Lewis felt that a reconsideration of his works' British reception was 'long overdue' back in the 1950s, and this study finally provides the first comprehensive account of how English-speaking authors read, translated, imitated, and eventually discarded Du Bartas' model for Protestant poetry. The first part shows that Du Bartas' friendship with James VI and I was key to his later popularity. Du Bartas' poetry symbolized a transnational Protestant literary culture in Huguenot France and Britain. Through James intervention, Scottish literary tastes had a significant impact in England. Later chapters assess how Sidney, Spenser, Milton, and many other poets justified writing poetic fictions in reaction to Du Bartas' austere emphasis on scriptural truth. These chapters give equal attention to how Du Bartas' example offered a route into original verse composition for male and female poets across the literate population. Du Bartas' Legacy in England and Scotland responds to recent developments in transnational and translation studies, the history of reading, women's writing, religious literature, and manuscript studies. It argues that Du Bartas' legacy deserves far greater prominence than it has previously received because it offers a richer, more democratic, and more accurate view of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English, Scottish, and French literature and religious culture.

English poets of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries frequently underlined the force of ut pictura poesis - the ancient analogy between poetry and painting - by means of ekphrases, or descriptions of works of art, and through metaphors drawn from the visual arts. The present study is concerned with various kinds of allusions and what they can tell us not only about Renaissance poets' attitudes toward the visual arts, but also about their attitudes toward their own art of representation. In their poems lies a neglected source of art criticism. Since, in her view, the language of Renaissance criticism offers our best approach to an understanding of the poetry of the period, Judith Dundas begins her book with Sir Philip Sidney and ends it with John Dryden - the two poet-critics who most clearly enunciate the importance of the analogy between poetry and painting. Between these boundaries are chapters on Shakespeare, Spenser, Chapman, Jonson, a group of seventeenth-century minor poets, and Milton. The order of the chapters is partly chronological and partly thematic - depending on the interest of particular developments in the poets' allusions to the visual arts. The illustrations that accompany the text are chosen to suggest the background of pictorial reality against which the Renaissance poets were writing. They also show the painters' response to the accomplishments of poetry that are, in themselves, a response to nature. In including illustrations, Dundas does not wish to blur the distinction between poetry and painting, since it is in their very difference of medium that the arts achieve their triumphs. These triumphs led to the debate, known as the paragone, about which art is the superior; but, as Dundas notes, the significance of this debate is that it served as a topos for discussing the relationship of art to truth.

As a colonialist leader in Virginia he and his colleagues pursued a lenient policy towards the Indians which nearly cost the colony its existence. Returning to England, and settling at Great Tew along with other poets such as William Chillingworth and Lord Falkland, he won limited favour at the Caroline court; although he was loyal to the king, and adopted a richly Laudian style for his religious verse, he was implacably opposed to the divisive and confrontational policies of the Laudian church, and became an increasingly outspoken critic of absolutist government. His last work, a translation of a Latin religious play by Hugo Grotius, was the first in a series of literary attacks by moderate Royalists on Archbishop Laud.This book, the first recent examination of his life and work, sheds new light both on an unjustly neglected figure, and on the literature of religious and political moderation prior to the Civil War. Eschewing the critical tendency to study how objects relate to human needs and desires, this work foregrounds the objects themselves, demonstrating their potential to transform their environments as they travel across time and space. Integrating early modern material theories with recent critical approaches in Actor-Network Theory and object-oriented ontology, this volume extends Aristotle’s theory of dynameos—which conceptualizes matter as potentiality—and applies it to objects featured in early modern texts such as Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, Robert Hooke’s Micrographia, and William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Individual chapters explore the dynameos of matter by examining its manifestations in particular forms: combs are inscribed with words and brushed through human hair; feathers are incorporated into garments and artwork; Prince Rupert’s glasswork drops explode; a whale becomes animated by the power of a magical bracelet; and books are drowned. These case studies highlight the potentiality matter itself possesses and that which it activates in other matter. A theorization of objects grounded in Renaissance materialist thought, Dynamic Matter examines the richness of things themselves; the larger, multiple, and changing networks in which things circulate; and the networks created by these transformative objects.
