Book The Economic Impacts of U S Recycled Fibre Content Legislation on the Canadian Newsprint Industry

Download or read book The Economic Impacts of U S Recycled Fibre Content Legislation on the Canadian Newsprint Industry written by Romain Jacques and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in 1989, various US states began to impose recycled-content requirements on newsprint used in newspapers in order to address a perceived landfill crisis. Since Canada exports a large proportion of its newsprint production to the United States, this has meant a significant shift in its major market for newsprint. In this report, the North American Pulp and Paper Model is used to analyze the regional impacts of mandatory newsprint recycled-content regulations on North American pulp and paper producers. The model is used to project industry and market developments given the actual capacity expansion decisions (new de-inking facilities) that have been taken. The long-term impact of the industry response is projected, and the model is also employed to compare the actual adoption rates of de-inking technology with those under a hypothetical situation where there is no legislation and the industry responds to market forces only.

Book Global Concerns for Forest Resource Utilization

Download or read book Global Concerns for Forest Resource Utilization written by Atsushi Yoshimoto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers presented at the international symposium on forest sector analysis held in Miyazaki, Japan, in 1998. It is structured with three themes: understanding global forest sector issues, discussing the contribution of modeling efforts to forest sector analysis, and discussing the role of Japanese forest policy in a global sense. The most important features are the case studies using various types of forest sector models. From a modeling perspective, changes in modeling efforts include more detail of spatial and multiple market levels, intergenerational welfare concerns, non-market valuation issues, and explicit treatment of the uncertainty inherent in both the policy process and in the biophysical systems. The reader of this book will benefit not only from presentation of forest utilization issues in different nations, but also from the interrelatedness of the theory and application of forest sector modeling.

Book Trends in the Structure of the North American Market for Softwood Lumber

Download or read book Trends in the Structure of the North American Market for Softwood Lumber written by Jérôme Catimel and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to develop and employ an economic supply-and-demand framework to examine, assess, and describe trends in softwood lumber price levels and regional market shares, and to provide some analysis of the underlying economic processes that resulted in the price, consumption, and market share trends which occurred through the 1970-early 1990s period. The analytical framework is used to isolate the effects of particular determinants on observed market indicators, and to evaluate how and why supply and demand have evolved. Subjects examined include real price trends in lumber and US consumption, Canadian exports to the US and the Canadian share of the US market, shifts in North American supply and demand curves with regard to such factors as technological change and competition for roundwood, and structural change in the softwood lumber market.

Book The Global Forest Products Model

Download or read book The Global Forest Products Model written by Joseph Buongiorno and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2003-02-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Forest Products Model (GFPM) book provides a complete introduction to this widely applied computer model. The GFPM is a dynamic economic equilibrium model that is used to predict production, consumption, trade, and prices of 14 major forest products in 180 interacting countries. The book thoroughly documents the methods, data, and computer software of the model, and demonstrates the model's usefulness in addressing international economic and environmental issues. The Global Forest Products Model is written by an international multi-disciplinary team and is ideal for graduate students and professionals in forestry, natural resource economics, and related fields. It explains trends in world forest industries in the simplest terms by explaining the economic theory underlying the model. It describes six applications of the GFPM, three of which were commissioned by the Food Agriculture of the United Nations, the USDA Forest Service, and New Zealand Research. The authors show how to apply the model to real issues such as the effects of the Asian economic crisis on the forest sector, the effects of eliminating tariffs on international trade and production, and the international effects of national environmental policies. They provide complete explanations on how to use the GFPM software, prepare the data, make the forecasts, and summarize the results with tables and graphs. Comprehensive, and rigorous description of the world forestry sector Written by an international multi-disciplinary team Thorough description of data and methods In-depth applications to modern economic and policy issues Detailed documentation of the computer software Suitable for students, researchers, and decision makers
