Book The World s Future Crisis Extractive Resources Depletion

Download or read book The World s Future Crisis Extractive Resources Depletion written by Shahla Seifi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses mainly on strategic decision making at a global level, which is rarely considered in approaches to sustainability. This book makes a unique contribution as the work looks at global consequences of mineral exhaustion and steps that can be taken to alleviate the impending problems. This book highlights how sustainability has become one of the most important issues for businesses, governments and society at large. This book explores the topic of sustainability as one that is under much debate as to what it actually is and how it can be achieved, but it is completely evident that the resources of the planet are fixed in quantity, and once used, cannot be reused except through being reused in one form or another. This is particularly true of the mineral resources of the planet. These are finite in quantity, and once fully extracted, extra quantities are no longer available for future use. This book argues and presents evidence that the remaining mineral resources are diminishing significantly and heading towards exhaustion. Once mined and consumed, they are no longer available for future use other than what can be recycled and reused. This book demonstrates that future scarcity means that best use must be made of what exists, as sustainability depends upon this, and best use is defined as utility rather than economic value, which must be considered at a global level rather than a national level. Moreover, sustainability depends upon both availability in the present and in the future, so the use of resources requires attention to the future as well as to the present. This book investigates the alternative methods of achieving the global distribution of these mineral resources and proposes an optimum solution. This book adds to the discourse through the understanding of the importance of the depletion and finiteness of raw materials and their use for the present and the future, in order to achieve and maintain sustainability.

Book The Best of Times The Worst of Times

Download or read book The Best of Times The Worst of Times written by Paul Behrens and published by Black Spot Books. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique, highly readable approach to the environmental crisis, with alternating chapters outlining the effects on society if left unchecked, and the radical actions we can take to prevent it Now includes updated sections on COVID-19 and COP26 The environmental emergency is the greatest threat we face. Preventing it will require an unprecedented political and social response. And yet, there is still hope. Academic, physicist, environmental expert and award-winning science communicator Paul Behrens presents a radical analysis of a civilization on the brink of catastrophe. Setting out the pressing existential threats we face, he writes, in alternating chapters, of what the future could look like at its most pessimistic and hopeful. In lucid prose, Behrens argues that structural problems need structural solutions, and examines critical areas in which political will is required, including women's education, food and energy security, biodiversity and economics. The book was printed with two different jackets, to illustrate the unique duality of the author's approach.

Book excerpt: Structure is a central theme of construction, of interest to both engineers and architects; this book on architectural structures aims to facilitate the dialogue between these two professions. The chapters are organized into a progressive, step-by-step analysis of increasing complexity - a structural path - stressing an intuitive approach and conveying with diagrams and simple equations the requirements behind the dimensioning of all types of structures employed in construction. This approach is particularly useful for students, providing them with an intuitive understanding of form and function, as well as the insight to make their designs more sensible, coherent and elegant. "The art of structures" has been written for architects, civil engineers and construction professionals, and for all those need to acquire an intuitive and practical approach to the design and appropriate dimensioning of load bearing structures.
