Book excerpt: The best-selling business leader offers a fresh and compelling path to success based on extensive research and candid interviews with some of the greatest winners of our time. In James Citrin's new paradigm-shifting book, he identifies the essential characteristics and disciplines that have led many of our outstanding athletes and other extraordinary performers to achieve equally significant accomplishments in their respective business careers. Citrin uses dozens of compelling interviews with personalities as varied and impressive as Colin Powell, Tony Hawk, Billie Jean King, Magic Johnson, Mia Hamm, and Buzz Aldrin, to name a few, to illustrate a new personal achievement program called the Dynamic Path—a plan that any businessperson can put to immediate use. Citrin identifies three stages on this path to greatness: • the Champion—combine the work ethic of Tiger Woods with self-confidence and mental toughness to reach the top • the Great Leader—follow Bob Iger's revitalization of Disney as one of our best brands • the Legacy—learn the ultimate lesson in good and lasting work from Lance Armstrong With inspiring anecdotes, real-world business examples, and his trademark penetrating insight into what it takes to get ahead, Citrin once again provides a clear and concise roadmap for personal excellence.

Book excerpt: The Pavlac Legacy is an adventure based on the true facts of a journey that reaches out to the people of Prague, Berlin, London, New York, Boston, Washington, Cincinnati, and finally, those of Aspen, Colorado. In 1865, a Torah is created by a poor scribe and his young son. It is done at the behest of a fellow countryman, the very wealthy and important Prague resident, David Pavlac. This great gift first binds the two families and then, through the years, involves people of many religious persuasions, people of royalty, people of great wealth, and the poorest of people. Young loves blossom, and later, old loves provide the needed strength to keep moving forward. Wars and hatred and death slowly, but relentlessly, change the lives of all in an ever growing circle of people. Tears vie with laughter as each new adversity unfolds. The ability to rise and fight, finds few with the courage to stand and battle. But others, be they young or old, emerge who accept the challenge. The 1865 creation finds its ultimate home in the mountains of Aspen, and with that, comes survival and a sense of future hope.

Book excerpt: Generational dialogues between 40 world-renowned creatives exploring how the creative legacy of previous generations is being reinterpreted over time. Description What is this phenomenon we call ‘legacy’? This intangible inheritance that we eventually leave for our posterity? Is it the creative and intellectual heritage that one generation passes on to the next? Conceived by Lukas Feireiss, the book at hand tries to probe this open question by engaging in critical dialogue different generations of creatives, connectors and thinkers alike. In some cases, between inherent legacy of parent and child, in many cases between mentor and students, or simply between friends. The more than 40 illustrious contributors to this dialogue derive from an array of fields of knowledge and experience. Their stories often provide very personal insights into their work and life. They also reveal a broader perspective on the overall realms of art, design, architecture, music, literature, photography and curation in the 20th and 21st century. With contributions by Olafur Eliasson and Einar Thorsteinn, Lukas Feireiss and Ai Weiwei, Charlie and Rem Koolhaas, Francesca Gavin and Kerry James Marshall, Sophie Lovell and Dieter Rams, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Yona Friedman, Shumon Basar and Ken Adam, Carson Chan and Phyllis Lambert, Rachel and Daniel Libeskind, Andres Ramirez and Denise Scott Brown, Aric Chen and Arata Isozaki, Ahmir Questlove Thompson and George Clinton and many more.

Book Appalachian Legacy

Download or read book Appalachian Legacy written by James Patrick Ziliak and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1964 President Lyndon Johnson traveled to Kentucky's Martin County to declare war on poverty. The following year he signed the Appalachian Regional Development Act,creating a state-federal partnership to improve the region's economic prospects through better job opportunities, improved human capital, and enhanced transportation. As the focal point of domestic antipoverty efforts, Appalachia took on special symbolic as well as economic importance. Nearly half a century later, what are the results? Appalachian Legacy provides the answers. Led by James P. Ziliak, prominent economists and demographers map out the region's current status. They explore important questions, including how has Appalachia fared since the signing of ARDA in 1965? How does it now compare to the nation as a whole in key categories such as education, employment, and health? Was ARDA an effective place-based policy for ameliorating hardship in a troubled region, or is Appalachia stillmired in a poverty trap? And what lessons can we draw from the Appalachian experience? In addition to providing the reports of important research to help analysts, policymakers, scholars, and regional experts discern what works in fighting poverty, Appalachian Legacy is an important contribution to the economic history of the eastern United States.

Book The Lifework and Legacy of Iona and Peter Opie

Download or read book The Lifework and Legacy of Iona and Peter Opie written by Julia C. Bishop and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iona and Peter Opie were twentieth-century pioneers. Their research and writing focused on the folklore of British children – their games, rhymes, riddles, secret languages and every variety of the traditions and inventions of the children’s collective physical and verbal play. Such closely observed, respectful, good-humoured and historically attuned writing about the traditions of childhood was a revelation to English-language readers around the world. Their numerous books were a rare phenomenon: they attracted a popular readership far beyond the professional and academic communities. For those who work with children, their collaborative research was a powerful influence in confirming the immense capacities of the young for cooperation, conservation, invention and imagination. Their books challenged – then and now – the bleak and limited view of children which focuses on their smallness, ignorance and powerlessness. The writers in this volume pay their tribute to the Opies by exploring a wonderfully varied topography of children's play, from different countries and different perspectives. Their research is vivid and challenging; that is, as it should be, in the tradition of the Opies. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Play.

Book Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors

Download or read book Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors written by William B. Bonvillian and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American economy faces two deep problems: expanding innovation and raising the rate of quality job creation. Both have roots in a neglected problem: the resistance of Legacy economic sectors to innovation. While the U.S. has focused its policies on breakthrough innovations to create new economic frontiers like information technology and biotechnology, most of its economy is locked into Legacy sectors defended by technological/ economic/ political/ social paradigms that block competition from disruptive innovations that could challenge their models. Americans like to build technology "covered wagons" and take them "out west" to open new innovation frontiers; we don't head our wagons "back east" to bring innovation to our Legacy sectors. By failing to do so, the economy misses a major opportunity for innovation, which is the bedrock of U.S. competitiveness and its standard of living. Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors uses a new, unifying conceptual framework to identify the shared features underlying structural obstacles to innovation in major Legacy sectors: energy, air and auto transport, the electric power grid, buildings, manufacturing, agriculture, health care delivery and higher education, and develops approaches to understand and transform them. It finds both strengths and obstacles to innovation in the national innovation environments - a new concept that combines the innovation system and the broader innovation context - for a group of Asian and European economies. Manufacturing is a major Legacy sector that presents a particular challenge because it is a critical stage in the innovation process. By increasingly offshoring production, the U.S. is losing important parts of its innovation capacity. "Innovate here, produce here," where the U.S. took all the gains of its strong innovation system at every stage, is being replaced by "innovate here, produce there," which threatens to lead to "produce there, innovate there." To bring innovation to Legacy sectors, authors William Bonvillian and Charles Weiss recommend that policymakers focus on all stages of innovation from research through implementation. They should fill institutional gaps in the innovation system and take measures to address structural obstacles to needed disruptive innovations. In the specific case of advanced manufacturing, the production ecosystem can be recreated to reverse "jobless innovation" and add manufacturing-led innovation to the U.S.'s still-strong, research-oriented innovation system.
