Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Election and Its Connection With the General of Christianity: Illustrated From Many Parts of Parts of Scripture, and Especially From the Epistle to the Romans The first half of the book was written under the disadvantage of frequent interruptions, which I am sensible have very often broken the thread of thought and interest; and with regard to the entire work, it has happened, chiefly I confess from my own fault, that every sheet was printed as soon as it was writ ten, so that I never saw it, nor could judge of it, as a whole, until the last sheet came from the press. From these causes have proceeded defects in the arrangement, and frequent repetitions, besides other faults, which are now beyond the reach of correction, and which I feel, must hang a drag on many parts of the book. In the commencement of the Bible, Adam is set before us as seeking and finding enjoyment without having passed through death; but as we follow him in his course onwards, we find that his path terminates in ruin and corruption. Then Jesus is set before us, doing not his own will, but dying to himself, and consenting to pass through death; and as we follow him we find that his termination is immortal glory. And, lest any should put away these plain lessons by saying that Adam's history was a solitary example, and not of general application, and that it might be possible to arrive at the blessed conclusion of the second Adam by the easy way of the first, the veil of futurity is rent for their instruction, and it is declared to them by the fatal catastrophe of an innumerable multitude, placed exactly in the circumstances which they are wishing for themselves, that there is salvation in no other way--that there is no secure standing for man except in the willing death of Jesus Christ. I believe that the original condition of man, the fall, and the redemption, are only so many consecutive distinct steps in that mighty plan which is now in progress, and which may continue to be so for ever, by which God would train up a creature for real participation in his own holy and blessed nature. I cannot conceive that a creature such as man will be when that purpose is accomplished, could have been made at once--in other words, that such a production is within the province of creative power. I believe that holiness is an acquirement which can only be made by the co-operation of the creature's own personal will; it is a habit and not a mere capacity, and thus belongs not to the first creation, but to the second, which requires the consent of the...

Book Christ s Sinful Flesh

Download or read book Christ s Sinful Flesh written by Byung Sun Lee and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ’s Sinful Flesh explores the life and theology of Edward Irving, a nineteenth-century Scottish preacher and theologian, focusing on his theological framework in the perspective of his understanding of Christ’s humanity. Irving is especially known for his teachings regarding the return of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, pre-millennialism, and his distinct Christology. Most scholarly interpretations of Irving have focused on particular aspects of his thought, such as his teachings on the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, his millenarianism, or his understanding of Christology. This book provides a new interpretation of Irving’s contributions to developments in nineteenth-century theology within the English-speaking world, examining the interrelationship of his theological ideas and exploring the development of them within the context of his life. The book offers a fascinating historical account of Irving’s ministry and theology, bringing in the backdrop of his theological dissident companions and contemporary Romanticism, coupled with the tension between his Presbyterianism and his desire of pursuing the truth. Christ’s Sinful Flesh shows that Irving’s theological views, including his views on the gifts of the Spirit and his millennialism, formed a coherent system, which focused on his doctrine of Christ, and more particularly on his belief that Christ had taken on a fully human nature, including the propensity to sin. Only by sharing fully in the human condition with its “sinful flesh” concerning all temptations, Irving believed, could Christ become the true reconciler of God and humanity and a true exemplar of godly living for humankind. This interesting study is a rare exception in the research of Irving, in that it shows the origin of Irving’s Christology and his methodology. Its description of Irving’s theological development in accordance with the critical moments in his life provides the reader with not only a more vivid interpretation of Irving’s life and theology, but also shows the coherence of the preacher’s theological framework.
