Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Art of Lope De Vega: Together With La Dama Boba The large amount which Lope de Vega wrote for the stage manifestly demands a voluminous study of his art to do him full justice. The limited essay here presented may consequently be considered inadequate, and many points which could or ought to be included will be missed. Of that I am aware. But within the confined scope of this attempt my object became twofold: first, to indicate by brief hints along what lines a more detailed investigation could be instituted by someone better fitted than myself, and second, to have, at a future date, some justification for continuing an examination of the many items of interest which Lope constantly suggests. I have refrained from comparing the great Spaniard with other master writers for the theatre, for the obvious reason that it seemed to me more important to outline first an objective presentation of the material derived from Lope himself. Comparative studies in literature are futile and unprofitable to the reader who is not well acquainted with all the elements compared. Moreover, comparisons frequently lead to unjust conclusions whenever they attempt to prove that one writer is greater than another instead of analyzing in an unbiased manner how their delineation and interpretation of life are related. The offhand assertion is frequently to be met with that Moliere and Shakespeare are much greater than Lope de Vega, and yet the writers of such statements too often repeat merely a traditional catch phrase; they do not prepare the ground by adding a just and indispensable picture of the economic and social background which accounts for much that is unique in Lope de Vega's art. The most satisfactory studies of Aristophanes, Shakespeare, Moliere and other master playwrights are those based on direct objective analysis of their productions, and the principles or formula of their art. With these before us, a comparison may profitably be instituted which will further illuminate their methods of composition or reveal the extent to which they held a mirror up to the form of society in which they moved. Book The Golden Age Comedia

Download or read book The Golden Age Comedia written by Charles Ganelin and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the groundbreaking Spanish scholarship and editions of earlier generations and relying on research conducted in Spanish archives, this pioneering group of English-speaking scholars offers a new treatment of familiar material. The editors yoke together widely varying critical practices, including incisive New Critical readings and far-reaching explorations that draw on the most current European critical thought. In addition to these more strictly literary studies, there are interdisciplinary essays focusing on seventeenth- and twentieth-century reception and the social makeup of the comedia audience. The whole thus presents a balanced picture of the many ways in which the comedia can be viewed, and the contributors complement each other's work in often surprising ways, illuminating the same corpus from a number of perspectives.

Book What is Authorial Philology

Download or read book What is Authorial Philology written by Paola Italia and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stark departure from traditional philology, What is Authorial Philology? is the first comprehensive treatment of authorial philology as a discipline in its own right. It provides readers with an excellent introduction to the theory and practice of editing ‘authorial texts’ alongside an exploration of authorial philology in its cultural and conceptual architecture. The originality and distinction of this work lies in its clear systematization of a discipline whose autonomous status has only recently been recognised (at least in Italy), though its roots may extend back as far as Giorgio Pasquali. This pioneering volume offers both a methodical set of instructions on how to read critical editions, and a wide range of practical examples, expanding upon the conceptual and methodological apparatus laid out in the first two chapters. By presenting a thorough account of the historical and theoretical framework through which authorial philology developed, Paola Italia and Giulia Raboni successfully reconceptualize the authorial text as an ever-changing organism, subject to alteration and modification. What is Authorial Philology? will be of great didactic value to students and researchers alike, providing readers with a fuller understanding of the rationale behind different editing practices, and addressing both traditional and newer methods such as the use of the digital medium and its implications. Spanning the whole Italian tradition from Petrarch to Carlo Emilio Gadda, this ground-breaking volume provokes us to consider important questions concerning a text’s dynamism, the extent to which an author is ‘agentive’, and, most crucially, about the very nature of what we read.

Book excerpt: * Provides a deeper, long-term understanding of the nation and its people * Designed to supplement the "usual suspect" guide books A guidebook can show you where to go, a phrasebook what to say when you get there. Only Speak the Culture: Spain will lead you to the nation's soul. Spain boasts a rich and sometimes misunderstood culture, itself infused with the influences of other great and distant civilizations. Spanish life, language and culture in its widest sense is a major force of growing influence. How many outside it understand its origins and significance? Through exploring the people, the movements and the lifestyles that have shaped the Spanish experience, you will come to an intimate understanding of Spain and the Spanish. There are many travel guides and manuals on living in Spain. Speak the Culture: Spain is different: a superbly designed, informed and entertaining insight into Spanish life and culture and who the Spanish really are. For new residents, business travelers, holidaymakers, students and lovers of Spain everywhere, Speak the Culture: Spain is an engaging companion and guide to an enviably rich civilization at the heart of Europe. Excerpt "As you might expect Spain's traditional vernacular architecture isn't easily pigeonholed; regionalism generates marked variation. Available building materials and, more significantly, climate have always dictated how people build their houses or outbuildings. The Spaniards' approach to living arrangements is more easily summed up. They're nothing if not sociable; while northern Europeans anxiously section off their own plot of terra firma, in Spain they seem to enjoy living on top of each other, clustered in apartments and houses around the plaza mayor. It's not like they're short of space either--a population density of around 85 per sq km is one of the lowest in Europe."
