Book excerpt: In this epic historical drama in verse form, Thomas Hardy brings the same level of realism and gritty detail to a poetic retelling of the Napoleonic Wars that he honed in novels such as Far From the Madding Crowd and Jude the Obscure. Hardy himself considered The Dynasts to be his masterpiece, and though critical response was initially lukewarm, modern-day readers and critics have come to appreciate the vast scope and literary innovation of this ambitious work.

Book Thomas Hardy

Download or read book Thomas Hardy written by Claire Tomalin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-01-18 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A masterful portrait" (The Philadelphia Inquirer) from a Whitbread Award-winning biographer, and author of A Life of My Own. The novels of Thomas Hardy have a permanent place on every booklover's shelf, yet little is known about the interior life of the man who wrote them. A believer and an unbeliever, a socialist and a snob, an unhappy husband and a desolate widower, Hardy challenged the sexual and religious conventions of his time in his novels and then abandoned fiction to reestablish himself as a great twentieth-century lyric poet. In this acclaimed new biography, Claire Tomalin, one of today's preeminent literary biographers, investigates this beloved writer and reveals a figure as rich and complex as his tremendous legacy.

Book Thomas Hardy The Dynasts Part Third

Download or read book Thomas Hardy The Dynasts Part Third written by Thomas Hardy and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many giants of Literature originate from the shores of these emerald isles; Shakespeare, Dickens, Chaucer, The Brontes and Austen to which most people would willingly add the name Thomas Hardy. Far From The Madding Crowd', ' Tess Of The D'Urbervilles', 'The Mayor Of Casterbridge' are but three of his literary masterpieces. In fact, Hardy himself thought he was a poet who wrote novels purely for the money. Indeed his poems were not published until he was in his fifties after his major novels were published and his reputation set. His novels of course continue to influence and mentor our thoughts. Each is a journey through a mind that creates characters, landscapes and narratives that reveal themselves in rich and textured detail as few other writers are able to do.

This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Hardy, OM (1840 - 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth. Charles Dickens was another important influence. Like Dickens, he was highly critical of much in Victorian society, though Hardy focused more on a declining rural society. While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially, therefore, he gained fame as the author of novels, including Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). Hardy's poetry, though prolific, was not as well received during his lifetime. It was rediscovered in the 1950s, when Hardy's poetry had a significant influence on the Movement poets of the 1950s and 1960s, including Philip Larkin. Most of his fictional works - initially published as serials in magazines - were set in the semi-fictional region of Wessex. They explored tragic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances. Hardy's Wessex is based on the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom and eventually came to include the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon, Hampshire and much of Berkshire, in southwest and south central England.
