Book The Divine Mystery

Download or read book The Divine Mystery written by Allen Upward and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Allen Upward, better known to fame as a war correspondent, has attempted to give us "a reading of the history of Christianity down to the time of Christ," and however much we may disagree with some of his conclusions we must at least applaud the sincerity and the originality as well as the erudition of his effort. Mr. Upward finds in the dawn of Christianity a story that has been told mystically from age to age. Its words and signs are inherited from a primeval language, from prehistoric peoples, and from tales that are still the Bible of the peasant and the child. It is, he says, a recrystallization of universal fears and hopes, carried out in the crucible of a planetary heat wave, whose coming had been more or less distinctly felt by "a series of true prophets from Zoroaster to John the Baptist." Mr. Upward believes that Christ was an historical personage, but that the story of his life is an allegorical repetition of the greater story that is as old as the world it- self. To this end he collects all the threads of folklore within his reach, all the "superstitions" that perhaps are not superstitions, and that tend to show the stirrings of a higher consciousness and knowledge that culminates in the genius and the savior. If sometimes he seems to be inadequate or superficial we must remember the greatness, the almost incredible magnitude of the quarries from which he hews.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Evangelicals struggle with mysteries. Answers are sought, meanings defined, and theology put in nice, neat boxes for clarification, or simply to justify our denominational notions. As Augustine notes, we are talking about God, after all. Why is it surprising that we do not understand? If we did understand, then it would not be God. Mysteries remind us that God is bigger than our preconceived ideas about his involvement with those created in his image. Divine Mysteries: Concise and Thoughtful Ancient Biblical Wisdom addresses some of these mysteries in a provocative and succinct manner.

Book Celebrating Divine Mystery

Download or read book Celebrating Divine Mystery written by Catherine Vincie and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians are identified by their participation in liturgy. In this primer, Catherine Vincie introduces readers to current liturgical theology by providing them with the foundational themes of the field. She explains that liturgy draws us into the paschal mystery of Jesus Christ, that it should create a space in which we attempt to name toward God by employing an abundance of metaphors and images, and that the sacraments are communicated and understood through the use of symbols. Vincie is grounded in the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council. As such, Celebrating Divine Mystery seeks to draw readers into full, conscious, and active participation" in the liturgy by informing them about recent scholarship and challenging them to enter the divine mystery as informed and engaged participants. Catherine Vincie, RSHM, PhD, is professor of sacramental and liturgical theology at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. She is also author of The Role of the Assembly in Christian Initiation and many articles on initiation, Eucharist, and liturgy and justice. As a practicing liturgical musician, she is also interested in the role of the arts in past and current liturgical celebration. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Paul used language similar to the religions and cultures of his time, he had a unique understanding of the “mystery” of God. The once-hidden plan of God was revealed and fulfilled in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Saul of Tarsus experienced a fundamental change when he encountered the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus. This vision gave him new direction and purpose and profoundly changed his understanding of God’s plan for humanity. Paul often uses the phrase “in Christ” or its variations to describe this plan. Being in Christ results in transformation into Christ’s likeness of holiness and love through the indwelling Holy Spirit. Those in Christ form a new community that crosses ethnic barriers, is bound together in fellowship with the Triune God, and fulfills its purpose of holiness before him. Paul’s answer to the struggles people face is simple: when one is united with Christ by dying to the old self and committing to his supremacy, one will find victory over any force opposed to us in this world. This book explores one of the most profound claims in the New Testament that demands a response of its readers.

Book excerpt: The Divine Dance has become a classic for fans of Richard Rohr and an important book on Christian mysticism, it provides a fresh perspective for anyone studying or teaching the trinity. The Trinity is the central doctrine of Christianity, but it is still widely considered a mystery we won't ever fully understand. Should we still try to understand it, even so? If we could, how would it transform our relationship with God? In this stimulating and thought-provoking book, internationally recognised teacher Richard Rohr explores the nature of God and the paradoxical idea of the Holy Trinity as both three and one. With clear, surefooted wisdom, he encourages us to build on the early Christian understanding of the relationship between Father, Son and Spirit as a flow and dance - a Divine Dance - that we are invited to join in. An engaging, accessible look at the nature of God, The Divine Dance will challenge the way you think about the Trinity and give you a much fuller understanding of the triune relationship that is at the heart of Christian doctrine. It will leave you with a faith that is renewed and strengthened, and show you how you can engage more deeply in your relationship with God and the world through the Trinity.
