Book Dreaming

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jennifer M. Windt
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2015-06-05
  • ISBN : 0262028670
  • Pages : 825 pages

Download or read book Dreaming written by Jennifer M. Windt and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive proposal for a conceptual framework for describing conscious experience in dreams, integrating philosophy of mind, sleep and dream research, and interdisciplinary consciousness studies. Dreams, conceived as conscious experience or phenomenal states during sleep, offer an important contrast condition for theories of consciousness and the self. Yet, although there is a wealth of empirical research on sleep and dreaming, its potential contribution to consciousness research and philosophy of mind is largely overlooked. This might be due, in part, to a lack of conceptual clarity and an underlying disagreement about the nature of the phenomenon of dreaming itself. In Dreaming, Jennifer Windt lays the groundwork for solving this problem. She develops a conceptual framework describing not only what it means to say that dreams are conscious experiences but also how to locate dreams relative to such concepts as perception, hallucination, and imagination, as well as thinking, knowledge, belief, deception, and self-consciousness. Arguing that a conceptual framework must be not only conceptually sound but also phenomenologically plausible and carefully informed by neuroscientific research, Windt integrates her review of philosophical work on dreaming, both historical and contemporary, with a survey of the most important empirical findings. This allows her to work toward a systematic and comprehensive new theoretical understanding of dreaming informed by a critical reading of contemporary research findings. Windt's account demonstrates that a philosophical analysis of the concept of dreaming can provide an important enrichment and extension to the conceptual repertoire of discussions of consciousness and the self and raises new questions for future research.

Book Rifts in Time and in the Self

Download or read book Rifts in Time and in the Self written by Cheryl Dueck and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2004 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 marked the end of East Germany's socialist regime and a new beginning for a unified German Federal Republic. Cultural historians agree that the event caused one of the deepest rifts in time and thinking seen by an entire generation of Germans--a rift that left its mark on the psyche of every citizen, challenging notions of the personal and the political, and crashing traditional understandings of the individual and the collective self. In this bold rethinking of the question, Cheryl Dueck goes beyond the social, political, and psychological discourses that Marx and Freud, Foucault and Lacan viewed as the initiators of modern (socialist) identities to explore the literature and discourse of the quest for unity of the female subject. Reading such authors as Christa Wolf, Brigitte Reimann, Helga Königsdorf, and Helga Schubert, Dueck traces the striking fissures which run through time and through the female self, haunting women within the socialist project. The book shows how two generations of women writers have struggled consciously and systematically in their letters, aesthetic writings, and literary production to create a new language to express their own sense of self within a restrictive socialist and patriarchal system. Rifts in Time and in the Self offers an unprecedented look at the reconceptualizations of the female subject during several phases of GDR history, and women writers' persistent attempt to carve out spaces of identity and community.

Book The Ecological Rift

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Bellamy Foster
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2011-11-01
  • ISBN : 1583672192
  • Pages : 544 pages

Download or read book The Ecological Rift written by John Bellamy Foster and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity in the twenty-first century is facing what might be described as its ultimate environmental catastrophe: the destruction of the climate that has nurtured human civilization and with it the basis of life on earth as we know it. All ecosystems on the planet are now in decline. Enormous rifts have been driven through the delicate fabric of the biosphere. The economy and the earth are headed for a fateful collision—if we don't alter course. In The Ecological Rift: Capitalism’s War on the Earth environmental sociologists John Bellamy Foster, Brett Clark, and Richard York offer a radical assessment of both the problem and the solution. They argue that the source of our ecological crisis lies in the paradox of wealth in capitalist society, which expands individual riches at the expense of public wealth, including the wealth of nature. In the process, a huge ecological rift is driven between human beings and nature, undermining the conditions of sustainable existence: a rift in the metabolic relation between humanity and nature that is irreparable within capitalist society, since integral to its very laws of motion. Critically examining the sanguine arguments of mainstream economists and technologists, Foster, Clark, and York insist instead that fundamental changes in social relations must occur if the ecological (and social) problems presently facing us are to be transcended. Their analysis relies on the development of a deep dialectical naturalism concerned with issues of ecology and evolution and their interaction with the economy. Importantly, they offer reasons for revolutionary hope in moving beyond the regime of capital and toward a society of sustainable human development.

Book Not Yet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jamie Owen Daniel
  • Publisher : Verso
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780860914396
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Not Yet written by Jamie Owen Daniel and published by Verso. This book was released on 1997 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst Bloch (1885–1977) is now recognized as a philosopher and cultural critic of the greatest importance, his subtle and profound developments of utopian Marxism as influential for the student New Left of the 1960s and 1970s as they were for the leftist movements of the twenties. Today, in the United States and Britain, his enormous body of work is attracting a new generation of readers: more translations are appearing, and his utopian thought is finding a new resonance in many different contexts. Several of the authors here address the centrality of a radically unconventional concept of utopia to Bloch's thought; others write on the question of memory and pedagogical theory. There is a Blochian reading of crime fiction, illuminating overviews of Bloch's work and an exploration of the stylistics of hope in Bloch's Spuren, as well as a translation of excerpts from that extraordinary book. The essays gathered are intended, above all, to recommend Bloch's work as a challenge to older models of historical materialism and utopian emancipation, and give specific examples of how that work can contribute to current debates about utopia, nationalism and collective memory, the liberatory content of popular cultural forms, and the complex relationship between ideology and everyday life. Together they provide a timely introduction to one of the most inspiring thinkers of the twentieth century. Contributors include: Klaus Berghahn, Tim Dayton, Vincent Geoghagan, Henry Giroux, David Kaufmann, Mary Layoun, Ruth Levitas, Peter McLaren, Tom Moylan, Darko Suvin and Jack Zipes.

Book Collected Writings of Giles Clark

Download or read book Collected Writings of Giles Clark written by Judith Pickering and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timeless and thought-provoking volume makes available the collected writings of Giles Clark (1947–2019), whose original clinical theory constitutes a major contribution to the areas of analytical psychology, psychoanalysis and philosophy. Clark’s work influenced generations of analytical psychologists, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and trainees in England, Australia and elsewhere. His oeuvre covers important themes such as psychoanalysis as a deeply relational, mutually transformative and intersubjective endeavor; how, as wounded healers, analysts learn the art of recycling their own madness so as better to assist their patients; the clinical treatment of borderline and narcissistic disturbances and personality disorders; and psychosomatic issues as manifest and experienced in transference and countertransference relations in the analytic field. The book also explores the relevance of Spinoza, Santayana, Jung and German Romantic philosophers to analytical psychology and psychoanalysis, not merely in historical or theoretical terms but as a vital resource to guide clinical practice as demonstrated through a series of compelling case studies. The Collected Writings of Giles Clark is of great interest to Jungian analysts, analytical psychologists and psychotherapists in practice and in training, as well as anyone interested in understanding the interface between depth psychology, philosophy and neuropsychology, and in the mind-body problem more generally.
