Book The Early English Baptists 1603 1649

Download or read book The Early English Baptists 1603 1649 written by Stephen I. Wright and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the orthodoxy that seventeenth-century Baptists were divided from the first into two separate denominations, 'Particular' and 'General', defined by their differing attitudes to predestination and the atonement, showing how the position was in fact much more complicated. It describes how from the foundation of the 'Generals' in 1609 there were always two tendencies, one clericalist and pacifist, influenced by the Dutch Mennonites, and one reflecting the English traditions of erastianism and local lay predominance in religion. It re-analyses the confessional struggle during and after the civil war, showing how Independent and erastian sentiment in Parliament increasingly combined to baulk Presbyterian ambition; during and partly because of this process (which they also influenced), the Baptists evolved into three recognisable tendencies. Amongst General Baptists there was a politically radical current, but also a more passive tendency which was starting to gain ground. In 1647-9 most but by no means all Particular Baptist leaders were hostile to the Levellers. The book looks at the nature of religious conviction in the New Model Army, reassessing the role and influence of Baptists in it. In the late 40s, many Baptists, soldiers and civilians, rejected formal ordinances altogether. STEPHEN WRIGHT received his Ph.D. from the University of London. He has been visiting lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire and the University of North London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptists are not often thought of as leading theologians and practitioners of worship. But forgotten in history is one crucial fact: the Baptist tradition formed out of a desire to worship God purely. Early Baptists devoted immense energy to questions of worship and drew conclusions of even contemporary value. Through the seismic liturgical shifts of English society in the seventeenth century, worship was both their most galvanizing and disintegrating impulse. As time passed and terminology changed and Baptists shied away from this divisive topic, this emphasis was lost. No one today considers worship a Baptist distinctive. Pure Worship re-creates the fascinating historical context of the early years of the English Baptists. Examining many thousands of manuscript pages, Matthew Ward pieces together an entire theology of worship that not only guided the early Baptists but also attracted the attention of many elements of English Christianity. Baptist thoughts on worship were neither minor nor tangential but the very heart of what distinguished them from the rest of England. Pure Worship offers a complete reenvisioning of what it meant to be an early Baptist and reveals their overwhelming desire to be known as pure worshippers of God.

Book The Life and Writings of Thomas Helwys

Download or read book The Life and Writings of Thomas Helwys written by Thomas Helwys and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the earliest Baptist voices and martyr for his faith, Thomas Helwys was the first permanent Baptist and founder of the first Baptist church in England. He is best known for his seminal work on religious liberty, ""A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity"". Helwys' other extant writings include full length theological treatises, personal letters and the first known ""English Baptist Confession of Faith"". These works demonstrate his theological shift from English Separatism to recognizable Baptist tenets. His body of work clearly espouses religious liberty, priesthood of all believers, soul competency, a reverence for the bible, and the autonomy of the local church. In ""Thomas Helwys: Life and Writings"", Joe Early has provided the reader with a concise theological biography of Helwys and a compilation of all his extant writings. It is the first time that all of Thomas Helwys' writings have been available in one volume.

Book The Early English Baptists Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Early English Baptists Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by B. Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early English Baptists, Vol. 1 The first attempt at a history of the denomination was made by Thomas Crosby. He was a deacon of the church in Goat Street, over which the excellent Benjamin Stinton presided, and kept a school in Southwark. His work is in four volumes, and is now somewhat scarce. Materials for a similar work had been collected by his pastor. These he placed in the hands of the celebrated historian of the Puritans. The unfair use, scarcely, indeed, the use at all, of the information by Mr. Neal, induced the author to write and issue his work. There is much valuable informa tion of men and events, of one of the darkest and most humiliating periods of our national history, con tained in this work. Crosby was probably conversant with some of the sufferers. His intimacy with the leading ministers in the metropolis was close. Keach and others had ministered to the church with which he was officially connected. From men, competent to speak, he has told us much which, otherwise, would have been lost. To the future historian this writer's work will always be of value. Next in this field of denominational literature appeared Mr. A. Taylor. His work is in two volumes, and was issued more than half a century ago. It is avowedly a History of the English General Baptists. It contains a mass of important information in refer ence to this increasing section of the body, especially of the New Connexion, formed principally by the late Dan Taylor. Many of Mr. Taylor's conclusions will be found more than vindicated, by the documents which will appear in this and the subsequent volume. Book A History of the Baptists Volumes I and II

Download or read book A History of the Baptists Volumes I and II written by John T. Christian and published by Solid Christian Books. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In attempting to write a history of the Baptists no one is more aware of the embarrassments surrounding the subject than the author. These embarrassments arise from many sources. We are far removed from many of the circumstances under survey; the representations of the Baptists were often made by enemies who did not scruple, when such a course suited their purpose, to blacken character; and hence the testimony from such sources must be received with discrimination and much allowance made for many statements; in some instances vigilant and sustained attempts were made to destroy every document relating to these people; the material that remains is scattered through many libraries and archives, in many lands and not always readily accessible; often, on account of persecutions, the Baptists were far more interested in hiding than they were in giving an account of themselves or their whereabouts; they were scattered through many countries, in city and cave, as they could find a place of concealment; and frequently they were called by different names by their enemies, which is confusing. Yet it is a right royal history they have. It is well worth the telling and the preserving.
