The country has recently been upgraded from a low-income country (LIC) to a lower-middle-income country (LMIC) as per the World Bank’s classification system. By 2024, the country also aspires to graduate from the United Nation’s list of least developed countries (LDC). The 7th five-year plan sets an ambitious target of 8 percent growth in GDP by 2020. There are also steep development targets to be achieved under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. All these will require an enormous leap forward from the current level of economic growth rate and sustaining it in the future. The situation also calls for considerable structural change in the economy, facilitating large-scale economic diversification. Rapid expansion of labor-intensive and high-productivity sectors, both in the farm and nonfarm sectors, is thus crucial for Bangladesh. Further, this should take place in conjunction with interventions to enhance productivity, jobs and incomes in traditional and informal activities where there are large pools of surplus labor. Given its relevance for Bangladesh and applicability to many other developing countries, the book offers a unique and pioneering resource for researchers, industry watchers as well as policy makers.

In reality, however, such movements are much burdened with political and social problems in the labour origin economies as well as the labour destination economies, and yet many of these problems remain not just unaddressed by the relevant governments but not even well studied. The present volume seeks to fill this gap by offering synthesis papers stemming from the studies on international labour migration in twenty Asia-Pacific economies which were discussed at a joint PECC-ABAC conference held in Seoul, Korea, on 25-26 March 2008, organized by KOPEC. These papers examine the demographic transition, the associated pattern of international labour migration, the national policies associated with it as well as their implications for business and the issues they raise, and, finally, the implications of these analyses for cooperation among the APEC governments, for each of the four subregions in the Asia-Pacific, as well as for the whole region.

Book excerpt: One feature of this book is the clarification of the development mechanism of Asia as a regional economy for over half a century, based on an "Asian Economy Within the Global Economy" approach that goes beyond the single-country analytical framework. The development of emerging economies has caught the world's attention: from the Newly Industrializing Countries or Newly Industrializing Economies of the 1980s to the BRICs entering this century. General economics cannot clarify the internal mechanism of the changing of newly industrialized economies led by Asia. This book clarifies such regional development structure by focusing on the direct investments of multinational firms and the importance of gradual changes of specific policies adopted by newly industrialized economies. Moreover, the book concretely deals with the US–China trade war and China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a problem of Asian economies. In so doing, the book not only perceives the structural change of the global economy as a structural change from a US-centric global economy of the twentieth century to a China-centric one, but also focuses on the birthing of a new growth frontier in the world economy, under a crisis brought about by a war for hegemony between the US and China. The investment initiative through China's BRI has prompted the investment competition between Japan and the US, which has made even stronger the possibility of giving birth to a new economic frontier in Afro-Eurasia. Another feature is the consideration of various issues that confront Asian countries in their search for economic development, using the Philippines as a case study. The analysis of the study points to the importance of a “shared growth” perspective, which is based on an Asian development model, and discusses the challenge of overcoming the issues of the economic development model within the region. At the same time, this book studies the significance and new issues, as a region, of the economy and overseas policies of attention-drawer China.
