Download or read book The Dispersal of Shells Classic Reprint written by Harry Wallis Kew and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dispersal of Shells Hardly any branch Of natural history has been so neglected as that which treats Of the various modes by which the different classes Of organisms have become dispersed Over the surface Of the globe. Scattered Observations have indeed been made by many writers, but Lyell and Darwin were the first to gather together the existing evidence on the subject, or to test by actual experiment the effects Of exposure to salt water on the vitality Of seeds and land-shells. Owing to this neglect the idea has arisen that, seas Of very moderate width serve as complete barriers to the dispersal of most living things; and it has been thought necessary to postulate great and Often repeated geographical mutations, and even to bridge across the widest and deepest oceans, in order to account for the actual dis tribution Of mammals or reptiles, Of plants, insects, or terrestrial mollusca. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of American Land Shells The following pages form an enlarged and revised edition of The Land and Freshwater Shells of North America, Part I, published by the Smithsonian Institution in 1869. Subsequently-described species are added. Fuller attention is given in separate chapters to the sub jects of geographical distribution, organs of generation, jaw and lingual dentition, and classification. In the descriptive portion of the work the species are grouped geographically rather than systematically, an ar rangement which at first seems awkward to our confirmed habits, but which, on consideration, is justified by the fact that the political di visions of the continent do not agree with the limits of all the various pulmonate faunas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beautiful Shells: Their Nature, Structure, and Uses Familiarly Explained, With Directions for Collecting, Cleaning, and Arranging Them in the Cabinet and Descriptions of the Most Remarkable Species Dr. Johnson gives us no less than eight different meanings for the word Shell. First, he calls it "The hard covering of anything; the external crust." Second, "The covering of a testaceous or crustaceous animal." And here we may stop, for this is just the signification which has to do with our subject; so let us turn the sentence inside out, and see what we can make of it. We all know what a covering is - an outer coat, a case, a protection from injury, a husk, a crust, a - in short, a shell, - scyll or scell, as our Saxon forefathers called it; schale, as the Germans now term it. Book The Shell Book

    Book Details:

  • Pages : 624 pages

Download or read book The Shell Book written by Julia Ellen Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shell Book: A Popular Guide to a Knowledge of the Families of Living Mollusks, and an Aid to the Identification of Shells Native and Foreign Every person interested in shells has felt the need of a manual of the shell-bearing animals of sea and land, comparable to the comprehensive manuals provided for those who wish to study birds or insects or trees. Small hand-books serve as guides to the seashore, but they treat only detached portions of the great kingdom, Mollusca. What is needed for more serious study is a larger book in which the families of mollusks are arranged in their proper order, to give a general idea of the size and scope of the important genera, and their natural relationships. Such a popular guide should give precedence to the accepted English names of the families and of the individual species described, while attaching to each its scientific name. It is quite possible to give the general reader the information he desires in his own language, without sacrifice of scientific accuracy. A book of this kind must be the outgrowth of extensive acquaintance with living mollusks in their natural surroundings, or it will be as dead as the shells in a cabinet, and dry as the dust on the old shell catalogues. It must bring together as much as can be found out about the habits of the mollusks described, and the uses people make of them, if they have any economic value. Many shells have never yet been seen alive; others are practically unknown. It is astonishing how little is known about many species of mollusks. The standard literature of conchology has a limited circulation. The classics are rare and sumptuously illustrated volumes locked up in glass cases in the great libraries. These are out of date, of course. The newer treatises are expensive and very technical. Many facts of the highest interest and value are hidden away in official reports of scientific expeditions, not easily obtainable nor easily read by anyone untrained in the sciences. If I have failed in my attempt to make an interesting and useful shell book, it is not because conditions were unfavorable for my purpose. Everything and everybody worked together to help me. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Search of Shells, Land and Freshwater The body of every mollusk with which we are con cerned, except those of 'the slug family, is contained in a membranous sac called the mantle, which not only serves as a model on which'the shell is moulded, but is liberally provided at the edges of its open end with the glands that secrete the Shelly matter. To this set of glands alone are due the coloured bands and other markrngs in the shells, as may be seen in the case of a fractured specimen that had been repaired by the owner; in this, the new matter thrown out of the mantle under the fracture is always colourless.
