Book The Dynamics of Aerocolloidal Systems

Download or read book The Dynamics of Aerocolloidal Systems written by G. M. Hidy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamics of Aerocolloidal Systems, Volume 1 is concerned with the dynamical behavior of idealized aerosol particles in the light of developments in classical mechanics. The idealization is based on the assumption that the solid or liquid particles suspended in a gas can be modeled as macroscopically smooth, chemically inert, spherical bodies. Topics covered include transport processes, single particles, and generation and behavior of clouds. Emphasis is placed on fluid dynamics from the continuum regime to the free molecule regime. This book is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with an overview of definitions and classifications of aerocolloidal suspensions. The next chapter deals with the characteristics of aerial dispersions as provided for in the hard, smooth sphere picture. The basic mechanical parameters of an aerocolloidal system is described, along with certain different regimes of the idealized aerosol and various solutions of the Boltzmann equation. The reader is methodically introduced to the dynamics of single particles in the continuum approximation; heat and mass transfer to single particles in a continuum; formation of aerosols by nucleation of supersaturated vapor; and diffusion and dispersion of aerosol particles. The final chapter considers the interaction between aerosol particles, paying particular attention to the collision of inert spheres whose sticking probability is unity. This volume will be useful to scholars, practicing scientists, and graduate students as well as those who would consider teaching aerosol mechanics as part of a curriculum in the atmospheric sciences, or in other applied sciences including applied physical chemistry, and engineering.

Book Colloidal Dispersions

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Bailey Russel
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN : 9780521426008
  • Pages : 548 pages

Download or read book Colloidal Dispersions written by William Bailey Russel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the physical side of colloidal science from the individual forces acting between particles smaller than a micrometer that are suspended in a liquid, through the resulting equilibrium and dynamic properties. A variety of internal forces both attractive and repulsive act in conjunction with Brownian motion and the balance between them all decides the phase behaviour. On top of this various external fields, such as gravity or electromagnetic fields, diffusion and non-Newtonian rheology produce complex effects, each of which is of important scientific and technological interest. The authors aim to impart a sound, quantitative understanding based on fundamental theory and experiments with well-characterised model systems. This broad grasp of the fundamentals lends insight and helps to develop the intuitive sense needed to isolate essential features of the technological problems and design critical experiments. The main prerequisites for understanding the book are basic fluid mechanics, statistical mechanics and electromagnetism, though self contained reviews of each subject are provided at appropriate points. Some facility with differential equations is also necessary. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter, making the work suitable as a textbook for graduate courses in chemical engineering or applied mathematics. It will also be useful as a reference for individuals in academia or industry undertaking research in colloid science.

Book Computational Techniques for Multiphase Flows

Download or read book Computational Techniques for Multiphase Flows written by Guan Heng Yeoh and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2019-02-27 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Techniques for Multiphase Flows, Second Edition, provides the latest research and theories covering the most popular multiphase flows The book begins with an overview of the state-of-the-art techniques for multiple numerical methods in handling multiphase flow, compares them, and finally highlights their strengths and weaknesses. In addition, it covers more straightforward, conventional theories and governing equations in early chapters, moving on to the more modern and complex computational models and tools later in the book. It is therefore accessible to those who may be new to the subject while also featuring topics of interest to the more experienced researcher. Mixed or multiphase flows of solid/liquid or solid/gas are commonly found in many industrial fields, and their behavior is complex and difficult to predict in many cases. The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged as a powerful tool for understanding fluid mechanics in multiphase reactors, which are widely used in the chemical, petroleum, mining, food, automotive, energy, aerospace and pharmaceutical industries. This revised edition is an ideal reference for scientists, MSc students and chemical and mechanical engineers in these areas. Includes updated chapters in addition to a brand-new section on granular flows. Features novel solution methods for multiphase flow, along with recent case studies. Explains how and when to use the featured technique and how to interpret the results and apply them to improving applications.
