Book excerpt: Scotland has long been known for its emphasis upon an educated clergy, yet little serious historical attention has been given to how this was actually fostered. This book begins to fill that gap. While a thoroughly historical study in Scottish church history and historical theology, the book also serves as a springboard for reflection and application to the work of theological education today with the evangelical Presbyterian and Reformed community.

Book The Divinity Principals in the University of Glasgow

Download or read book The Divinity Principals in the University of Glasgow written by Henry Martyn Beckwith Reid and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divinity Principals in the University of Glasgow: 1545-1654 This volume is the first instalment of an attempt to write the lives of the Professors of Divinity in Glasgow University, from Melville to Hastie. The first six were principals of the University; afterwards, the offices were practically though not formally separated, and a special Chair of Divinity alone was created. The author has thought fit to deal with the six Divinity Principals (as he ventures to style them) in a volume by themselves. Later he hopes to complete his task by recording the careers of their successors, several of whom, like David Dickson, Robert Baillie, Gilbert Burnet, James Wodrow, John Simson, along with Leechman, Macgill, John Caird and others, were men of distinct eminence in ecclesiastical and theological circles. The work is therefore by no means a history of the University. That has been written with much industry and accuracy by the late James Coutts. Book Enforcing Reformation in Ireland and Scotland 1550 1700

Download or read book Enforcing Reformation in Ireland and Scotland 1550 1700 written by Crawford Gribben and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have witnessed a growing interest in the study of the Reformation period within the three kingdoms of Britain, revolutionizing the way in which scholars think about the relationships between England, Scotland and Ireland. Nevertheless, it is a fact that the story of the British Reformation is still dominated by studies of England, an imbalance that this book will help to right. By adopting an international perspective, the essays in this volume look at the motives, methods and impact of enforcing the Protestant Reformation in Ireland and Scotland. The juxtaposition of these two countries illuminates the similarities and differences of their social and political situations while qualifying many of the conclusions of recent historical work in each country. As well as Investigating what 'reformation' meant in the early modern period, and examining its literal, rhetorical, doctrinal, moral and political implications, the volume also explores what enforcing these various reformations could involve. Taken as a whole, this volume offers a fascinating insight into how the political authorities in Scotland and Ireland attempted, with varying degrees of success, to impose Protestantism on their countries. By comparing the two situations, and placing them in the wider international picture, our understanding of European confessionalization is further enhanced.

Book When History Teaches Us Nothing Second Edition

Download or read book When History Teaches Us Nothing Second Edition written by Tim J. R. Trumper and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tim J. R. Trumper draws on his decades of historical, biblical, and theological research into the doctrine of adoption to offer a unique reflection on the Sonship debate—one with lasting implications for the Reformed tradition. Much the buzz in confessional Presbyterian circles around the turn of the millennium, the debate concerned the discipleship course developed by practical theologian John C. (“Jack”) Miller (1928–1996) and his wife Rose Marie. Whereas some attested to God’s use of Sonship in their spiritual rejuvenation, others questioned its Reformed credentials. Setting the debate, in pioneering fashion, against the backdrop of the historical theology of adoption, Trumper offers an assessment that is enlightening, evenhanded, and constructive. His fresh portrayal of the history of the Reformed tradition teaches the value of pausing before rushing to judgment, and is a reminder that the meeting of spiritual needs requires more biblical exposition not less of it. While addressing the points of debate, When History Teaches Us Nothing is, above all, a call to the church to recover the doctrine of adoption, and to the Reformed community to revive her creative orthodoxy, to recapture Scripture’s balance of the juridical and familial aspects of the faith, and to do so with grace.

Book Offering and Embracing Christ

Download or read book Offering and Embracing Christ written by John C. Biegel and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The free offer of the gospel and the relation of saving faith to assurance, justification, and repentance were central issues in the Marrow controversy of the mid-eighteenth century. In Offering and Embracing Christ, John Biegel finds an unlikely stronghold of Marrow theology in the Established Church of Scotland: John Colquhoun. Biegel demonstrates that Colquhoun’s evangelical Calvinism reflected the thought of the Marrow men on offering and embracing Christ. Foreword by Sinclair Ferguson.

Book Scottish Philosophical Theology

Download or read book Scottish Philosophical Theology written by David Fergusson and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume concentrates on the period from the beginning of the 18th century to the latter part of the 20th. It is impossible to depict a single school of philosophical theology in Scotland across three centuries, yet several strains have been identified that suggest some recurrent themes or intellectual habits. These include the following: the mutually beneficial cross-fertilisation of the disciplines of philosophy and theology; the tendency to eschew powerful philosophical systems that might threaten to imprison theological ideas; a stress on both the providential limitations and reliability of human reason; a suspicion of reductive theories of a materialist inclination; and a determination to inspect critically the proposals of theology and to place these in positive relation to other disciplines.
