Book excerpt: John Thomas Rourke, ex-CIA Covert Operations Officer, weapons expert, and survival authority, is pursuing the trail of his wife and children from whom he was separated when World War III began. As he sets out from his retreat, he meets a beautiful woman scientist, who has learned that the nuclear bombing on the Night of the War has created an artificial fault line. Within days, perhaps hours, it will cause one of the most massive quakes in history—separating the Florida peninsula from the U.S. mainland. Rourke must postpone the search for his family in order to reach Army intelligence and begin the evacuation of Florida. He must also find young Paul Rubenstein who has gone there to learn if by some miracle his parents had survived The War. Communist Cuban troops, Soviet-Cuban rivalry, a traitor in the inner circle of U.S. II and natural disaster of blood-chilling magnitude block Rourke's way. But he must go on—he is The Survivalist.
Download or read book Doomsayer Prince written by S Nielsen, Rune and published by 971633. This book was released on 2020-07-11 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT THEY FORESEE WILL SHATTER THIS AGE - This is the first book in The Artifact War series by Rune S. Nielsen. Featuring intelligent, nuanced characters in a lushly drawn, intricate, and action-packed world, it presents a fresh take on magical systems and magic's impact on power dynamics in society. THE PLOT: In his vision, colossal artifacts stride across his homeland, destroying everything in their path. In a desperate attempt to save his home, Mage Prince Phytiax heads to the wild north in search of allies. On his journey, his magical powers become damaged at the worst possible time, and his destined allies need to be saved before they can help him: Pino, the weakest Mage of all time and wielder of a mysterious artifact sword; Emilai, a kidnapped noble woman-turned Witch to fight her captors; and Cordin, an old Light Master wanted for murder, but dead-set on getting his life back. With the brutal and mysterious force invading and destabilizing the kingdoms around them, will his potential allies help or hinder him? And even if they save their homelands, the price might be worse than they ever imagined. WHAT THE READERS SAY: One reader called it, "A fresh take on the fantasy genre." It's always interesting to hear what readers think. Everyone I talked to about the Doomsayer Prince insist, that it's very much its own thing-and hard to compare with other fantasy they read, listen to, or watch. The readers do tell me they find that the characters act more intelligently than in most other fantasy. That they had fun reading it, and that they appreciate the immersive and epic world-building which makes you feel like you are in a real place. When I keep pestering a reader to tell me what other works of fantasy, they think the Doomsayer Prince reminds them of the most, they hesitate-and then give me vastly different answers. One told me the way I use historical details reminded her of the works of the acclaimed author Guy Gavriel Kay. I'm not sure if I agree, but still that is extremely high praise. Others tell me the beginning reminds them of Robin Hobb's Farseer Triology, because I introduce a completely new kind of magic and the first few chapters take place among royalty. Though these similarities are in no way intentional, I do appreciate the comparison. Others say the closest thing is Avatar: The Last Airbender, Assassin's Creed, or other movies, games, or novels that I have not explored all that much. I'm sure they are all right.

Download or read book Journeys East written by Harry Oldmeadow and published by World Wisdom, Inc. This book was released on 2004 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to treat the impact of religious, philosophical and psychological traditions of the East on Western intellectuals, artists, travellers and spiritual seekers in the twentieth century. Addressed to both general readers and scholars of religion, it is especially valuable for its penetrating and inter-religious analysis of two of the most compelling themes now facing the world: the emergence of cross-cultural religious understanding of the natural order and ecological crisis and the metaphysical basis for both the formal diversity and essential unity of religious traditions of both East and West. The West has long romanticized the "mysterious" East, but it has, also, judged its traditions as "uncivilized." Our notions about Eastern spirituality have been formed by a succession of travellers, scientists, artists, intellectuals, poets, philosophers and missionaries, as well as by Eastern travellers who have spent time in the West. This book helps us to recognize the influence of Eastern ideas upon modern Western thought by tracing the history of engagements between East and West up until the present day. It concludes with a section that helps us to perceive the timeless value of the many Eastern contributions to the West's current intellectual and spiritual state.

Download or read book Journey Iii Return to Earth written by F. Thomas Warren and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-08-29 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From "The Day the Earth Stood Still" to "War of the Worlds" and all the similar attempts to portray alien visitors to our world, the wonder of this genre will continue unabated. "ET" appealed to the wonder in all of us for things out there. "Ghost" spoke to the hope we all have for life after death, the concomitant desire that love conquers all and that sinners ultimately pay. Any message intended by "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" was unfulfilled in the wonderment and wizardry of the overpowering special effects. The portrayal of extraterrestrials in movies and television has either been the evil invaders or the mysterious entities, too esoteric for us to interface with. Envision in your mind such repeat visitors that are real, with definite purpose, who reach out to Earth's common man and woman in fulfilling that purpose. By so doing, such a visit would be similar to that of an intelligent mankind's visit to other worlds. Envision such a purpose that regales the heart in explaining the soul and its possibilities, when corporeal life is no more. Such a story is "Journey III: Return to Earth." "Journey III" set in the world events of 1980 will appeal to the Everyman's dream-the dream to participate in the adventure and hope that lives in each of us. Hang on.
Download or read book Journey Celebrating the Journey Prize written by Various and published by Random House. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark special edition celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Journey Prize. Since its inception in 1989, the Journey Prize anthology has been widely celebrated for introducing readers to a who’s-who of up-and-coming Canadian literary voices, many of whom have gone on to become some of our most beloved writers. This special thirty-fifth-anniversary edition of Canada’s most prestigious annual fiction anthology gathers thirty-one timeless stories from throughout the prize’s history—some contemporary classics, some hidden gems—as chosen by two modern masters of the short story, Souvankham Thammavongsa and Alexander MacLeod, who are themselves previous Journey Prize contributors. After her Olympic ski-jumper husband lifts off but never comes down, a woman counters the world’s doubts with her own leap of faith. A daughter reflects on the simple ritual she shared with her father—and the moment when her unconditional love for him was called into question. An Indigenous Elder recounts an alternative creation story of Ah-damn and Evening to a trio of anthropologists. After months of trying to sell the worthless sports card collection his no-good father left behind, a boy is unprepared for a bizarre encounter with the “pile of human being” who wants to buy a card to complete his collection. A mother and child contend with the strange after-effects of an unusual multi-course meal. Infighting, blatant favouritism, and judging irregularities mar a living-room beauty pageant as four sisters vie for the title of Miss Canada. A carpet collector reimagines his family’s fractured history by weaving new tapestries to tell their stories. The last words of a fifty-year-old pet parakeet leads to the first in a series of unfortunate events. Marvellously eclectic, constantly surprising, and full of vibrant life, these glittering stories speak to the power of the short story and the extraordinary impact the Journey Prize continues to make on Canadian literature. Journey is a gift for readers and writers alike. Featuring an introduction by the editors, and stories by André Alexis, Michael Christie, Alicia Elliott, Jessica Grant, Kevin Hardcastle, Angélique Lalonde, Annabel Lyon, Thomas King, Téa Mutonji, Saleema Nawaz, Heather O'Neill, Eden Robinson, Naben Ruthnum, and Madeleine Thien, among others.

This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gripping and superb. This book will steal the night from you." —Laurence Gonzales, author of Deep Survival On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp. The dogs were gone. Now Mawson himself plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. Mawson was sometimes reduced to crawling, and one night he discovered that the soles of his feet had completely detached from the flesh beneath. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizably skeletal, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, "Which one are you?" This thrilling and almost unbelievable account establishes Mawson in his rightful place as one of the greatest polar explorers and expedition leaders. It is illustrated by a trove of Frank Hurley’s famous Antarctic photographs, many never before published in the United States.
