Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The East Coast of Florida: Its Climate, Soil and Products The western bank of the river consists of a series of forest covered hills forming what is called a high hammock. The soil is often made up of oyster shells with a layer of humus on top. This very fertile belt is seldom more than one-half a mile wide, and is succeeded by a lower belt that probabiy once was the bed of a river, but now, as a rule, bears yellow pines, while 1n some places savannas occur, shallow grass ponds containing a few inches of water during the rainy season, but dry most of the year. They are, however, too wet to produce trees. In the pine woods of this belt the soil is sandy, sometimes underlaid by a hard sandstone of a brown, iron rust color. Bushes of gallberries are growing among the pines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As, ' however, you had a right to expect that some subjects of importance to you should be acted upon, it is incumbent upon me to show that the failure to despatch them 'did not arise from any want of attention or negligence on my part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florida, Beauties of the East Coast St. Augustine - Soft winds odorous with the perfume of orange and mag nolia blossoms, golden sunshine from the bluest of skies, which seem to arch so near in the clear air; old Spanish coquina buildings, whose gray outlines are softened by the storms of 200 years; great Spanish mosque palaces, whose wondrously beauti ful architecture harmonizes with the shaded tints and antiquity of the place, help to make St. Augustine what it is, the most beautiful and attractive winter resort in America. Possessing all the natural loveliness of the Southern clime, it is rendered a thousand fold more charming by its romantic history and legends, its relics of by-gone centuries; its uniqueness in having those marvelous treasures of architectural beauty and magnificence, the Ponce de Leon, with its wealth of castellated turrets and towers, rare carvings and lovely grounds; the massive Cordova and beautiful Alcazar, with their lovely courts and fountains, none of which can be described or pictured with any approach to the reality. From any part of the town their dark red towers lend a charming color to the scene, and flame against the sky as a landmark for the mariner. Fort Marion, gray and frowning, speaks of Spanish wars' and Indian forays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Everglades of Florida My first public utterance concerning the Everglades of Florida was an address delivered in Miami, Fla., Feb. 26, 1908. At this meeting I gave it as my opinion the Ever glades would be drained, but the land would not be perma uently settled without the introduction and growth of some staple crop of a high commercial value, and suggested rice and sugar cane as the crops that would most likely be found best suited to the climate and soil. After having completed my investigation for the U. S. Department of Agriculture, in a report prepared by me June 25, 1909, I used the following language: It is believed by agriculturists and chemists who have studied the situation, and from evidence afforded by the demonstrations that have been made, that sugar cane can be grown successfully on these muck lands. The writer saw in numerous places, visited many patches of sugar cane, the stalks as large and heavy as those grown in Louisiana and thick enough on the ground to yield a big tonnage per acre. Book Piracy Off the Florida Coast and Elsewhere Classic Reprint

Download or read book Piracy Off the Florida Coast and Elsewhere Classic Reprint written by Samuel Abbott Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Piracy Off the Florida Coast and Elsewhere I have been led to make these introductory remarks on ao count of a manuscript recently given to the Library by Mrs. William B. Rogers, eldest daughter and sole surviving child of Mr. James Savage, who was for more than sixty years a member of this Society and for fourteen years its President. It consists of an extract from a letter written by her uncle William Savage to her father, dated at Havana, December 31, 1818, giving an account of the capture by pirates of the ship Emma Sophia, off the Florida coast, of which vessel he was supercargo. Since the receipt of the paper from Mrs. Rogers I have found in the Boston Daily Advertiser, February 3, 1819, a fuller version of the letter; and for that reason I here follow the copy as given in the newspaper. Anything that relates to Mr. Savage or his family will always be in order at these meetings. At the unveiling of his bust in this room, on April 12, 1906, Mr. Adams, the President, said that with the single exception of Mr. Winthrop no member of the Society since its beginning has left upon it so deep and individual an impression as Mr. Savage has. The account appears on the second page of the Advertiser, under the heading of Marine Journal, as follows.
