensive academic literature and personal interviews with negotiators involved and experts in this particular field. The research resulted in two major findings. Firstly, the availability of superior alternatives to the EPAs is deemed to impede an efficient continuation of the negotiations. Secondly, the lack of proper negotiations institutions in the African ACPs appears to be depriving the regions of an effective way to organize and reconcile differing interests. This hinders the formulation of a common agenda to present and defend against the EU in the EPA negotiations.

Book The European Union West Africa Economic Partnership Agreement

Download or read book The European Union West Africa Economic Partnership Agreement written by Bouët, Antoine and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent modifications, the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the European Union (EU) and West African (WA) countries is still being criticized for its potential detrimental effects on WA countries. This paper provides updated evidence on the impact of the EPA on these countries. A dynamic multicountry, multisector computable general equilibrium trade model with modeling of the dual-dual economy and with a consistent tariff aggregator is used to simulate a series of new scenarios that include updated information on the agreement. We also go beyond estimating macrolevel economic effects to analyze the impacts on poverty. The policy simulation results show that the implementation of the EPA between the EU and WA countries would have marginal but positive impacts on Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire and negative impacts on Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo. The impact on poverty indicators in Ghana and Nigeria would be marginal. From the perspective of WA countries, this study supports the view that recent EU concessions are not sufficient and that domestic fiscal reforms are needed in WA countries themselves.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries are facing several major sets of closely interlinked forces that are likely to have significant impacts on the development of their agriculture (including fisheries) sectors and their food security situations. The possible conclusion and outcome of both the negotiations for Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) under the Cotonou Agreement (with the European Union [EU]) and the World Trade Organization negotiations pose serious concerns on the future of their agricultural trade and development. This study provides an introduction to some of the most critical aspects of the agriculture and fisheries negotiations including feasible approaches and options for the ACP to ensure that their agricultural and fisheries sectors reap maximum and sustained benefits with a view towards enhancing their food security situation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurgence of regionalism is borne out of the current political logjams that have characterized the governance and operations of multilateral trading system over the past one decade and a half. Oloruntoba critically examines Euro-Nigeria relations within the context of the Economic Partnership Agreements in terms of the political and economic implications of the agreements on Nigeria’s non-oil exports sub-sectors. Set within one of the main objectives of the Economic Partnership Agreements, he also interrogates the prospects and challenges of regional integration in Africa under the regime of transnational accumulation, which the Economic Partnership Agreements represents.

Book From Particularity to Partnership

Download or read book From Particularity to Partnership written by Dennis Fischer (M.A.) and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the European Union (EU) and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States represents an important yet very distinct case in international relations: its origins were colonial arrangements at the inception of the European Community which were subsequently transformed into the largest framework of North-South development cooperation. External relations with ACP states were formalised in 1975 with the first of four successive Lomé conventions and the EU provided its developing partners with considerable amounts of financial assistance and non-reciprocal preferential market access. In 2000, this relationship experienced a significant readjustment with the Cotonou Partnership Agreement and the introduction of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs).The European Commission heralded this agreement as a new era in development cooperation and EPAs as development instruments per se. Despite the rhetoric emphasis on the partnership principle in development cooperation, introduced reforms are primarily dictated by the EU while neglecting the impact on ACP states, for which the EPA negotiations represent a good example. As a result, this special relationship has considerably cooled down, the implementation of EPAs had largely failed and the EU became the target of public critique. This thesis demonstrates that the particularity of this relationship was enabled but subsequently rationalised in the course of institutional developments of the EU and its progressive involvement in a changing international political economy. European politics have dominated this relationship from the early beginning onwards and never simply focussed on the development of ACP countries but on a number of self-centred interests and objectives. The goals involved in this relationship subsequently changed and were increasingly aligned with those pursued in multilateral development and trade relations. The EU is not a unitary and coherent external actor and the European Commission has become a driving force behind the implementation of neo-liberal reforms towards ACP states. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the Commission in the processes which had led to the Cotonou Agreement, the implementation of EPAs and the erosion of this partnership.
