Book The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ written by H. R. Mackintosh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ It may not be unnecessary to inform the reader that the present book is designed chiefly as a student's manual, which, with a fair measure of completeness, should cover the whole field of Christology. This so far excuses two of its more prominent features: the large space given to historical narration, and a certain frequency of allusion to modern literature. My purpose was not simply to formulate the results reached by a single mind - results, as I give fair warning, in no sense original or extraordinary - but also to furnish what might be considered a competent guide to the best recent discussion, in this country and Germany. If these pages should have helped any student to take his bearings in the world of Christological thought, or suggested fruitful lines of new inquiry, their object will have been fully achieved. Nothing in the book, it is probable, may seem so indefensible as the more or less speculative tone of the concluding chapters. Some, I fear, will judge that, all protestations notwithstanding, I have added one more to the vain attempts to explain in detail how God became, for our redemption, incarnate in the person of Jesus Christ. I am conscious that a problem of method is indicated here on which opinions are widely divergent, and are likely to remain so. To abstain from all efforts to reach a constructive synthesis of the data which faith apprehends would, as is known, have been in harmony with well-marked and ably championed tendencies of our time. This built on two considerations - First, The nature of that Humanity which was taken by Christ Secondly, His manner of taking it. I. Nature shows itself by continuity of type in animals and in men. Book The Christian Doctrine of God Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of God Classic Reprint written by William Newton Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God Christianity is a doctrine Of God and a life in God. It is scarcely more; for its great peculiarity is its proclamation Of a work of gracious help from God to man, performed because God is what he is, and all its substance beyond this consists in the unfolding Of what it means, in experience and thought, that God is such a Being as Jesus Christ makes known. Christianity is religion with such a God, and Christian theology is the doctrine of such a God, and of that which follows from his being. Book Jesus Christ and the Christian Character Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jesus Christ and the Christian Character Classic Reprint written by Francis Greenwood Peabody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Christian Character When one turns with this new problem to the Gospels, he discovers with fresh surprise the ex traordinary richness and variety of the teaching of Jesus. Each period in history goes with its question to the simple record, and finds an an swer which seems written to meet the special problem of the time. In an age of theology the Gospels were a source of theological doctrine; in an age of ecclesiasticism they fortified the Church; in an age of emotionalism they kindled the flame of piety. The same adaptability is now discovered once more by the age of the Social Question. As others have found in the teaching of Jesus the key Of doctrine or organization or religious experience, so there is now delivered by the same teaching to the mind of the present age a key of the Social Question. Remote from the condition of the modern world as was the life of Jesus, and pri marily directed as was his teaching, not to social but to spiritual ends, he has much to say of social duty. His ethics are not individualist, atomic, a doctrine of the single soul; but organic, social, a doctrine Of the common life. Book Jesus Christ God God and Man Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ, God God and Man The subject of the following Conferences is daily attracting increased attention in England - so justly famed for her religious feeling and strong sense, yet so distracted by divisions which contradict the authority, the object, and the work of Jesus Christ. Many minds that know not the repose of divine faith, are - timidly perhaps, but anxiously - watching this great question; requiring, not only to believe, but also, and rightly, to know why they should believe. Humbly desiring to discharge a part of the deep debt of gratitude which he owes to the author of these celebrated discourses, the translator respectfully offers them to his well-beloved country, as a guide in her present religious confusion and a support in her manifest and perplexing doubts, hoping and believing that they will be to others what they have been to him, namely, heralds of that "glorious liberty" which is the ever-blessed fruit of Catholic Christianity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rock of Our Salvation: A Treatise Respecting the Natures, Person, Offices, Work, Sufferings, and Glory, of Jesus Christ When I was a youth, in the bond of iniquity and in the gall of bitterness, I fell into distress concerning my soul. I feared I should be lost for ever. Being in the company of two Christian ladies, one of them kindly expressed the wish that my impressions might not be transient. This I understood. The other expressed the hope that Christ might yet be to me all in all. To me, whose heart was covered with a veil of unbelief, her words were as the speech of a barbarian. Yet they made an impression. From them I learned that some persons knew a secret hidden from me; and I longed to learn what it was. It is about the relation between Jesus and God: the Father personally in the Son, and the Son personally in the Father. Central to this relation is the atoning sacrifice of Jesus upon the Cross. Throughout, without resorting to technical theological terms, and using arguments of persuasive beauty closely related to Christian experience, the author presents the evangelical heart of the historical creeds. Here is a simple yet profound little book, where people can find great nourishment for Christian belief and experience in the world today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrines and Difficulties of the Christian Faith Contemplated From the Standing Ground Afforded by the Catholic Doctrine of the Being of Our Lord Jesus Christ This then is the idea of the following course of Lectures; and I beseech the reader - and the critics - to consider them according to their idea, and so only. The subjects of the several Lectures have no party character; they are not discussed in support of any party views; they are treated, as in the sight of God, with reference to the spiritual need of those - whether High Church, Low Church, or to whatever school they may fancy themselves to belong - who may have been led by sad experi ence to fear, lest the sun of their souls should be hidden from them by any of the mists and clouds which belong to an intellectual age. By such persons I confidently trust that I shall not be misunderstood; and to them I heartily commend the Lectures, with the conviction, that I shall have carried out the intention of the Founder in order ing them to be printed, if the vision of Jesus Christ shall have been made clearer to any one doubting soul. Book A Compend of Christian Divinity Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Compend of Christian Divinity Classic Reprint written by Sylvanus Cobb, Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compend of Christian Divinity In the preparation of this work for the public, we are governed by a desire for the promotion of Christian knowledge and virtue. Though all knowledge is important in its place, and there are discoveries of sublime moral and scientific truths, from a study of the nature and fitness of things, yet nothing has such power to enlarge, elevate, purify and bless the human mind, as the knowledge and love of revealed religion. This work is a desideratum in the Universalist public. We have many able Theological productions; but they are devoted respectively to some particular point or points of the general system of Christian doctrines, no one book comprising a complete compend or body of divinity. We often meet with inquirers after truth, who ask our reference to a book, from which they can obtain a knowledge of our views of Christianity as a whole, embracing all its essential principles. To such a book we have not been able to refer them. The different writers have accomplished their respective designs; but no one, of whom we know, has grasped so extensive a plan. This is the plan undertaken by the writer of the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Man It is hardly necessary to remind the reader that almost every section and subsection of this book touches con troversial points, and that no two writers will agree on every detail of such a subject as this. I have spared no pains to secure accuracy of fact, but am very conscious, in other respects, of the limitations of this volume; some of these are due to the necessary limits of space, though far more to the demands the subject makes on both theological learning and Christian experience.
