Book excerpt: The visual system receives a series of fluctuating light patterns on the retina, yet visual perception is strikingly different from this unorganized and ambiguous input. Thus visual processes must organize the input into coherent units, or objects, and segregate them from others. These processes, collectively called perceptual organization, are fundamental to our ability to perceive and interact with objects in the world. Nevertheless, they are not yet understood, perhaps because serial, hierarchical assumptions that were long held impeded progress. In a series of experiments, this dissertation investigated the mechanisms that contribute to perceptual organization and ultimately to our ability to perceive objects. A new hypothesis is that during the course of object assignment potential objects on either side of a border are accessed on a fast pass of processing and engage in inhibitory competition for object status; the winner is perceived as the object and the loser is suppressed, leading that region to be seen as part of the shapeless background. Previous research suggested that at least shape level representations are accessed on the fast pass of processing before object assignment. In the first series of experiments (Chapter 1), we found that meaning (semantics) is also accessed on the fast pass of processing for regions that are ultimately perceived as shapeless grounds. This finding contradicts traditional feed-forward theories of perception that assumed that meaning is accessed only for figures after object assignment. The experiments in Chapter 2 examine activity in the alpha band of the EEG, which has been used as an index of inhibition. More alpha activity was observed when participants viewed stimuli designed such that there was more competition for figural status from the region ultimately perceived as the ground. The results support the proposal that inhibitory competition occurs during the course of object perception, and these results are the first online measure of competition during figure assignment. The final series of experiments (Chapter 3) investigated how quickly saccadic behaviors that required perceptual organization can be initiated. The experiments show that participants can initiate saccades that are based on perceptual organization approximately 200 ms after stimulus onset, much faster than was assumed on feed-forward models of perception. Collectively, these experiment support models of object perception that involve the mutual interaction and competition of objects properties via feedforward and iterative feedback processing, and the eventual suppression of the losing ground regions before object assignment.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, perceptual organization had been synonymous with Gestalt psychology, and Gestalt psychology had fallen into disrepute. In the heyday of Behaviorism, the few cognitive psychologists of the time pursued Gestalt phenomena. But in 1981, Cognitive Psychology was married to Information Processing. (Some would say that it was a marriage of convenience.) After the wedding, Cognitive Psychology had come to look like a theoretically wrinkled Behaviorism; very few of the mainstream topics of Cognitive Psychology made explicit contact with Gestalt phenomena. In the background, Cognition's first love – Gestalt – was pining to regain favor. The cognitive psychologists' desire for a phenomenological and intellectual interaction with Gestalt psychology did not manifest itself in their publications, but it did surface often enough at the Psychonomic Society meeting in 1976 for them to remark upon it in one of their conversations. This book, then, is the product of the editors’ curiosity about the status of ideas at the time, first proposed by Gestalt psychologists. For two days in November 1977, they held an exhilarating symposium that was attended by some 20 people, not all of whom are represented in this volume. At the end of our symposium it was agreed that they would try, in contributions to this volume, to convey the speculative and metatheoretical ground of their research in addition to the solid data and carefully wrought theories that are the figure of their research.

The most recent (3rd) edition of the handbook was published in 2004, and it was a success by any measure. But the field of experimental psychology has changed in dramatic ways since then. Throughout the first 3 editions of the handbook, the changes in the field were mainly quantitative in nature. That is, the size and scope of the field grew steadily from 1951 to 2004, a trend that was reflected in the growing size of the handbook itself: the 1-volume first edition (1951) was succeeded by a 2-volume second edition (1988) and then by a 4-volume third edition (2004). Since 2004, however, this still-growing field has also changed qualitatively in the sense that, in virtually every subdomain of experimental psychology, theories of the mind have evolved into theories of the brain. Research methods in experimental psychology have changed accordingly and now include not only venerable EEG recordings (long a staple of research in psycholinguistics) but also MEG, fMRI, TMS, and single-unit recording. The trend towards neuroscience is an absolutely dramatic, worldwide phenomenon that is unlikely to ever be reversed. Thus, the era of purely behavioral experimental psychology is already long gone, even though not everyone has noticed. Experimental psychology and "cognitive neuroscience" (an umbrella term that includes behavioral neuroscience, social neuroscience and developmental neuroscience) are now inextricably intertwined. Nearly every major psychology department in the country has added cognitive neuroscientists to its ranks in recent years, and that trend is still growing. A viable handbook of experimental psychology should reflect the new reality on the ground. There is no handbook in existence today that combines basic experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience, this despite the fact that the two fields are interrelated – and even interdependent – because they are concerned with the same issues (e.g., memory, perception, language, development, etc.). Almost all neuroscience-oriented research takes as its starting point what has been learned using behavioral methods in experimental psychology. In addition, nowadays, psychological theories increasingly take into account what has been learned about the brain (e.g., psychological models increasingly need to be neurologically plausible). Book excerpt: Perception consists of the brain's single best interpretation of the sensory world at a given moment in time. Multiple channels of visual input - be they from the two eyes or from the many parallel visual pathways that originate as early as the retina - must be reconciled to arrive at a unified percept. The fact that this must occur in roughly real time as the visual scene changes poses special challenges and constraints. I investigated two classes of visual processes relevant for the perception of time-varying visual stimuli: prediction, with a probable neural substrate in early visual cortical areas, and parallel processing in the magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) pathways. In Chapters 2 and 3, I asked how prediction and parallel pathways, respectively, contribute to perceptual selection using dynamic binocular rivalry stimuli. In binocular rivalry, incompatible images presented to the two eyes result in just one of the images being selected for awareness at any given time. This bistability makes rivalry a useful tool for the study of perceptual selection. In Chapter 2, we found that predictive context in the form of an unambiguous rotating grating biased perceptual selection during subsequent rivalry towards the expected next grating in the rotation sequence, compared to an orthogonal grating. This provided evidence that a prediction-like process influences perceptual selection during rivalry between gratings, which other work has shown is likely resolved at early stages of visual processing. In Chapter 3, we studied spatial, temporal, luminance, and chromatic factors influencing perceptual selection during interocular switch rivalry. In this type of rivalry, flickering orthogonal gratings are periodically exchanged between the two eyes, resulting in either the perception of a fast, regular alternation between orthogonally oriented gratings (similar to the display presented to a single eye) or a slow, irregular alternation, a percept that requires integration across the two eyes over time. We found that stimuli biased toward the M pathway increased the prevalence of fast, regular alternations, while stimuli biased toward the P pathway increased the prevalence of slow, irregular alternations. This finding suggested that the M and P pathways can make distinct contributions to perception during binocular rivalry and led us to propose a new framework for understanding perceptual selection during interocular switch rivalry. Physiological measurement of activity in the M and P pathways can lead to greater understanding of how these pathways contribute to perceptual experience, but methods for measuring functional signals from the M and P pathways of humans have been lacking. Therefore, in Chapter 4, we developed a procedure for functionally mapping the M and P subdivisions of human LGN, the site where these pathways are most clearly segregated, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We observed a gradient of more M-like to more P-like responses across the LGN. Importantly, this gradient had a spatial layout consistent with known LGN anatomical organization. This new method for localizing the M and P subdivisions of the LGN provides a way forward for investigating the function of these pathways in human visual perception, in both healthy and clinical populations. In summary, prediction and parallel processing are two classes of mechanisms that contribute to perception of dynamic visual stimuli. Here we have shown how such mechanisms operating at low levels of the visual system can help resolve competition between percepts, thereby affecting the contents of visual awareness. In addition, we developed a method for the physiological study of the M and P LGN subdivisions in the human brain, which is a promising technique for the future investigation of the roles of the M and P pathways in human visual perception, among other applications.

In order to make sense of the world around us we need to organize the information that our sensory systems receive. One of the most fundamental steps in this organizational process lies in the construction of objects. By breaking down our sensory input into objects the mind provides a basis upon which it can begin to scaffold our understanding of the world. This thesis therefore explores the basic stages at which the visual system organizes our sensory input into distinct objects. It explores these stages by exploiting the fact that the brain?s limited processing resources can be selectively allocated on the basis of?object-hood?. This allocation of processing resources, or attention, on the basis of these early stages of segmentation is commonly referred to as?object based attention?.?Object based attention? and perceptual organisation are explored in three sections in this thesis: Understanding the Phenomenon of Object Based Attention. The first three chapters of this thesis seeks to further our understanding of the phenomenon of?object based attention?, for example, chapter 3 explores whether the visual system can simultaneously parse several objects as potential units of attention, or whether it can only segment one or two objects at a time. Object Based Attention, a Tool to Explore the Nature of Perceptual Organisation The second section of this thesis attempts to use the phenomenon of?object based attention? as a tool to explore the nature of perceptual representations, for example chapter 5 tests whether different modalities (in particular vision and touch) are able to directly share information about objects in order to build up an integrated model of the external world. In the final section of this thesis the nature of perceptual organization is explored in a patient with a very specific form of brain damage that enables us to ask what areas of the brain are critically required for different aspects of perceptual organization.
