Book excerpt: DIVDIVWhen an antipornography activist dies after a provocative speech, Pam Nilsen dives headlong into Seattle’s feminist community to uncover a murderer/divDIV The Seattle Conference on Sexuality is a lightning rod for controversy, with big politics and even bigger personalities descending on the city to discuss issues ranging from pornography to violence against women. Loie Marsh is one such personality, an outspoken critic of porn slated to speak on a panel about the subject. But before she can take her place on stage, Loie is found dead, strangled with a dog collar./divDIV Pam Nilsen, the co-owner of a progressive printing collective with significant connections in Seattle’s activist community, is uniquely positioned to investigate the murder. Suspects include a member of Christians Against Pornography, an S/M advocate who owned the dog collar used to commit the murder, a producer of erotic lesbian videos, and Loie’s ex-husband—not to mention her resentful ex-lover. It’s an unconventional whodunit, but one that Pam is more than ready to take on./divDIV The Dog Collar Murders is the final book in the Pam Nilsen Mystery trilogy, which begins with Murder in the Collective and Sisters of the Road./divDIV/div/div

Book excerpt: The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life. Now with photos and new material. Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans. John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same. Marley grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, and stole women's undergarments. Obedience school did no good -- Marley was expelled. But just as Marley joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley remained a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms. Marley & Me is John Grogan's funny, unforgettable tribute to this wonderful, wildly neurotic Lab and the meaning he brought to their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seattle printing collective owner Pam Nilsen is on the case when a member of the group turns up dead before a controversial merger Pam Nilsen and her twin sister, Penny, inherited Best Printing four years ago when their parents died in a car crash. Unwilling to sell their family legacy, the sisters turned it into a collective run by a cadre of activists whose arguments over the business can be just as impassioned as their support for progressive causes. But internal divisions at the collective pale in comparison to those between Seattle typesetters B. Violet and Moby Dick—once a single company that has since broken apart into an all-female (and lesbian-run) company, and an all-male (and quickly bankrupt) operation. Shortly after Best Printing and B. Violet begin discussing a merger, the offices of the typesetter are ransacked, one of their members nowhere to be found. Then an employee of Best Printing is found murdered. It appears as if someone will stop at nothing—not even murder—to prevent the merger. And it’s up to Pam to get to the bottom of this deadly turn of events before the killer strikes again. Murder in the Collective is the first book in the Pam Nilsen Mystery trilogy, which continues with Sisters of the Road and The Dog Collar Murders.

Book Feminism in Women s Detective Fiction

Download or read book Feminism in Women s Detective Fiction written by Glenwood Irons and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1995-12-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Names such as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and Sam Spade are perhaps better known than the names of the authors who created them. The woman detective has also had worldwide appeal; yet, with the exception of Christie's Miss Marple, the names of female detectives and their authors have only recently gained wide attention through the popularity of Marcia Muller, Sue Grafton, and Sara Paretsky. The essays in this collection grapple with a wide range of issues important to the female sleuth – the most important, perhaps, being the oft-heard challenge to her suitability for the job. Not surprisingly, gender issues are the main focus of all the essays; indeed, in detective novels with a woman protagonist, these issues are often right at the surface. Some of the papers see the female sleuth as an important force in popular fiction, but many also challenge the notion that the woman detective is a positive model for feminists. They argue that fictional female sleuths have lost the `otherness' that a feminine approach to the genre should encourage. Collectively, the essays also reveal the differences between British and American perspectives on the woman detective.

Book The Pretty Windows Murder The murder of George Wilson 8th September 1963

Download or read book The Pretty Windows Murder The murder of George Wilson 8th September 1963 written by Peter Brooks and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1963 George Wilson, the landlord of the Fox and Grapes public house in Sneinton, Nottingham was brutally stabbed to death outside his pub. The pub was known to all of the citizens of Nottingham as "The Pretty Windows" and this name became synonymous with one of Nottingham's most vicious and frenzied murders. George Wilson's attacker was never brought to justice. This book charts a brief history of Sneinton and the part that the pub played, and still plays, in the local community. It uses contemporary newspaper reports to examine the murder, and explores the possible links to other murders committed in the same area in the years immediately prior to and just after 1963.
