One such event solves a mystery of a bomb assassination plot and a shooting; politicians were compromised, Hoffa pulled strings, and there are heretofore undisclosed facts that involve President Kennedy's assassination. I never dreamed these details would ever be uncovered.

There are three chapters on the long-ignored Montreal, Canada, wing of the Bonanno Family. This group eclipsed any New York Family in terms of wealth and reach. Due to their deep involvement in the drug trade, the Montreal crew operated worldwide, unlike the New York Families. Most readers of La Cosa Nostra will recognize many of the characters from its history. The book provides details on well-known hoods such as Carmine Galante, Dominick "Sonny Black" Napolitano, Joe Massino, Anthony Spero, and Vincent Basciano. The author terms this phenomenon parapolitics_the exercise of power by covert means_which tends to metastasize into deep politics_the interplay of unacknowledged forces that spin out of the control of the original policy initiators. We must recognize that U.S. influence is grounded not just in military and economic superiority, Scott contends, but also in so-called soft power. We need a 'soft politics' of persuasion and nonviolence, especially as America is embroiled in yet another disastrous intervention, this time in Iraq.
