Book Late Colonial Sublime

Download or read book Late Colonial Sublime written by G. S. Sahota and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking cues from Walter Benjamin’s fragmentary writings on literary-historical method, Late Colonial Sublime reconstellates the dialectic of Enlightenment across a wide imperial geography, with special focus on the fashioning of neo-epics in Hindi and Urdu literary cultures in British India. Working through the limits of both Marxism and postcolonial critique, this book forges an innovative approach to the question of late romanticism and grounds categories such as the sublime within the dynamic of commodification. While G. S. Sahota takes canonical European critics such as Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer to the outskirts of empire, he reads Indian writers such as Muhammad Iqbal and Jayashankar Prasad in light of the expansion of instrumental rationality and the neotraditional critiques of the West it spurred at the onset of decolonization. By bringing together distinct literary canons—both metropolitan and colonial, hegemonic and subaltern, Western and Eastern, all of which took shape upon the common realities of imperial capitalism—Late Colonial Sublime takes an original dialectical approach. It experiments with fragments, parallaxes, and constellational form to explore the aporias of modernity as well as the possible futures they may signal in our midst. A bold intervention into contemporary debates that synthesizes a wealth of sources, this book will interest readers and scholars in world literature, critical theory, postcolonial criticism, and South Asian studies.

In a lonely valley called the Sink, four people prepare for a quiet evening. Then in his orchard, Murray Jaccob sees a moving shadow. Across the swamp, his neighbour Ronnie watches her lover leave and feels her baby roll inside her. And on the verandah of the Stubbses' house, a small dog is torn screaming from its leash by something unseen. Nothing will ever be the same again. ‘Hair-raising vision . . . the pulse quickens, the spine chills.’ Weekend Australian 'A brooding story . . . tense and intense, at once a suspense thriller and a moral fable of a creature flung up from the deepest recesses of the mind . . . Like black glass, the novel throws back reflections of our own image.' The Age ‘This is Winton at his most disciplined, most distilled – it’s an unforgettable story, told with the simplicity that only a consummate artist can achieve.’ Sun Herald ‘You won’t be able to put it down.’ The Advertiser (Adelaide)

Book Resounding International Relations

Download or read book Resounding International Relations written by M.I. Franklin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a provocative area of inquiry for critical theory and research into world politics and popular culture: music. Not just because political science barely engages with anything musical, but also because it is clear that many opportunities for critical scholarship and reflection on global politics and economics are present in the spaces and relationships created by organized sound. It is easy to focus on the textual elements of music, but there is more at stake than just the words. Critical reflection on the intersections between music and politics also need to take into account the visceral and non-verbal elements such as counterpoint and harmony, polyphony and dissonance, noise, rhymes, rhythms, performance and the visual/aural dimensions to music-making.

Book The Rhetoric of Violence

Download or read book The Rhetoric of Violence written by Kamal Abdel-Malek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the urgent need to develop understandings of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the light of the current situation in the Middle East, the role of violence and reconciliation in Palestinian and Israeli literature and film has received only brief treatment. This book is intended to fill that void; that is to explore how Israelis and Palestinians view and depict themselves and each other in situations that lead to either violence or reconciliation, and the ways in which both parties define themselves in relation to one another. The book examines selected Palestinian and Israeli literary works and a small number of films and their tacit assumptions about Israeli Jews. It will attempt to look at, among other questions a) is violence perceived as a means of empowerment, b) is there connection between imaginary violence in literature and actual violence, and what is the nature of the association between creative writers and violence? (eg. popular writer Ghassan Kanafani who is also a spokesman for the violent PFLP).
