Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running from a mutinous crew, sucked through a wormhole like in a bad sci-fi movie and slowly running out of booze . . . and that’s just the beginning of this non-traditional story that starts off as a simple captain’s log book and evolves into something more like a really warped and twisted TV show in text. Follow the Captain and crew on a series of seemingly random adventures, where it’s obvious it’s not just the Captain who’s been drinking. At some point you may ask yourself, is all this just coincidence or is there something dark and annoying on the horizon? The Captain seems to have a drinking problem, the problem being he never has enough to drink and people from his past keep showing up and ruining his buzz / Akki a corrupted artificial intelligence who occasionally takes over the Captain’s log has his own plans, mostly self-serving ones because he has nothing better to do. The rest of the crew, pirates, hot chicks, robots and a foul beaked little space penguin round out the Drunken Space Pirates and with all the wise cracks and shots aimed at everyone and everything its clear the alcohol flows rather freely within the D.S.P. Many of the off the wall characters of the D.S.P. are walking guilty pleasures who say what they feel, do what they want and just generally give it to life, pop culture and the universe in general with both barrels . . . and occasionally fish...

Book excerpt: The small rural Queensland town of Lawson is still reeling from the arrival of the 1990s and modernity. Surfie teacher Lawrence Lalor is condemned there to servitude y the Catholic Education League. From his veranda and the pub, he is quick to learn that while Lawson is just another 'dead-kangaroo-on-the-side-of-the-road' country town, with its streets named after saints, beneath its simple surface it is a town of depth and deception. Drunken mistakes, accidental friendships and the arcane practice dignity are more rare than precious. Lawrence's journey through Lawson - the supposed 'jewel of the west' - gouges a scar on his emotional landscape that will stay with him forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first mainstream history of humour. Hilarious and well-researched, this book from household name William Hartston, a presenter, author and journalist, makes a perfect gift. Of all human qualities, humour is perhaps the most puzzling. In this very first history of humour, author and humourist William Hartston looks at every aspect of the evolution of humour and our attitudes towards it with a view to developing a proper Theory Of Everything Humorous. From comedy in ancient Greece and jokes in ancient Rome, to laughter in the Bible and the secret of comic delivery; from how humour changed following the American civil war, to how Mark Twain changed written comedy in the English-speaking world, William leaves no stone unturned in his quest to understand what makes us chuckle. Besides being academically well-founded, A History of Humour will, unlike almost everything else written on the subject, be both seriously humorous and humorously serious.

Book Ladies Laughing

Download or read book Ladies Laughing written by Barbara Levy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging and accessible book examines the world of seven contemporary, popular American women writers and their individual use of wit as a subtle and effective strategy to engage, or "control", the reader. A chapter is devoted to each of the seven writers - Lisa Alther, Rita Mae Brown, Nora Ephron, Shirley Jackson, Alison Lurier, Grace Paley, and Anne Tyler - and discusses their writings and their use of wit in the context of their lives. An opening chapter frames wit and control in psychological realities, and a concluding chapter summarizes the power of wit. A bibliography of the writers' works is also included, making this an ideal introduction and companion to these writers and their works.

Book Wot a Way to Run a War

Download or read book Wot a Way to Run a War written by Ted Fahrenwald and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Exquisitely funny, these letters are also an historical treasure that gives tremendous insight into the day-to-day life of a typical USAAF fighter group” (Jay A. Stout, author of Vanished Hero). Ted Fahrenwald flew P-47s and P-51s with the famed 352nd Fighter Group out of Bodney, England, during the critical tipping-point period of the air war over Europe. A classic devil-may-care fighter pilot, he was also a distinctively talented writer and correspondent. After a typical day of aerial combat and strafing missions over Nazi-occupied Europe—and of course, the requisite partying and creative mischief on base—Ted would sit in his Nissen hut at a borrowed manual typewriter and compose exquisitely humorous letters detailing his exploits in the air and on the ground to his family back home. But these letters are not the mundane missives of a homesick young man who missed his mother’s cooking. Rather, this journalistically educated and incurably comedic pilot detailed his aerial exploits in a hilarious and self-effacing style that combines the vernacular of the day with flights of joyful imagination rivaling St. Exupery. And he didn’t sanitize his letters—much. Ted enthusiastically narrates the day-to-day rollercoaster ribaldry that was the natural M.O. of the young men who were tasked to kill Hitler’s Luftwaffe. His descriptions of near-constant drinking, skirt-chasing, gambling, and out-and-out tomfoolery put the lie to the notion of the Greatest Generation as an earnest band of do-gooders. Praise for Ted Fahrenwald’s Bailout Over Normandy “A 1940s masterpiece with a heart and soul unlike anything that’s been published.” —Jay Stout, author of Fortress Ploesti “Get to know one of the more rambunctious members of the Greatest Generation with this memoir.” —Book News, Inc.
