Book The Eastland Chronicles

Download or read book The Eastland Chronicles written by Monica Brooks and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-02-12 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her fingers were like snakes. The tips of each finger darted here and there across the surface of the bright glass ball as if on their own accord. Josh watched her fingers move in strange fascination. He thought he would begin to see a pattern if he watched long enough, but one didn't seem to form. He still watched it transfixed, however. Occasionally, a finger would strike out on the other side of the ball before it got dragged back to where she was sitting. "Interesting. Very interesting," she whispered to herself.

Book The Eastland Water Spirits

Download or read book The Eastland Water Spirits written by Claude Walker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: July 24, 1915. Chicagos deadliest day, far worse than the Great Fire. The SS Eastland - a poorly-designed, overcrowded lake steamer - capsized without warning in the heart of downtown Chicago, killing 844 people preparing for a company picnic. The victims - mostly young immigrants who toiled long hours in Western Electrics Hawthorne Works - and the disaster itself were largely forgotten to the mists of time. But on the 100th anniversary of the tragedy, a quake strikes below Chicago, a purple flash emanates from a mystery hole in the Chicago River and an inexplicable hazmat event strikes a Chinatown diner. Thus begins Chicagos shocking reintroduction to the horror of July 24, 1915, and a commemoration of the victims. The Eastland Water Spirits is a parable about memories and stories which refuse to disappear. It explores our ancestors impact on each of us, like it or not. It celebrates our connectedness over time and space, using water and spirits to tell the tale.

Book Big Jim Eastland

Download or read book Big Jim Eastland written by J. Lee Annis Jr. and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2016-07-21 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades after the Second World War, Senator James O. Eastland (1904–1986) was one of the more intransigent leaders of the Deep South's resistance to what he called “the Second Reconstruction.” And yet he developed, late in his life, a very real friendship with state NAACP chair Aaron Henry. Big Jim Eastland provides the life story of this savvy, unpredictable powerhouse. From 1947 to 1978, Eastland wore that image of resistance proudly, even while recognizing from the beginning his was the losing side. Biographer J. Lee Annis Jr. chronicles such complexities extensively and also delves into many facets lesser known to the general public. Born in the Mississippi Delta as part of the elite planter class, Eastland was appointed to the US Senate in 1941 by Democratic Governor Paul B. Johnson Sr. Eastland ran for and won the Senate seat outright in 1942 and served in the Senate from 1943 until his retirement in 1978. A blunt man of few words but many contradictions, Eastland was an important player in Washington, from his initial stint in 1941 where he rapidly salvaged several key local projects from bungling intervention, to the 1970s when he shepherded the Supreme Court nominees of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford to Senate confirmation. Annis paints a full picture of the man, describing the objections Eastland raised to civil rights proposals and the eventual accommodations he needed to accept after the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Book The New Madrid Quake Chronicles

Download or read book The New Madrid Quake Chronicles written by Claude Walker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1811, a series of quakes rocked the area near New Madrid, Missouri, a settlement on the Mississippi River. Sparsely populated by French fur-traders, a dwindling number of Native Americans and newly-arrived European immigrants, the region rumbled for weeks. Rivers ran backwards. Gaseous crevasses in the earth gaped, swallowing people and buildings. While "The New Madrid Quake Chronicles" is a story of a natural calamity, it is also a parable about the imprint a disaster can leave on any family for generations. The reader meets survivors of the Great Quake from two great families headed by Shawnee leader Blue Turtle and German exile Blas Baur, whose descendents share special quake-sensing abilities. Their stories are lyrically told: mighty rivers meeting, mightier tectonic plates clashing. Historical fiction, family saga and military-political history with a touch of seismic sci-fi, "The New Madrid Quake Chronicles" is a cautionary tale. If an 1811-sized quake hit New Madrid today, an estimated 3,500 residents would die. It would leave 730,000 homeless and 2.6 million without power. Most bridges over the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers would fall. Experts agree that a big one will likely strike again in the New Madrid Seismic Zone; how prepared will we be?
