Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2005. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to and interpretation of the development of the Canadian economy since European settlement. The main contrast between the book’s view and previous interpretations of Canada’s economic past is that, instead of emphasizing the continuity of Canadian economic development (with staple exports playing the leading role), the focus is on the transition from the sparsely populated colonial economy of the early nineteenth century to the modern economy ranking among the seven largest market economies whose leaders now meet for economic summits.

Book excerpt: This paper examines the state of three emerging technology clusters in western Canada: biotechnology, information technology, and advanced materials/advanced manufacturing. The study process sought to clarify the structure of the economy and the role presently and potentially played by these three enabling technology clusters. The ultimate goal was to find better ways for industry to use technology opportunities to improve the economy and quality of life in western Canada, and to see how to engage both private and public sectors in concrete actions to create vibrant enabling technology clusters in the region. Challenges and opportunities facing the three clusters that currently drive the western economy (energy/mining, forest products, and agri-food) are also discussed.

Book Canadian Economic History

Download or read book Canadian Economic History written by W.T. Easterbrook and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1988-12-15 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through three centuries of development, the history of the Canadian economy reflects the shifting roles of natural resources, industrializations, and international trade. This volume, a standard in the field since its initial publication in 1958, presents a comprehensive account of these and other factors in the growth of the Canadian economy from the time of the earliest European expansion into the Americas. The authors consider economic organization both on the level of the national economy and on that of the individual business unit. Among the subjects examined are the growth of the fur, fishing, and timber trades; the impact of successive wars; money and banking; the development of railway and canal systems; the wheat economy; the growth of organized labour; and twentieth-century patterns of investment and trade. The focus throughout is on the role played by business organizations, large and small, working with government, in creating a national economy in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a history of protest politics has done so much to define western Canada and to place it outside the Canadian mainstream, the aspirations and frustrations that animated western discontent over the years have been replaced by a new reality: the West is in, and many of the levers of national economic and political power rest in western Canadian hands. The protest tradition has yielded a dynamic region that leads rather than reacts to national economic, social, and political change. The westward shift of the Canadian economy and demography is likely to be an enduring structural change that reflects and is reinforced by the transformation of the continental and global economies. At the same time, western Canada faces major challenges, including finding a place for a sustainable resource economy in a rapidly changing global environment, establishing a full and modern partnership with Aboriginal peoples, and creating urban environments that will attract and retain human capital. None of these challenges are unique to the West but they all play out with great force, and great immediacy, in western Canada.
