Download or read book The Teaching of History Classic Reprint written by Herbert B. Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History The beginning and the end of historical evolution are the most interesting things to study and teach. A former presi dent of this Association, Henry Adams, once said: There is no history left for Americans to write except that of the North American Indians and the twentieth century. Although somewhat satirical, this remark implies a certain truth. All history begins with savagery and ends, like the story of the Jews and of the Christian Church, in prophetic ideals - in visions of things to come. Book The Teaching of History in Schools

Download or read book The Teaching of History in Schools written by Joseph Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Schools: A Lecture Delivered at the University Extension Meeting in Oxford, August 6th, 1892 This lecture was received with the greatest kindness by the audience which listened to it at the Oxford Summer meet ing last month, and its publication was urged on me by two friends, whose names, did I quote them, would carry weight with teachers. I am conscious, however, that I must my self bear the responsibility for rushing into print my only excuse is that I have a most genuine interest in my subject. I have not attempted to rewrite my paper, as to do so would not -increase its real value, and might lessen the welcome which I hope it may receive from those who heard it delivered. It is therefore somewhat rhetorical in tone (and at times also colloquial), as it was written to be heard rather than read. Book Thomas Jefferson s Image of New England

Download or read book Thomas Jefferson s Image of New England written by Arthur Scherr and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writers often depict Thomas Jefferson as a narrow-minded defender of states' rights and Virginia's interests, despite his authorship of the Declaration of Independence and vigorous defense of the young republic's sovereignty. Some historians claim he was particularly hostile to the New England states, whose Federalist electorate he regarded as enemies of his Democratic-Republican Party. This study of Jefferson's lifelong relationship with New England reveals him to be a consistent nationalist and friend of the region, from his first visit to Boston in 1784 to his recruiting of Massachusetts scholars to teach at the University of Virginia. His nationalist point of view is most evident where some historians claim to see it least: in his opinions of the people and politics of New England. He admired New Englanders' Revolutionary patriotism, especially that of his friend John Adams, and considered their direct democracy and town-meeting traditions a model for the rest of the Union.
