Book excerpt: Scholars in the field of higher education administration have researched the factors that mold the collegiate experience for Latino college students, specifically how they affect retention at campuses in the midwest, southwest and west coast regions of the United States. However, there is limited research on this topic in the northeast region of the United States. This phenomenological, qualitative study supplements current research by providing findings on the drop out decision considerations of Latino former college students who attended a college or university in the northeast region of the United States and were members of Latino Greek lettered organizations. Tinto's Model of Student Departure (1993) was utilized as the guiding theoretical framework for this research study. Five themes emerged as factors in the drop out considerations of the participants: socioeconomic status is an important consideration in persistence of Latino college students, the expectations of what it means to be a college student are challenging for first-generation Latino college students, Latino college students struggle with acclimation to college life, Latino college students find student engagement opportunities by clustering with other Latino college students of similar backgrounds, and financing a college education was an overwhelming burden for Latino college students. Implications for higher education administrators and student affairs practitioners are discussed. Additionally, recommendations for future research are presented.

Book excerpt: This study of community college Hispanic dropouts in a southeastern community college provides insights about personal or institutional factors that may lead up to dropping out or persisting at the community college. Two research questions were explored in this study: the first question asks what individuals and institutional factors pressured Hispanic students to drop out from a community college in the southeastern quadrant of New Mexico?; the second, asks what individual and institutional factors encouraged / motivated Hispanic students to stay in a community college in the southeastern quadrant of New Mexico? The conclusions indicated Hispanics left the community college for a variety of institutional and person reasons. These reasons ranged from financial reasons to instructional methods to personal responsibilities to character attributes. While dropping out was a personal decision, it can be implied there was an absence of academic and personal "validating experiences" (Rendon, 2002). Recommendations to address the dropout rates included implementing a mandatory "financial seminar" during the students freshman year; promoting the services to make sure students are aware of their existence and benefits; and requiring mandatory training for administrators, counselors, faculty, and staff of reaching out to Hispanic students. Recommendations for future research included a qualitative study involving Hispanics that successfully completed a certificate or associate's degree identifying factors that helped them succeed; a quantitative study that would compare enrollment rates and dropout rates of Hispanic students in New Mexico community colleges to identify successful strategies; and a mixed-methods study of NMJC county high school and junior high teachers using surveys and focus groups to gain insight to the Hispanic dropout issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This dissertation explored the factors associated with dropping out of middle school and high school among Hispanic/Latino male students. Predictor variables investigated were: age, home language, retention history, SES, program of studies, suspensions, and GPA. Data were from a large urban school district in the state of Florida. A sample of 865 Hispanic/Latino male Latino students in the 8th grade in 1995-96 was followed longitudinally every year to the year 2000-01. Survival analysis and logistic regression were used to examine the data. The research questions were: 1) What is the relation between age, home language, retention history, SES, program of studies, suspensions, and GPA and dropping out of middle and secondary school by Hispanic/Latino males? 2) At what grade levels do the predictor variables begin to affect the male Hispanic/ Latino students' propensity for early school leaving? When are they at greatest risk? Of the predictor variables included in this research, age, retention history, program of studies, suspension, and GPA, were found to be statistically significant in the students' decision to drop out of school. This research also found that approximately 31% of this Hispanic/Latino male sample dropped out prior to completing their high school education during the 5-year span. Investigating the most hazardous time for dropping out of school, results suggested that for these students it is well into their secondary education, very close to when they would actually graduate, during their junior to senior years. It may be the time close to their eighteenth birthday that lets them legally choose to leave school that triggers this hazardous time period.

Book excerpt: Latinos are the largest and most rapidly growing ethnic minority in the United States, and they have the highest dropout rates of any major ethnic group in the country (U.S. Department of Labor, 2003). Latinos' educational attainment is consistently lower than that of other students (Gandara, 2008). The majority of Latino college students in the state of Oregon are of Mexican origin and have parents with low income and low levels of education, which ultimately influences the students' decisions in whether or not to pursue higher education. This study examines these and other factors which motivate Latino students to pursue higher education in selected colleges in the state of Oregon. Quantitative data was gathered and evaluated to determine their academic self-efficacy, an idea grounded in Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura 1997). Accordingly, this dissertation analyzed personal, environmental, and demographic factors as determinants of the academic self-efficacy of Latino college students. The results indicated that mothers (family being one of the environmental factors) were the most motivating persons for Latino college students pursuing higher education, followed by the influence of friends. The results also revealed that another influencing factor in academic self-efficacy of Latino college students was their own self-efficacy and their personal goal orientation. Female students reported the highest scores of self-efficacy for a four-year institution, followed by students of both genders aged between 18 and 22 years old. Latino college students' choice of agriculture as a program to pursue in higher education was also analyzed, despite the fact that the majority (92 %) of Latino college students did not choose an agriculture-related career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on Latino undergraduate students majoring in science, and their decisions to access academic support programs. The purposes were to understand (1) factors that influence Latino students' career-related choices; choosing a science major and accessing resources in support of their academic careers; and (2) what role socializers play in those decisions. The informants were four Latino college students who chose science majors when admitted to a research university. Using a case-study interview approach, they were interviewed longitudinally over two years to understand the influences on their decisions. Data codes and themes were generated through interpretive analysis of interview transcripts, and results were evaluated against the Eccles' et al. (1983) expectancy-value model of career choices. Three categories were identified: decisions made prior to matriculation, decisions made in adjusting to the university environment, and continuing decisions to persist in the sciences. First, initial decisions as high school students were made within a web environment, through self-dialogue. Participants relied on web information in a non-interactive way to make decisions on their own. Parents, teachers, and peers merely validated decisions. Second, the process by which these students adjusted in their first year of college revealed differences among the participating students. Unlike the two male computer science majors, two female biology majors had a more difficult time participating in classes, being active about seeking help and contacting socializers, and managing their personal lives. This contrast continued on to their second year. Finally, the study yielded an iterative notion of decision-making about persistence in science. The two female biology majors having a hard time in their classes constantly revisited their initial choice of a science major. They accessed the web to get information necessary to find a solution and relay that to new socializers, such as advisers, mentoring program staff, and peers in college. Drawing from these findings, this study yielded a framework for discussing Latino science students' academic decision making. The importance of the web in initial decisions has digital equity implications, and indicates the importance of Internet outreach. Further, differences in the decision process imply a need for personalized support structures.
