Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duchess of Dreams Had the young person whose coming lay at the bottom of all these social upheavals been able to view their extent and import, she would have been genuinely delighted. Like most Russian civilises, she suffered from a permanent state of boredom; any artless exhibition of human enthusiasm filled her with a pleasure that almost approached envy. It was indeed Mrs. Rumbold's obvious delight in her acquaint ance and her naive energy in pursuing it, when they found themselves the guests of the same hotel in Pau two years ago, that had first drawn the imperial lady's attention to the little American. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. Book An Exuberant Catalogue of Dreams

Download or read book An Exuberant Catalogue of Dreams written by Clive Aslet and published by Aurum Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To a modern visitor nothing will seem more British than a classic country house like Cliveden or Leeds Castle. But the truth is actually very different. That such fabulous places exist in their present form - or in the case of, say, Blenheim, survive in the ownership of the family - is as much as anything down to American money and taste. Now, for the first time, Clive Aslet's magnificent book reveals the extent of this remarkable phenomenon. Covering eighteen Americans and their houses - from the captivating May Goelet and Floors Castle in Scotland to the big game hunter Willie James and West Dean Park on the south coast - he illustrates the varied destinies by which stupendously wealthy Americans ended up owning great stately piles, and the variety of transformations they wrought upon them. Some of the marriages between aristocrats and heiresses were happy, others distinctly less so. Dowries went on new roofs to keep the rain out and electric lighting and central heating to modernise dwellings that could be as wintry as the hearts of their ancestral owners. For self-made magnates like William Randolph Hearst or Gordon Selfridge a country house was a rich man's folly - Hearst filled St Donat's castle in Wales with untold fittings and trophies but hardly ever visited it, Selfridge's pharaonic vision for Hengistbury Head never escaped the drawing board. For others, like Andrew Carnegie at Skibo or Sir Paul Getty at Wormsley, it was the chance to out-do the natives by creating idylls of baronial splendour or arcadian cricket fields. But the American influence, as Clive Aslet shows, was lasting, and profound beyond architecture and design. What became known as the `country house look' was codified by an American - Nancy Lancaster. The greatest of early twentieth-century gardens, Hidcote, was created by an American, Lawrence Johnston. It was an American romance - with Wallis Simpson at Fort Belvedere - that caused Edward VIII to abdicate. Illustrated throughout with magnificent photographs, An Exuberant Catalogue of Dreams is a fascinating chronicle of how it happened that, as Gladstone's Chancellor of the Exchequer remarked in 1898, `We are all Americans now'.

Book The Duchess of Angoul me and the Two Restorations Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duchess of Angouleme and the Two Restorations This history begins at Calais on the 24th of April, 1814, at the moment when the Duchess of Angouleme had just landed with Louis XVIII., the Prince of Conde, and the Duke of Bourbon. Between France and royalty a sort of Lamourette kiss had been exchanged. Credulous persons fancied that the iron age had gone, never to return; that the golden age had come, and would be eternal. The sky is blue. A superb spring day makes all things radiant. Not a breath of air ruffles the glassy surface of the sea. N 0 one thinks about present disasters, the mourning country, or the strangers who tread its sacred soil. To enthusiastic royalists, the Republic and the Em pire are only an evil dream that vanishes at dawn. Rmigres and purchasers of national property experi ence the same exaltation. No one suspects the pro found hatred which, at the end of three months, will divide minds that now seem to be in perfect accord. It is a sort of truce of God In the midst of social and political success. It is the eclogue, the idyl which precedes the tragedy. Book Duchess of Palms

Download or read book Duchess of Palms written by Nadine Eckhardt and published by Univ of TX + ORM. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An extraordinary work of women’s history, offering a candid consideration of the wifely role in politics during a pre-women’s movement era.” —Texas Observer Child of the Great Depression, teenage “Duchess of Palms” beauty queen, wife of an acclaimed novelist and later of a brilliant U.S. congressman, and ultimately a successful single working woman and mother, Nadine Eckhardt has lived a fascinating life. In this unique, funny, and honest memoir, she recounts her journey from being a “fifties girl” who lived through the men in her life to becoming a woman in her own right, working toward her own goals. Eckhardt’s first marriage to writer Billy Lee Brammer gave her entrée to liberal political and literary circles in Austin and Washington, where she and Brammer both worked for Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. She describes the heady excitement of LBJ’s world—a milieu that Brammer vividly captured in his novel The Gay Place. She next recalls her second marriage to Bob Eckhardt, whom she helped get elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as her growing involvement with the counterculture of social protest, sexual revolution, and drug use. Eckhardt honestly recounts how the changing times changed her perception of herself, recalling that “I didn’t know how to achieve for myself, only for others, and I felt ripped off and empty.” This painful realization opened the door to a new life for Eckhardt. Her memoir concludes with a joyful description of her multifaceted later life as a restaurateur, assistant to Molly Ivins, writer, and center of a wide circle of friends. “The ‘answer record’ to The Gay Place—by Brammer’s ex-wife.” —Texas Monthly
