Book excerpt: The Southern Appalachian Mountains are a global hotspot for salamander biodiversity including many endemic species. These endemic montane salamanders have limited ranges and are vulnerable to anthropogenically induced habitat shifts. Plethodon amplus (the Blue Ridge Gray-Cheeked Salamander) is a North Carolina endemic salamander whose current published range is likely inaccurate due to data deficiencies. Plethodon amplus is visually indistinguishable from other Gray-Cheeked Salamanders which occupy adjacent mountain ranges, making it difficult to locate exact boundary lines between species. To re-delineate the range of P. amplus, I collected tissue samples from Gray-Cheeked Salamanders from sites surrounding and within the known range of P. amplus. I extracted DNA from each tissue sample then amplified and sequenced mt DNA using primers for three protein-coding regions. This study found evidence that current published boundary lines for two of the Gray-Cheeked Salamander species (P. amplus and P. meridianus) are larger than currently accepted. The results did not indicate clear species boundaries and suggested that there was likely genetic exchange between species in their past evolutionary history which led to mitochondrial capture. Future studies using next-generation sequencing techniques will be necessary to draw accurate boundary lines between species of Gray-Cheeked Salamander.

Book excerpt: Green salamanders (Aneides aeneus) seasonal activity patterns have not been well documented across their range. The species exhibits high site fidelity to crevices in sandstone and limestone rock outcroppings, however, it is unclear why they select these habitats. Two sites at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky were monitored from 1 June 2006 to 30 July 2007. Each site was throroughly searched and crevices used by green salamanders (19 crevices) marked as well as the three closest unused crevices (57 crevices). Crevice height off the ground, width, length, aspect and depth were determined for all used and unused crevices. During weekly visits to both study sites, crevice temperature and percent relative humidity were recorded. I found no significant difference between the temperature of used and unused crevices, however, the used crevices provided a high, stable percent relative humidity (approximately 92%) compared to unused crevices which had a lower, fluctuating humidity (approximately 60-85%). The physical characteristics of the used and unused crevices did not differ significantly. These results indicate green salamanders apparently use a crevice because it provides a consistently moist environment.
