Download or read book William Parsons 3rd Earl of Rosse written by R. Charles Mollan and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a revealing account of the family life and achievements of the Third Earl of Rosse, a hereditary peer and resident landlord at Birr Castle, County Offaly, in nineteenth-century Ireland, before, during and after the devastating famine of the 1840s. He was a remarkable engineer, who built enormous telescopes in the cloudy middle of Ireland. The book gives details, in an attractive non-technical style which requires no previous scientific knowledge, of his engineering initiatives and the astronomical results, but also reveals much more about the man and his contributions – locally in the town and county around Birr, in political and other functions in an Ireland administered by the Protestant Ascendancy, in the development and activities of the Royal Society, of which he was President from 1848–54, and the British Association for the Advancement of Science. The Countess of Rosse, who receives full acknowledgement in the book, was a woman of many talents, among which was her pioneering work in photography, and the book includes reproductions of her artistic exposures, and many other attractive illustrations.

Written in an attractive informal style for the hypothetical 'educated layman' who does not need to have studied science. Well received in Irish and international reviews.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Woodville, queen to Edward IV and mother of the Princes in the Tower. Elizabeth of York, daughter of Elizabeth Woodville and the first Tudor queen of England. Elizabeth Grey, granddaughter of Elizabeth Woodville and Countess of Kildare, whose life both in England and across the Irish sea was closely entwined with the Tudor Court. This is the tale of three generations of women, linked by their name, Elizabeth, and by their family relationship. The story begins in the reign of the great Plantagenet Kings with the life of Elizabeth Woodville and ends in the reign of perhaps England’s most famous dynasty, that of the Tudor kings and queens. Through the life of Elizabeth of York, the first Tudor queen and Elizabeth Grey, cousin to Henry VIII and Mary Tudor, we explore the Tudor court and its dealings with the Earls of Kildare. From the birth of our first Elizabeth to the death of our last, these three women lived through wars and coronations, births and deaths, celebration and tragedy and between them they experienced some of the most exciting and troubled times in English history. Mother, daughter and granddaughter: individually they each have their own fascinating story to tell; together their combined stories take us on a journey through a century of English life.

Download or read book The Early History of the Town of Birr Or Parsonstown written by Thomas Lalor Cooke and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of the Town of Birr, or Parsonstown: With the Particulars of Remarkable Events There in More Recent Times, Also the Towns of Nenagh, Roscrea, Banagher, Tullamore, Philipstown, Frankford, Shinrone, Kinnetty and Ballyboy and the Ancient Septs, Princes, and Celebrated Places of the Surrounding It is with diffidence I introduce this work to the public. The people of Birr and the neighbourhood are aware that neither my father, the late Thomas Lalor Cooke, by whom the materials were collected, nor I, who arranged and put these materials in their present form, could devote much of our time to such an occupation. In consequence of this, and my father's long illness and death, there has been delay in the publication; and it cannot be expected that even now this book could be as perfect in style and finish as if it were the production of an experienced author, whose entire time was passed in literary pursuits. If deficient in some respects, it is hoped, however, the following pages will be found truthful, and to contain nothing of importance for which there is not an authority.
