In North America, previous generations of dual-career professional couples were likely to have children, but today many such couples forego parenthood. Increased attention in management literature has been given to work-life balance of dual-career professional couples with children, but there is a paucity of qualitative research on work-life balance of dual-career professional couples without children. Given current social transformations, evolving work values, career aspirations, and changing family structures, more investigation into this demographic group is needed. This study sets out to examine how individuals in dual-career professional couples without children understand and experience work-life balance. This qualitative study draws on interview data collected from 21 couples to explore the following research questions: 1) How do dual-career professional couples without children define work-life balance? 2) What are the main influences on the work-life balance of dual-career professional couples without children? 3) How do dual-career professional couples without children experience work-life balance? and 4) How do dual-career professional couples without children manage their work-life balance? This study adds to contemporary academic literature by exploring the experiences of professional dual-career couples without children, within an interpretive ontology. This study also challenges the call in management scholarship to develop one clear definition of work-life balance. It indicates that work-life balance is a subjective construct that differs from individual to individual and from couple to couple, even those who share many similarities. Finally, this study demonstrates that work-life balance in professional dual-career couples is a social-relational process.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This exploratory qualitative research sought to understand how dual-career couple factors affect faculty couples' academic careers. Although there is a great deal written about academic careers and dual-career couples, there is limited literature on academic dual-career couples. This investigation focused on the perceptions and experiences of six purposefully selected dual-career academic couples at six schools in a greater Midwestern metropolitan region. The goal was to understand the interaction between dual-career lifestyles and the complex forces that impact their career development over time when one or both were in the establishment stage of their careers. According to Schein (1996), a dual-career lifestyle defines couples' self-concepts as they seek to coherently integrate two careers and two sets of personal and family concerns into an overall pattern that supports both the personal and professional dimensions of their lives. Respondents' perceived critical events, concerns, adjustments and strategies were documented from twelve semi-structured individual and six grounded couple interviews; archival documents (curriculum vitae and institutional websites), and demographic survey data over a nine year period (1994-2003). The content analysis focused on the mesosystem between personal, interpersonal and professional domains which occurred in tandem during each couples' development as individuals, families and academics over time. While these couples' critical events mostly paralleled those of non-dual career faculties, their experiences appeared to be more keenly impacted by six thematic concerns about time and timing, maintenance money, location and proximity, professional identity, support and scholarship, and relationship issues the impact of their relationships on their careers. When one partner's career clearly was more advanced, the consequences for the junior members were more dramatic because his/her career decisions were influenced by those made by the more experienced academic in the relationship. However, when couples' careers were closer in development, couples tended to make more egalitarian decisions by considering the impact of both careers in the short and long run. In light of the increasing dual-career academic couple trend and anticipated turnover for an aging faculty, this study contributes to a better understanding of the interplay between linked academic lives and their impact on career development and decisions over time.

Yet, strong gender inequalities persist in the career chances of equally highly qualified men and women. Women are still underrepresented in executive/leading positions in both the private and public sector of the economy. We argue that such gender inequalities are also due to the fact that the majority of highly educated women lives with an equally highly educated partner. For these women the realization of dual careers becomes ever more important and represents an essential prerequisite for their own professional development. Following Phyllis Moen's “linked lives” idea, we will argue that the achievement or failure of dual-career arrangements is a “social-relational process” (Moen 2003a: 10) and that partners' lives are embedded with and influenced by each other. In particular, we will discuss how this entwining occurs, which processes at different levels play a role, and how these different processes interact with each other. Finally, we will give some suggestions on the direction for future research.

My first studies in the mid-1970s looked at the conflicts that emerge in dual career couples as the partners combine their various roles. Ideas for the early studies initially came from con versations with clients, friends, and people I met trav eling. Soon after the topic of dual careers came up, dis cussions of guilt and frustration followed. The partici pants in my first studies turned out to be predominantly women. Men expressed little interest in participating. A common response was, "Talk to my wife. " 7 8 PREFACE Ostensibly, husbands saw their partners, but not themselves, as dealing with conflicting roles. Although I presumed this to be somewhat true, I knew from ob serving my own husband that my having a career had an immeasurable impact on him. Were men denying something? Were women overly sensitive? Discussions with my husband, which helped me to get a better grasp on what male partners might be feeling, planted the seed for my subsequent book on men in dual-career 1 families, published in 1985. In gathering material for that book, I was struck by the contrast with men's ear lier disinterest. Husbands appeared eager to talk about their lives. Their greatest concern-what happens to the children?-became the focus of my last set of studies. Why this book? "Sharing it all" symbolizes the es sence of a two-career marriage.
