Download or read book Loyal Dissent written by Charles E. Curran and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loyal Dissent is the candid and inspiring story of a Catholic priest and theologian who, despite being stripped of his right to teach as a Catholic theologian by the Vatican, remains committed to the Catholic Church. Over a nearly fifty-year career, Charles E. Curran has distinguished himself as the most well-known and the most controversial Catholic moral theologian in the United States. On occasion, he has disagreed with official church teachings on subjects such as contraception, homosexuality, divorce, abortion, moral norms, and the role played by the hierarchical teaching office in moral matters. Throughout, however, Curran has remained a committed Catholic, a priest working for the reform of a pilgrim church. His positions, he insists, are always in accord with the best understanding of Catholic theology and always dedicated to the good of the church. In 1986, years of clashes with church authorities finally culminated in a decision by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, headed by then-Cardinal Josef Ratzinger, that Curran was neither suitable nor eligible to be a professor of Catholic theology. As a result of that Vatican condemnation, he was fired from his teaching position at Catholic University of America and, since then, no Catholic university has been willing to hire him. Yet Curran continues to defend the possibility of legitimate dissent from those teachings of the Catholic faith—not core or central to it—that are outside the realm of infallibility. In word and deed, he has worked in support of more academic freedom in Catholic higher education and for a structural change in the church that would increase the role of the Catholic community—from local churches and parishes to all the baptized people of God. In this poignant and passionate memoir, Curran recounts his remarkable story from his early years as a compliant, pre-Vatican II Catholic through decades of teaching and writing and a transformation that has brought him today to be recognized as a leader of progressive Catholicism throughout the world.

The Chairman reminded Mr. Gnat that lie was making a speech instead of merely asking a question. Mr. Grant be""ed pardon; he knew he was trespassing, and concluded by repeating his questions Did the committee appointed last October consider and report as to whether anv alteration should be made in the terms of adding ministers' names to or taking them from th3 list, and if they had not reported when would they? Secondlv, fflio had changed the 'Year Book' to what it had never been before, and which it would not have been now if he (Mr. Grant) had not exposed a case of tyranny?" This is pretty well reported for Mr. Leader: though I may correct the last sentence attributed to me by him, and this I can do by tym Manchester papers. The Courier, Oct. 11, said, " He (Mr. Grant) stated that the alteration in the Book had been made to cover the tyranny-which he (had) exposed." The Manchester Guardian of the same date reported me as saying, "Why had the words ' omitted from' been put in this year that were never in before, and would not have been in now but for the tyranny of the committee, which he (Mr. Grant) had endeavoured to expose." Dr. Smith, the secretary, instead of confessing the gross injustice committed, and the fraud and usurpation of inventing a law to 6creen it, was hysterically affected at the dreadful taste of using the word " tyranny." Perpetrating the act is nothing--falsifying the constitution of Congregationalism by a forged law is nothing; but describing...

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. After I had finished my studies at the college, I went to seek my fortune in the dissenting world, for at that time dissenterism was all the world to me, ?I knew not of, and cared not for, any other world; the national religion and its temples were to me exactly on a par with the mythology of Greece and Rome, and the temples in which wood and stone were wont to be worshipped. I do not know anything which can come up to the conceit of an imperfectly educated and simple young man. I was full of vanity and self-sufficiency; I felt myself to be an oracle, and fancied that I should astonish and illuminate the world. Perhaps, however, conceit is common to the young of all classes, educatedor not educated. Thirty years ago, I should not have thought it necessary, as I do now, to explain to my readers the manner in which ministers gain possession of their pulpits in dissenting congregations: but I find that our internal polity is not so well known to all the world as I then imagined. There are many classes of dissenters, but to which particular body I belong I do not wish to make known, for the matters on which I shall treat are nearly common to them all. It is a matter of boasting among the dissenters, that they are not compelled to receive their ministers from the appointment of others, but that they choose for themselves. That they certainly do, and so much the worse for them and their pastors, as will perhaps frequently appear in the course of this history. There are varieties in the mode of election, for in some chapels the right of choosing the minister rests in the trustees, in others the choice rests in the whole body of the subscribers, and in others the minister is chosen by the church only. In many dissenting chapels a distinction is made betweenthe church an...

Book Noam Chomsky

  • ISBN : 9780262522557

Download or read book Noam Chomsky written by Robert F Barsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography describes the intellectual and political milieus that helped shape Noam Chomsky, a pivotal figure in contemporary linguistics, politics, cognitive psychology, and philosophy. It also presents an engaging political history of the last several decades, including such events as the Spanish Civil War, the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the march on the Pentagon to protest the Vietnam War. The book highlights Chomsky's views on the uses and misuses of the university as an institution, his assessment of useful political engagement, and his doubts about postmodernism. Because Chomsky is given ample space to articulate his views on many of the major issues relating to his work, both linguistic and political, this book reads like the autobiography that Chomsky says he will never write. Barsky's account reveals the remarkable consistency in Chomsky's interests and principles over the course of his life. The book contains well-placed excerpts from Chomsky's published writings and unpublished correspondence, including the author's own years-long correspondence with Chomsky. *Not for sale in Canada

Excerpt: ...suspected that the young Socinian preacher was desirous of obtaining an antagonist merely for the sake of acquiring some celebrity, and making a noise in a quiet town. I consulted with the old gentleman whose pulpit I supplied, and he said, " Let him alone, let him alone, --ten years hence he will either be a Christian or an infidel; he is now neither one nor the other. " Finding that he could not attract a theological notice from thedissenters, the young man tried what he could do with the church, so he attacked the establishment, preached against tithes, the Thirty-nine Articles, and the Athanasian Creed; he also wrote long letters in the county newspaper, insulting the whole body of the clergy, calling them, by implication, knaves or fools, but telling them at the same time, what a great respect he had for their hearts and understandings. It was all in vain; he could excite no attention; for all that he could say was but a repetition of the old sophisms of Tom Paine and others of that class, which were all new to this young gentleman, but stale enough to the rest of the world. I have introduced this matter in this place because it was suggested by a mention of this liberal cutler, who, notwithstanding all his declarations, did, some time after I left the town of X--, join himself to the Socinians. I used very frequently to talk to him about the matter, and to caution him concerning the danger in which he stood; but he replied that it was but fair to hear both sides, and that he was not afraid that his faith could be shaken, and that it was only following the advice of the apostle, to try all things and hold fast that which is best. But I thought that a man could not know much about Christianity if he did not know when he had...

Book excerpt: In this original, far-reaching, and timely book, Justice Stephen Breyer examines the work of the Supreme Court of the United States in an increasingly interconnected world, a world in which all sorts of activity, both public and private—from the conduct of national security policy to the conduct of international trade—obliges the Court to understand and consider circumstances beyond America’s borders. Written with unique authority and perspective, The Court and the World reveals an emergent reality few Americans observe directly but one that affects the life of every one of us. Here is an invaluable understanding for lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
