Book New Eclectic Medical Practice Vol 1

Download or read book New Eclectic Medical Practice Vol 1 written by Herbert Tracy Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Eclectic Medical Practice, Vol. 1: Designed for Students and Practitioners The author is not aware that an urgent demand has existed for the publication of this book. Indeed, it was not prepared with the impression that the profession was in urgent need of it, or that it would prove a remarkable innovation in the medical world. Medical men will come and go and the world will move on, after these pages have passed into forgetfulness; and time will chroui cle a newer practice - doubtless a better one - when the years have marked the inevitable progress of events. The students of the California Medical College, to whom the author has been something of an authority on practice for the past sixteen years, have frequently importuned him to publish a work which would embody the substance of his lectures, that a text book for ready reference might be had. To satisfy this demand the present volume was begun several years ago. Other duties, however, have delayed the work, and the prospects of its completion at an early date were so poor that at the request of several mem bers of the Class of '99 a first volume has been published, the second to follow within the coming two years. Special pains have been taken in the preparation of the text to dwell on the description of disease, that there may be no need of frequent reference to allopathic works for points on etiology, pathology, symptoms, diagnosis and prognosis. At the same time, it has been the author's aim to render the book as complete as pos sible on that which has been the peculiar merit of Eclectic works on practice in the past, treatment. "A provincial appellation given to gullies or ravines that occasionally o&rry off ter." " In addition to all these causes, which would make a Montpelier sickly, there is a general neglect among the inhabitants in their cellars, yards, outhouses, etc. Can it be doubted that such causes are not amply sufficient to produce malignant fever in a climate where the temperature, for at least five months in the year, is as high as eighty of Fahrenheit--the average temperature of the whole year not below sixty-five--and the quantity of rain as much as fifty-five inches?" Speaking of the year 1819, Dr. Perlee says: " The winter and succeeding spring were mild, and no particular disease prevailed. The summer set in very warm. The month of June, though warm and rainy, still continued healthy. July was attended with an increase of temperature, and an extraordinary quantity of rain, --greater than had fallen in any one" month for nine preceding years. During the last four days of the former and first three of the ensuing month, there were tremendous torrents, occasioning extensive and destructive inundations of all the low grounds adjacent to the water-courses. At the subsidence of this flood, hundreds of acres along St. Catharine's creek were covered with sediment, from a few inches to several feet in depth, which, after it had been exposed to the sun, and the surface become dry, cracked open, and emitted most...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Eclectic Treatment of Disease, Vol. 1 of 2: Designed for the Many Students and Practitioners, Who Are Now Diligently Searching for Knowledge of the Most Direct Action of Drugs, as Applied to Specific Conditions of Disease In the arrangement of the different topics in this work, I have reserved the right to sacrifice a strictly scientific grouping m a few instances, to my idea of a practical ar rangement. To illustrate: I have grouped croupous pneu monia with lung diseases, and certain infectious intestinal diseases with diseases of the latter class, instead of group ing them solely with reference 'to their infectious origin. The group of exanthematous diseases includes only the major exanthemata, those of the more common acute fibrile type m which the exanthem is the conspicuous factor of the disease. Pityriasis is a chronic inflammation of the skin, attended with abundant furfuraceous desquamation. Its most frequent seat is the scalp, or parts covered with hair, and when the scales are removed, the part is seen to be slightly reddened in spots. Pityriasis capitis is most frequently seen in children, and is attended with but slight itching, and continued exfoliation of the epidermis. It is sometimes very persistent and intractable. In Pityriasis rubra, the disease appears in small red spots, which being aggregated form large patches, which are usually hard, butsometimes of a normal softness. These patches soon become covered with minute scabs, which are continually being thrown off and reproduced. Pityriasis versicolor appears in the same manner, but is distinguished by the variegated yellow discoloration of the cuticle. Diagnosis.--Pityriasis is usually recognized easily, as there is but little structural change of the skin, and continued and abundant furfuraceous desquamation. Treatment.--The treatment will be the same as psoriasis, Kiiich see. PSORIASIS. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Practice of Medicine In the curriculum of medical study, the department of the practice of medicine is most difficult. The reasons are two fold: First, it is instruction without such means of illustration as appeal to the senses - descriptions of phenomena, which the student has not witnessed, and which, not unfrequently, he is illy prepared to understand. Secondly, the impression that the practice of medicine is almost wholly empirical, stands in the way of that careful study of therapeutics based upon path ology, which gives a rational practice of medicine.
