Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without minimizing the validity of the social, political, and ecclesiastical approaches to this field of study, Yuille affirms that the essence of Puritanism is found in its spirituality. He demonstrates this by turning to a relatively unknown Puritan, George Swinnock (1627-1673). At the root of Swinnock's spirituality was his concept of fear of God as the proper ordering of the soul's faculties after the image of God. This concept is pivotal to Swinnock's spirituality, because he viewed it as the Christian's true principles of practice. Yuille shows the prevalence of this paradigm among Swinnock's fellow Puritans, and sets it in a historical tradition extending back to Augustine through Calvin.

Book The Inner Sanctum of Puritan Piety

Download or read book The Inner Sanctum of Puritan Piety written by J. Stephen Yuille and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Inner Sanctum of Puritan Piety," J. Stephen Yuille demonstrates how the doctrine of the believer's union with Christ lies at the heart of the Puritan pursuit of godliness. He analyzes the whole corpus of Flavel's writings, showing how this mystical union is set upon the backdrop of God's covenant of redemption and established on the basis of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Chapters on the nature and acts of this union help readers gain a better understanding of what this union is, while chapters on the blessings, fruit, suffering, evidence, joy, practice, and hope associated with this union, show more fully the experiential direction of Flavel's approach to theology. Table of Contents: The Covenant of Redemption The Basis of Union with Christ The Nature of Union with Christ The Act of Union with Christ The Blessings of Union with Christ The Fruit of Union with Christ The Evidence of Union with Christ The Suffering of Union with Christ The Joy of Union with Christ The Practice of Union with Christ The Hope of Union with Christ

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: ment to the truth, There is no subject, either of di- yine or human learning, on which some have not written weakly, foolishly, or erroneously; but that ought not to excite any aversion to the doctrine itself which hath been perverted or abused. I pray that God may enable me to write upon this interesting subject, in a clear, intelligible, and convincing manner; to support the truth from the evidence of Scripture and reason; to resolve, in a satisfying manner, any objections that may seem to lie against it; but, above all, to carry it home with a persuasive force upon the conscience and heart. I contend for no phrases of man's invention, but for such as I find in the Holy Scriptures; from these I am resolved, through the grace of God, never lo depart. And in the mean time I adopt the words of the eminent and useful Dr. Doddridge; If this doctrine, in one form or another, be generally taught by my brethren in the ministry, I rejoice in it for their own sakes, as well as for that of the people who are under their care. The plan of the following treatise is this: I. To make some general observations upon the metaphor used by the apostle John, Except a man be born again; and the same, or similar expressions, to be found in other parts of the word of God. II. To show wherein this change doth properly and directly consist, together with some of its principal evidences and effects. III. To show by what steps, or by what means, it is usually brought about. IV. In the last place to improve the subject by a few practical addresses to persons of different characters. CHAPTER I. Some general observations on the metaphor used by the apostle John, Except a man be born again, and the same or limilar expressions, to be found in other parts of the word of God. It ...

Book A Treatise on Regeneration

Download or read book A Treatise on Regeneration written by Peter van Mastricht and published by Soli Deo Gloria Ministries. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus said that people must be "born again," and without that occurring they could not enter the kingdom of God. Thus, the new birth, or regeneration, is a thing of great importance. But is regeneration the result of faith, or is it the cause of faith? And what part does the human will play in this eternally significant event? These are the questions that Van Mastricht answers in this book, which contains a useful introduction by Brandon Withrow.
