This work is divided into three major sections-Inferno, Purgatorio, andParadiso.Dante had two guides: Virgil, who leads him throughInferno, Purgatorio and Beatrice, who introduces him toParadiso. Dante is spiritually lost, conscious that he is ruining himself, and requires guidance to find the way of righteousness to God also called the True Way. Finally rescued by Virgil in Inferno, Dante traveled with him through the nine circles of Hell, each representing a different sin. He was confronted with the horrors of Hell and the fate of the souls there. After surviving the depths of Hell, Dante and Virgil proceeded toPurgatorio, where souls, including Dante ́s, will climb Mt. Purgatory to rid themselves of sins and proceed to Heaven with the help of an angel. Purgatory has seven terraces that needed to be gone through. They correspond to the seven deadly sins. After reaching Mt's summit, Virgil departs, and Dante meets Beatrice who leads him through the successive ascending levels. Beatrice guides Dante through the nine spheres of Paradiso. In each part of his journey and their subpart, Dante met numerous dead souls who ́re suffering, trying to rid themselves of sin or simply survive in the afterlife. It is widely considered the preeminent work in Italian literature, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan language, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise or Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents, allegorically, the soul's journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Consequently, the Divine Comedy has been called "the Summa in verse".The work was originally simply titled Comed�a and the word Divina was added by Giovanni Boccaccio. One of the world's great literary masterpieces, the "Divine Comedy" is at its heart an allegorical tale regarding man's search for divinity. The work is divided into three sections, "Inferno," "Purgatorio," and "Paradiso," each containing thirty-three cantos. It is the narrative of a journey down through Hell, up the mountain of Purgatory, and through the revolving heavens into the presence of God. In this aspect it belongs to the two familiar medieval literary types of the Journey and the Vision, however Dante intended the work to be more than just simple allegory, layering the narrative with rich historical, moral, political, literal, and anagogical context. In order for the work to be more accessible to the common readers of his day, Dante wrote in the Italian language. This was an uncommon practice at the time for serious literary works, which would traditionally be written in Latin. One of the truly great compositions of all time, the "Divine Comedy" has inspired and influenced readers ever since its original creation. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, is translated into English verse by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and includes an introduction by Henry Francis Cary.
