Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living the Dream tells the history behind the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the battle over King's legacy that continued through the decades that followed. Creating the first national holiday to honor an African American was a formidable achievement and an act of resistance against conservative and segregationist opposition. Congressional efforts to commemorate King began shortly after his assassination. The ensuing political battles slowed the progress of granting him a namesake holiday and crucially defined how his legacy would be received. Though Coretta Scott King's mission to honor her husband's commitment to nonviolence was upheld, conservative politicians sought to use the holiday to advance a whitewashed, nationalistic, and even reactionary vision of King's life and thought. This book reveals the lengths that activists had to go to elevate an African American man to the pantheon of national heroes, how conservatives took advantage of the commemoration to bend the arc of King's legacy toward something he never would have expected, and how grassroots causes, unions, and antiwar demonstrators continued to try to claim this sanctified day as their own.

But, at the age of 56, his perfect life is suddenly disintegrating. Buried dreams return to haunt him. New political alignments threaten to undo him. Book excerpt: Dorothy Word, an African American woman dreaming of a hopeful future for her people, advocated for African American scientists, athletes, inventors, and others often not recognized for their contributions. She writes not as noted scholar, politician, or journalist, but as a layperson from the back row of public visibility. As a retired teacher in several elementary schools she continued to lobby for children and their families. She was an activist passionately pursuing the dream for equity and justice for all. Her voice needs to be heard, and Jacob offers a perceptive framework for an intercultural understanding of her message. Dorothy first became acquainted with Jacob Elias and his wife Lillian in 2001 when they were pastors of her congregation, Parkview Mennonite Church, Kokomo, Indiana. Following her retirement Dorothy wrote newspaper columns for the Kokomo Tribune. Having served as her pastor for four years and ten years later exercising power of attorney for her as she receded into dementia, Jacob gathered forty-one of her articles into this volume.

Book Beyond Business as Usual

Download or read book Beyond Business as Usual written by Michael Munn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wherever we are in the quality movement, there is more to discover--to explore. Today, quality serves business as a way of increasing profits. That is one end of a spectrum. Tomorrow, quality takes business into the rest of the spectrum. In this new dimension, business learns to serve, and be served, from a foundation of unconditional love. At the other end of the spectrum is quality's far-reaching goal--the attainment of harmony between people and the entire cosmos. This goal reveals the gap, and steps, between it and what we do today. This book is intended for explorers and pioneers. It is not for those who are comfortable in today's paradigms. It is for those who search and yearn for new ways bring heart into the world of business and society. It is not for those who are comfortable living an unexamined and changeless life. It is for those who sense a thrill in the heart with the changes of each new day. Experience, not dry learning, is the heart of this book. For this reason, "Practical Exercises" are included in most of the chapters. They are experiences of things that can be known, but not told or taught. Without the exercises, your knowing will be superficial. With them, you can enter into dimensions unknown to you today. Michael W. Munn, Ph.D., heads the Gaia Center for Quality in Palo Alto, California. He provides keynotes, experiential change seminars, and business quality workshops. Strategic planning, executive development, proposal, and reengineering efforts are among the topics of his workshops.

  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Dream Life Wake Life written by Gordon G. Globus and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1987-01-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempts to understand the human condition through dreaming reach back to antiquity, especially in such classical Indian philosophical texts as the Rg Veda and the Upanisads. In a more contemporary vein, Dream Life, Wake Life continues this investigation, as it views the dream as an open window on the waking human condition. The book discusses the major twentieth-century contributions to dream theory, beginning with Freud's 1900 psychoanalytical theory of dreaming and continuing through Jung's transpersonal and Boss's existential approaches. Recent phenomenological, cognitive, and biological developments are also considered. Dream Life, Wake Life addresses human creativity as illuminated by dreaming. While Freud held a "transformative" view of dreaming in which dream life is secondhand, formed by combining memory traces of diverse past waking experiences into novel compositions, Gordon G. Globus sees the process as creative, the fundamental creative action inherent in the human condition.

Book Live Your Dream Life As You Want

Download or read book Live Your Dream Life As You Want written by Deepak Gupta and published by Inspirational Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Ludwig Wittgenstein said, 'the real question of life after death isn't whether or not it exists, but even if it does what problem this really solves.' Does life assuredly have any logic? Needless to say, yes, because if life is a logical sequence, then we can definitely think about it clearly & deeply to perceive the extreme details to live it with great intensity. Humans have been learning life lessons for ages but is the learning enough to experience an exceptional life? We feel when time is passed; nothing is left and then we experience the guilt of not having more time when we realise, we had to live life with great intensity when we were learning & chasing the life lessons but what we were really doing; attached, crying and mourning over the things, events and people. Remember, you can think great but great thinking doesn't change the absolute truth. We can push truth a little ahead but can't entirely disappear it from our lives forever. Do you want the best life or the life you heartily want? Most people are confused on what they really want! Why I'm saying this is because your dream life is hidden in what you really seek, not in what is best. Do you want to understand where your dream life is hidden? Is really something missing in our lives? Suppose we are on the death bed and are taking the last breaths of our lives, what would we really care? Do you know, what people are scared of death? How You Can Actually Accept your Life! Do we really need to have a lot of money to become peaceful? Can only money give us the best pleasure in this world? What if we realise this fast and live our lives as we actually dream of? How to Discover the Absolute Truth! Will you ever get your time back even after the realization? Are you really happy with what you are doing even if you are getting billions from it? Will you choose it for your last day? Will the satisfaction hit us the same when we reach the place we want to be? Are you living your life on your own terms without hurting anyone? How you can fulfil yourself as a True Soul. How Often do You Love Yourself? How much you are truly living for your own soul. What's the cost of peace? What's the cost of being kind? What's the cost of being in love? How to find the universal or absolute truth for life. What is your dream life exactly? Ask yourself! What are your end desires? The body knows intelligence and satisfaction but the soul understands energy, emotions, truth and vibes. What you are ignoring or healing temporarily today, will surely attack you tomorrow with more intensity and pain. What if I say, if you constantly seek nothing and undertake what is right, you can get your dream life soon. Nothing is far behind and nothing is too ahead. We all are on our time. There's no race. If you don't love climbing, you will fall soon from the edges. Extreme failures can be accepted in the work you truly worship.

Book The Bardo of Waking Life

Download or read book The Bardo of Waking Life written by Richard Grossinger and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An avant garde set of improvisational essays, Richard Grossinger’s The Bardo of Waking Life is a meditation on the Tibetan Buddhist bardo realm which, in popular culture, is viewed as the bridge between lives, the state people enter after death and before rebirth. This book examines waking life and its history and language as if it were a bardo state rather than ultimate reality, and thus seeks a context for life (and dreams), even as it addresses more "mundane issues" including genetic theory, the war in Iraq and George W. Bush's presidency, North Korea, advertising, global warming, Prison Industrial Culture, childhood trauma, even country western music. Written with playfulness and precision, Bardo takes a new, probing approach to all the important questions of creation, destruction, and existence. In these intellectual field notes, Grossinger proves thematically fearless as he crosses quantum mechanics with totemic hexes and draws transcendental insight from the ephemeral space-time we call daily life. If, as Tibetan cosmology holds true, all conditional realms are bardos, then the state we all share is nothing less than the bardo of waking life.
