Book The Divine Names in Genesis Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Divine Names in Genesis Classic Reprint written by John Skinner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Names in Genesis The idea of republishing the articles was first recommended to me by the weighty advice of Dr. Driver, who took a keen interest in the dis cussion up to the verge of his fatal illness. While I alone am responsible for the views expressed in the following pages, I put them forward with the greater confidence from knowing that they met with the general approval of one whose accurate and comprehensive scholarship and sound judgment are so universally recognized and es teemed. It is with a deep sense of personal loss that I here record for the last time my indebted ness to him, not merely for suggestions that have strengthened my argument at many points, but for the wise and helpful counsel and encourage ment which he was always ready to impart to fellow-workers in the field of Old Testament study. Book Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus

Download or read book Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus written by Austin Surls and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The obvious riddles and difficulties in Exod 3:13–15 and Exod 6:2–8 have attracted an overwhelming amount of attention and comment. These texts make important theological statements about the divine name YHWH and the contours of the divine character. From the enigmatic statements in Exod 3:13–15, most scholars reconstruct the original form of the name as “Yahweh,” which is thought to describe YHWH’s creative power or self-existence. Similarly, Exod 6:3 has become a classic proof-text for the Documentary Hypothesis and an indication of different aspects of God’s character as shown in history. Despite their seeming importance for “defining” the divine name, these texts are ancillary to and preparatory for the true revelation of the divine name in the book of Exodus. This book attempts to move beyond atomistic readings of individual texts and etymological studies of the divine name toward a holistic reading of the book of Exodus. Surls centers his argument around in-depth analyses of Exod 3:13–15, 6:2–8 and Exod 33:12–23 and 34:5–8. Consequently, the definitive proclamation of YHWH’s character is not given at the burning bush but in response to Moses’ later intercession (Exod 33:12–23). YHWH proclaimed his name in a formulaic manner that Israel could appropriate (Exod 34:6–7), and the Hebrew Bible quotes or alludes to this text in many genres. This demonstrates the centrality of Exod 34:6–7 to Old Testament Theology. The character of God cannot be discerned from an etymological analysis of the word yhwh but from a close study of YHWH’s deliberate ascriptions made progressively in the book of Exodus.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis: With Introduction and Notes The unexpected death of Dr Driver in 1914 has prevented any further revision of this Commentary, as he has left no materials available for the purpose. It is however worth mentioning that since the ninth edition appeared Dr Driver published a revised edition of his Introduction to the Lite rature of the Old Testament (9th Ed. 1913) and in the Addenda to that volume (pp. Xxvi - xxxiii) will be found a few notes bearing on Genesis, and particularly his last and fullest discussion of the controversy about the value of the Names of' God as a clue to the sources of the Pentateuch. He there refers with approval to articles in the Expositor by Dr Skinner, since republished in book form ('the Divine Names' in Genesis, Hodder and Stoughton and also to the Appendix in the Rev. D. C. Simpson s Pentateuchal Criticism (hodder and Stoughton, which was written at Dr Driver's suggestion and had the benefit of his revision. The ninth edition, of which this is a reprint, consequently represents the final form of this Commentary. The progress of Old Testament Criticism and of Oriental archaeological studies will doubtless modify particular statements in it, but the wide range of Dr Driver's knowledge, the accuracy of his scholarship and the sanity of his judgment cannot fail to secure a permanent value for all his work. Download or read book A New Commentary on Genesis Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Franz Delitzsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Commentary on Genesis, Vol. 2 Two solemn revelations open in ch. Xv. The second section of the life of Abraham. The narrative falls into two halves. It is impossible to regard all from beginning to end as occurring in vision. For (1) if one revelation takes place at night, or at least with a transposition to night, the other is made in the day, and indeed at eventicle, the sun being at ver. 12 about to set, and at ver. 17 actually set. And (2) the account of Abraham's believing reception of the promise of a posterity numeious as the stars of heaven ver. 6 separates what pre ceded from What follows, which though it appears from the 16x mm, 7 a, to have immediately succeeded, has yet its own special introduction. Dillmann here carries analysis even farther beyond the bounds of the discernible than Wellhausen does. The safest criterion from Gen. I. To ex. Vi., and one which must only be relinquished for cogent reasons, is the Divine names. The use of these is in both halves of ch. Xv. The same. In both mm is the prevailing one, and With it occurs once in each rm rm, to be read according to the punctuation d?sn figs, a combination of Divine names Which, thus written, is unusual. This mm ms, here twice used, gives to this historical picture in its two departments, as to the prophetic image, Isa. 1. 4 - 9, where it is four times used. Book The Babylonian and the Hebrew Genesis Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Babylonian and the Hebrew Genesis Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Zimmern and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Babylonian and the Hebrew Genesis This change has naturally had a decisive effect also upon our conception of the biblical narrative. Once it was believed that in the early chapters of the Bible we possessed the record of a divine revelation concerning the origin of the world and of mankind, delivered to Moses and by him Written down. Now we know that these chapters are rather the introduction to a great historical compilation from sources of varied dates and very varied character, which did not attain its present form until after the Babylonian Exile. As was often the case in early times this com pilation was attached to the name of a famous hero of antiquity. Book The Name of the Deity in the Pentateuch Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Name of the Deity in the Pentateuch Many have wondered why sometimes God, and sometimes lord is used to express the name of Deity, acting or speaking. Many theories have been advanced, but the simplest reason is to believe that each name in relation to the context has its own special meaning. The Hebrew word in the Bible translated God is Elohim, and Where the name lord occurs with capital letters it is the translation of the Hebrew word we call Jehovah. The following facts about these names are clearly defined. Elohim is never said to appear to anyone, except in an historical sense Gen. Xxxv. I, 7 with xxviii. And even there when the actual appearance is referred to it is Jehovah who appeared. Altars are built to Jehovah, not Elohim. The first time the name Jehovah occurs by itself is when Eve says, I have gotten a man (from) Jehovah (gen. Iv.i). Download or read book The Names of God in Holy Scripture written by Andrew Jukes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Names of God in Holy Scripture: A Revelation of His Nature and Relationships Notes of a Course of Lectures I believe, open something of the truth, which the varying Names of God, recorded in Holy Scripture, were intended to reveal to us. The subject has long occupied my thoughts. I was led to it, many years ago, by noticing the four differing Names of God in the first two verses of the ninety-first Psalm. The study of these drew me further to other titles of the same One Blessed God. The Fathers on this subject helped me but little, at least directly. They rarely refer to the teaching of the Names of God, as given in the Old Testament. What I think I most learnt from them was the lesson of our weakness; for their conflicts with the Gnostics shewed, how much there is in God and man, which in its height and depth must be beyond us, or at least unspeakable, so long as we are still in our present bodies of humiliation. And this consideration made me feel, how much we owe to God for the Names under which He has made Himself known in Scrip ture, which tell us all that we can here bear to know of Himself, His nature, and relationships.
