Book Differences between Old and New School Presbyterians

Download or read book Differences between Old and New School Presbyterians written by Lewis Cheeseman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-06-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After increasing theological and institutional tensions, a schism occurred in 1837 within the Presbyterian church between the Old and New schools, resulting in a thirty-year national division of the church. From the Introduction: In the following work, the Rev. Mr. Cheeseman has designed to give a brief account of those doctrinal differences which separate Presbyterians of the Old and New School. . . . I think Mr. Cheeseman has presented his subject in a manner which appeals to the pious feelings, to the Christian emotions of every renewed heart. . . . There is an application of the great principles of the gospel as he passes along, a flow of devotion, a kindling of the religious sensibilities, which must lead those who commence its perusal to the conclusion of the work. He makes the practical power of the doctrines of grace and redemption, so manifest, that the eyes of all unprejudiced persons can hardly fail to be opened, and if I mistake not, there will be left upon the mind of every reader, an impression of the importance of these great truths for which we stand in a day of darkness and rebuke.

Book Presbyterianism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Presbyterianism Classic Reprint written by John Macpherson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presbyterianism It will be seen that the distinction to which we have been referring is one which turns purely upon questions of church polity. Some of these indeed may be closely associated with points of doctrine, and in many cases it will be found that prin ciples of doctrine and polity easily act and react on one another Yet in the threefold distribution just referred to, we shall find churches under all the three, not only thoroughly agreed on certain fundamental doctrinal truths, but also accepting the same or similar Confessions. For example, Calvinists in doctrine may be found quite consistently placing themselves under a Prelatical, or a Congregational, or a Presbyterian form of church govern ment. Arminians may be met with under any of the three divisions. There is no reason Why those entertaining Baptist views should in their church polity be Congregationalists rather than Prelatists or Presbyterians In reference purely to matters of church polity are the distinctions made to which we here refer. The difference between these three may in general terms be stated to lie in the representation which they give respectively of the parties in whom church power is vested. In Prelatical churches the clergy rule, the church courts, both inferior and superior, being purely clerical. In Congregational churches, the members of the local church rule, there being no church courts proper as distinguished from the general meeting of the congregation. In Presbyterian churches, the representatives of the people rule in church courts variously graduated, and having'their membership drawn from both the clerical and the lay elements, ruling elders sitting with ministers of the Word in the exercise of the govern ment of the church. Charles A. Briggs, D. D I now invite the attention Of the Court to the Scripture cited which the statements set forth in the specifications contradict. TO the law and the testimony, Isaiah viii. 20, if they (whether it be Church or Reason) speak not according to this word it is because there is no light in them. It is due to Dr. Briggs to quote the words of the Response by which he so summarily dis misses this citation.
