This book was released on 2021-02-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first quarter of the thirteenth century, an anonymous Flemish writer set in writing, in Old French, a chronicle of Normandy, England, Flanders and northern France. It ranged from the arrival of the Vikings in Normandy to the early years of the reign of King Henry III of England, ending with an account of the translation of the relics of St Thomas Becket to their magnificent new shrine in Canterbury Cathedral in 1220. Along the way, it adopted and formed part of a tradition of writing of the history of the dukes of Normandy and kings of England, a tradition which had developed in Latin in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and then continued in Old French. The work is famous for vibrant and informed description of the reign of King John, in particular the period of baronial reaction, Magna Carta, ensuing civil war and the nearly-successful invasion of England by Louis, heir to the kingdom of France. Flanders supplied troops to both sides, and this Flemish author sees these events in close detail, and from the Flemish, not the French or English, point of view. He may himself have been an eyewitness, directly involved, but if not he would have known many who had fought and died in this conflict. Janet Shirley’s translation of this chronicle, the first into English, brings the work of the Anonymous of Béthune to a new audience in this volume, accompanied by an introduction and historical notes by Paul Webster.

WILLIAM THE CONQUEKOK, SEVENTH DUKE OF NORMANDY. From his Accession in 1035 to the Death of Edward the Confessor. SECTION I. The old chroniclers were fond of mixing up fable with fact, and as they lived in superstitious times, their fictions were usually of a supernatural character. The conqueror of England was too illustrious a personage to be overlooked by the compilers of historical romance, and we accordingly find several prodigies accompanying his birth, which deserve to be recorded, as showing the spirit of the age. Of these we shall select a few of the most ingenious and striking. During her pregnancy, his mother had two remarkable dreams, both predicting the future greatness of her son. She imagined that a lofty tree issued from her loins, the branches of which overshadowed the whole of Normandy; and on another occasion, she fancied that her intestines were stretched over the whole of Normandy and England, both of which dreams received their solution when William was firmly seated on the ducal throne and had reaped the fruits of the victory at Hastings. Immediately after birth, the child was placed on a small heap of straw, which he clutched with his hands, on which the nurse observed, " This infant begins so early to collect and amass, that I know not what large possessions he will acquire, when arrived at manhood." When yet a child in the castle of Falaise, he was visited by William Talvas, Countof Bellesme, Alencon, and Sees, who, judgingfrom his features that he would quell the ambition of his house, exclaimed, " May the curse of Heaven light on you, since through you and your race my power will be laid low, and the fame of my posterity be obscured."1 William was eight years of age when his father died, having succeeded to the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dukes of Normandy, From the Time of Rollo to the Expulsion of King John by Philip Augustus of FranceOn the death of this enlightened sovereign, the un happy divisions among his sons spread anarchy and discord in all directions; his defensive policy was abandoned, and the northern pirates, who had invaded Belgic Gaul so early as the year 286 of our era, but who had been held in check by the armed fleets sta tioned by Charlemagne at the mouths of rivers, again renewed their predatory incursions. Plunder alone' was the object of the early adventurers, with which they returned to their native country. After the lapse of several centuries, Rollo, the most distinguished of the Scandinavian chiefs, subdued one of the finest provinces of Gaul, and acquired a permanent home and sovereignty, by founding the duchy of Normandy. The object of this introduction is briefly and rapidly to trace the character and conduct of his predecessors, before he obtained full and independent possession of N custrin.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Robert Curthose Duke of Normandy

Download or read book Robert Curthose Duke of Normandy written by William M. Aird and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The career of Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son and duke of Normandy from 1087 to 1106, has long merited detailed reappraisal. Robert's relationship with members of his family shaped the political landscape of England and Normandy for much of the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, and this new biography firmly locates the duke's career in the social, cultural and political context of the times." "William Aird's biography offers a fresh assessment of the dynamics of Norman political culture and presents a critique of medieval rulership. For much of his life, Robert's presence influenced the actions of the kings of England and even after his incarceration by Henry I (from 1106 until his death in 1134) his son William Clito (d. 1128) continued the fight. Robert Curthose is returned to centre stage in the bloody drama of the period, a drama which has been so long dominated by accounts from a royal and English perspective."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Norman Rule in Normandy 911 1144

Download or read book Norman Rule in Normandy 911 1144 written by Mark S. Hagger and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2017 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In around 911, the Viking adventurer Rollo was granted the city of Rouen and its surrounding district by the Frankish King Charles the Simple. Two further grants of territory followed in 924 and 933. But while Frankish kings might grant this land to Rollo and his son, William Longsword, these two Norman dukes and their successors had to fight and negotiate with rival lords, hostile neighbours, kings, and popes in order to establish and maintain their authority over it. This book explores the geographical and political development of what would become the duchy of Normandy, and the relations between the dukes and these rivals for their lands and their subjects' fidelity. It looks, too, at the administrative machinery the dukes built to support their regime, from their toll-collectors and vicomtes (an official similar to the English sheriff) to the political theatre of their courts and the buildings in which they were staged. At the heart of this exercise are the narratives that purport to tell us about what the dukes did, and the surviving body of the dukes' diplomas. Neither can be taken at face value, and both tell us as much about the concerns and criticisms of the dukes' subjects as they do about the strength of the dukes' authority. The diplomas, in particular, because most of them were not written by scribes attached to the dukes' households but rather by their beneficiaries, can be used to recover something of how the dukes' subjects saw their rulers, as well as something of what they wanted or needed from them. Ducal power was the result of a dialogue, and this volume enables both sides to speak. Mark Hagger is a senior lecturer in medieval history at Bangor University.
