Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Relations Between Maryland and Virginia England until 1638, six years after the charter of Maryland was granted to Cecilius Calvert. Meanwhile, in every act of resistance to the Proprietary of Maryland, Claiborne was backed by the strongest expressions of encouragement and approval from the King and from the Council of Virginia. A few years later the relations between the two colonies were further complicated by the expulsion of a large number of Puritans from Virginia and their settlement in Maryland. During the Protectorate, when the hand of Lord Baltimore was powerless, these Puritans quarreled with the Catholics and a state of civil war for some time prevailed. Claiborne was in no way responsible for this state of affairs, and although he was one Of the commissioners appointed by Parliament for the reduction of the colonies to the authority Of the Common wealth Of England, he seems to have had very little to do with Maryland at this period. Book excerpt: "This book narrates 60 years in the history of Virginia as a British colony, from Charles I's coronation in 1625 through the monarch's displacement and the rule of the Commonwealth of England (from 1652 to 1660), on through the restoration of the throne to Charles II and his death in 1685. Turbulent politics in England during these years meant turbulence in the colony as well, as colonists faced the challenges of both daily life and changing politics. The book chronicles not only legislative actions, but also relations with Indians, Spaniards and the neighboring colony of Maryland; agriculture and tobacco; trade; religion; and more. The text draws frequently from many sources, providing for the reader excerpts from personal letters and public documents, wills and inventories, ship passenger lists, servants' indenture contracts, court records, lists of public officials and other records. Official proclamations from England, as well as legislative papers of the colony's home government, are included"--Back cover
