Book excerpt: foreword by Hermann Haken For the past twenty years Scott Kelso's research has focused on extending the physical concepts of self- organization and the mathematical tools of nonlinear dynamics to understand how human beings (and human brains) perceive, intend, learn, control, and coordinate complex behaviors. In this book Kelso proposes a new, general framework within which to connect brain, mind, and behavior.Kelso's prescription for mental life breaks dramatically with the classical computational approach that is still the operative framework for many newer psychological and neurophysiological studies. His core thesis is that the creation and evolution of patterned behavior at all levels--from neurons to mind--is governed by the generic processes of self-organization. Both human brain and behavior are shown to exhibit features of pattern-forming dynamical systems, including multistability, abrupt phase transitions, crises, and intermittency. Dynamic Patterns brings together different aspects of this approach to the study of human behavior, using simple experimental examples and illustrations to convey essential concepts, strategies, and methods, with a minimum of mathematics. Kelso begins with a general account of dynamic pattern formation. He then takes up behavior, focusing initially on identifying pattern-forming instabilities in human sensorimotor coordination. Moving back and forth between theory and experiment, he establishes the notion that the same pattern-forming mechanisms apply regardless of the component parts involved (parts of the body, parts of the nervous system, parts of society) and the medium through which the parts are coupled. Finally, employing the latest techniques to observe spatiotemporal patterns of brain activity, Kelso shows that the human brain is fundamentally a pattern forming dynamical system, poised on the brink of instability. Self-organization thus underlies the cooperative action of neurons that produces human behavior in all its forms.
Download or read book The Dynamic Self in Psychoanalysis written by Rosa Spagnolo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-27 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamic Self in Psychoanalysis builds a bridge between two different but intertwined disciplines—psychoanalysis and neuroscience—by examining the Self and its dynamics at the psychological and neuronal level. Rosa Spagnolo and Georg Northoff seek continuity in the relationship between psychoanalysis and neuroscience, emphasizing how both inform psychotherapy and psychoanalytic treatment and exploring the transformations of the Self that occur during this work. Each chapter presents clinical examples which demonstrate the evolution of the spatiotemporal and affective dimensions of the Self in a variety of psychopathologies. Spagnolo and Northoff analyze the possible use of new neuroscientific findings to improve clinical treatment in psychodynamic therapy and present a spatio-temporal approach that has significant implications for the practice of psychotherapy and for future research. The Dynamic Self in Psychoanalysis will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, neuroscientists and neuropsychiatrists.
Download or read book The Self Society Dynamic written by Judith A. Howard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociologists generally study macrolevel institutions and social processes with little reference to the individual. Psychologists, on the other hand, tend to study individual-level processes with little reference to society. This volume, featuring contributions from influential scholars in US social psychology, brings the link between the individual and society into focus. The chapters in the volume are distinguished by their concentration on either cognitive, affective or behavioural processes. These analyses eschew the traditional psychological approach to individual-level processes and instead offer intriguing accounts of how thought, emotion and action are embedded in social context and are central to the dynamic between self and society. Together, the 14 chapters present a synthesis of theory and research that are a major force in stimulating and influencing investigations of the link between the individual and the larger society.

This book was released on with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing Change: Transform Your Anxious and Avoidant Attachment into Dynamic Self-Growth is a work born out of both professional insight and personal experience. My name is Talen James Laurent, and I’ve spent years working as a therapist, helping individuals navigate the complex terrain of human relationships. Throughout my career, I’ve seen first-hand the profound impact that attachment styles have on our lives—how they shape the way we connect with others, how they influence our self-worth, and how they can either hinder or foster our personal growth. But this book isn’t just the product of clinical observations; it’s also deeply personal. Like many of you, I’ve struggled with my own attachment patterns. There were times in my life when my relationships felt like battles—battles against my fears, against the urge to withdraw, and against the desire for constant reassurance. I’ve lived the experience of feeling trapped by these patterns, yearning for something more but unsure how to break free. It was through my own journey of self-discovery, therapy, and personal development that I began to see attachment issues not as flaws to be fixed, but as opportunities for transformation. I realized that the very challenges that made relationships difficult could also be the key to unlocking deeper self-awareness, emotional resilience, and a more fulfilling life. This realization became the foundation for Embracing Change. The purpose of this book is to shift the narrative around attachment. Too often, discussions about attachment styles focus on the idea of 'recovery'—on simply moving away from the pain and dysfunction caused by anxious or avoidant patterns. While recovery is undoubtedly important, I believe it’s only the beginning. The real potential of understanding and working with your attachment style lies in what comes next: the transformation and growth that can occur when you harness these challenges as catalysts for personal development. In Embracing Change, you will find a blend of the latest research in neuroscience, practical psychological exercises, and the wisdom gained from both my professional practice and personal experiences. My goal is to provide you with the tools you need to turn your attachment struggles into stepping stones for growth. Whether you identify with an anxious, avoidant, or even a disorganized attachment style, this book is designed to help you transform those patterns into strengths that will enhance your relationships and your life. This book is also a call to action. I invite you to approach your journey with curiosity, self-compassion, and a willingness to embrace the discomfort that often accompanies change. Personal growth is not a linear process, nor is it always easy, but it is deeply rewarding. As you work through the exercises and insights in this book, I encourage you to take your time, reflect on your experiences, and be patient with yourself. Remember that every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory. Embracing Change is more than just a guide—it’s a companion for your journey. It’s here to support you as you navigate the complexities of your attachment style, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical strategies to help you build the secure, fulfilling relationships you deserve. I wrote this book because I believe that everyone has the potential to transform their attachment style and, in doing so, transform their life. I hope that the insights and tools within these pages inspire you to embrace change, harness your challenges, and embark on a path of dynamic self-growth. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey. With gratitude and optimism, Talen James Laurent

Download or read book The Dynamic Perspective in Personality and Social Psychology written by Robin R. Vallacher and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed the ascendance of a new way to conceptualize and investigate the nature of dynamism at different levels of psychological reality. Areas of inquiry as diverse as cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, organizational behavior, and political sociology are being reframed in terms that allow rigorous and precise insight into basic dynamic processes. There are signs that this new approach to dynamics is emerging as a potentially integrative paradigm for personality and social psychology as well. This special issue highlights this new paradigm and illustrates its relevance to a broad spectrum of topics in personality and social psychology.

Download or read book Relating God and the Self written by Jan-Olav Henriksen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is not only about understanding the world - it is just as much about how to develop and shape the self’s experience of itself. Because the religious self is shaped by our symbols of God - and symbols of God are also shaped by the self, theology and philosophy of religion cannot ignore this interplay, or the psychological dimension, when they discuss what symbols of God are adequate and not. By discussing critically different ways the symbol of God functions in the formation of the self, the book develops a nuanced and original approach to the interplay between God and the self. It suggests that play is actually an important metaphor in order to develop a dynamic understanding of religion’s way of relating God and the Self. This approach challenges understandings of religion focussing only its cognitive claims, as well as those who emphasize doctrinal orthodoxy as the most important element in religion.
Download or read book Attracted to Conflict Dynamic Foundations of Destructive Social Relations written by Robin R. Vallacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict is inherent in virtually every aspect of human relations, from sport to parliamentary democracy, from fashion in the arts to paradigmatic challenges in the sciences, and from economic activity to intimate relationships. Yet, it can become among the most serious social problems humans face when it loses its constructive features and becomes protracted over time with no obvious means of resolution. This book addresses the subject of intractable social conflict from a new vantage point. Here, these types of conflict represent self-organizing phenomena, emerging quite naturally from the ongoing dynamics in human interaction at any scale—from the interpersonal to the international. Using the universal language and computational framework of nonlinear dynamical systems theory in combination with recent insights from social psychology, intractable conflict is understood as a system locked in special attractor states that constrain the thoughts and actions of the parties to the conflict. The emergence and maintenance of attractors for conflict can be described by means of formal models that incorporate the results of computer simulations, experiments, field research, and archival analyses. Multi-disciplinary research reflecting these approaches provides encouraging support for the dynamical systems perspective. Importantly, this text presents new views on conflict resolution. In contrast to traditional approaches that tend to focus on basic, short-lived cause-effect relations, the dynamical perspective emphasizes the temporal patterns and potential for emergence in destructive relations. Attractor deconstruction entails restoring complexity to a conflict scenario by isolating elements or changing the feedback loops among them. The creation of a latent attractor trades on the tendency toward multi-stability in dynamical systems and entails the consolidation of incongruent (positive) elements into a coherent structure. In the bifurcation scenario, factors are identified that can change the number and types of attractors in a conflict scenario. The implementation of these strategies may hold the key to unlocking intractable conflict, creating the potential for constructive social relations.
Download or read book Cognitive Development and Child Psychotherapy written by Stephen R. Shirk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like hiking off the well-traveled trail, attempting to bridge foreign do mains of research and practice entails certain risks. This volume repre sents an effort to explore the relatively uncharted territory of cognitive and social-cognitive processes embedded in child psychotherapy. The territory is largely uncharted, not because of a lack of interest in children and cognition, but because child psychotherapy has been chronically neglected by clinical researchers. For example, recent meta-analyses of the effectiveness of child psychotherapy draw on less than 30 non behavioral studies of child psychotherapy conducted over a 30-year period. The average of one study per year pales in comparison to the volume of research on adult psychotherapy. Moreover, research exam ining cognitive, affective, and language processes in child psycho therapy is virtually nonexistent. Consequently, the contributions to this volume should not be seen as reviews of an extant, clinical-research literature. Instead, they represent attempts to expand the more familiar and well-researched province of developmental psychology into the rel atively uncharted domain of child psychotherapy process. In addition to bridging the literature on child psychotherapy with research perspectives on children's cognitive and social-cognitive devel opment, this volume attempts to cross a second gap. Recent surveys of the utilization of psychotherapy research by practicing psychotherapists indicate the distance between these two domains is substantial. Only a small minority of practitioners find psychotherapy research to be a useful source of information for their practice.

Download or read book Self Organized Surface Structures with Ultrafast White Light written by Sebastian Uhlig and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sebastian Uhlig presents the first experimental investigation of self-organized surface structures (LIPSS) generated by ablation from different (semiconductor and metallic) targets with an ultrafast white-light continuum (WLC) spreading in wavelength from 400-750 nm. The main goal is to study the possibility of LIPSS formation upon irradiation with an incoherent and polychromatic light source (e.g. the WLC) in order to discriminate between the two debated formation scenarios. The generation of a suitable WLC in terms of sufficient white-light pulse energy, broad spectral bandwidth, and low spatial coherence for the LIPSS generation, as well as the characterization of this WLC are additional important objectives of this work.
